Another announcementā€¦

ON THE FARM RESPITE

What is it?
Iā€™ve decided to offer a combination of my servicesā€¦ Respite childcare, and farm experiences. Would you like a couple hours to yourself to do groceries, catch up with a friend, or just enjoy some time alone? Are you looking for an enriching, engaging experience for your children on the weekends?

Time slots are 1-3 hours (ideally 1 hour until itā€™s warmer lol). You will drop your child/children off to me on farm for a session of educational fun. Pick up and drop off services can be discussed. Help me feed the rabbits, collect eggs, groom the ponies and take the goats for a walk! This is extremely regulating and therapeutic for most kids (and adults!). You can share your time slot with a friend for a group price - max of 5 kids at once.

This is open to BOTH neurotypical and neurodivergent children. I am a PSW/DSW with 6+ years experience with working with physically and developmentally disabled children and youth

We love our little group of Cayugas!

The Cayuga is one of the hardiest domestic duck breeds. They tolerate harsh winters of the northeast and can produce many offspring. Cayuga ducks lay 100-150 eggs per year. Eggs are initially black in color, but as the season progresses, egg color lightens to white. The Cayuga averages 7-8 lbs. Birds can obtain much of their diet from foraging when given places to explore for food. Meat has excellent taste and fine quality. Adding this Watch-listed North American CPL breed to your farm or backyard in 2025 can help move them to Recovering status. Be part of the conservation solution!

Did I miss anything? Do you have suggestions for what else might be needed in the lambing and kidding kit, especially for newbies?

Just a neat post about quail beak and facial structure!

Just a neat post about quail beak and facial structure!

Today Iā€™d like to talk about beaks!

The top row of pictures are beaks to avoid. Thereā€™s a super long, pointy beak that makes the bird look like a bird of prey. Thereā€™s a super long and skinny beak. Thereā€™s a long beak with an overgrown upper beak, and a long beak with an overgrown lower beak. Then we have the odd monstrosity at the end with a super short beak.

Thereā€™s no written rules on what a beak should look like, but here are some examples to compare the top row to. Theyā€™re strong beaks that arenā€™t too long or too short. Theyā€™re nicely curved, not too straight or too curved. The beaks close properly, and the tops and bottoms are of correct length. These are beaks that are not likely to need trimming - I select away from trimming. Theyā€™re nice, solid beaks that are not likely to break easily.

Thereā€™s a nice slope from the skull to the beak, with a slight, but noticeable, stop (the stop is the part where the beak joins the skull). The middle bird of in the top row has too much of an angle to his stop.

When breeding a bird for production, beaks are important as they are responsible for feeding the bird, and feed is responsible for growth. So itā€™s important to keep in mind beak structure when selecting breeders.
