This class is geared towards parents/guardians of riding students, but is open to anyone wanting to learn how to be safe and comfortable around horses. Lessons will include safety while catching, leading, tying, grooming, tacking up and learning to read equine body language. This is blended theory and “hands-on” learning.

Crosswind Equestrian and Ridgeline Equestrian are teaming up to offer theoretical and “blended” classes in Chilliwack. (Blended classes include both theoretical and practical hands on lessons)

Jillian Cross (Crosswind Equestrian) is an Equine Canada Certified Competition Coach with 18 years of experience training horses and teaching riding lessons to both English and Western riders, with a dressage focus. Jillian has also been a college instructor with a Professional Instructor Education certificate for over 10 years.

Tegan Luckham (Ridgeline Equestrian) is a CRA level 3 certified instructor, and has been coaching for 7 years. Her focus is on creating well rounded English riders with good basics before moving into lower level dressage and jumping.
Tegan also is a certified Fire Instructor and the current Training Officer at Chilliwack River Valley Fire Department in charge of creating and implementing all training for the fire hall.

Classes offered:
Intro to horses - 4 week class - this class is directed towards parents/guardians of riding students, but is open to anyone wanting to learn how to be safe and comfortable around horses. Lessons will include safety while catching, leading, tying, grooming, tacking up and learning to read their body language. This is blended theory and “hands-on” learning. Wednesdays from 6.30 - 8.00pm

Fire safety in and around the barn. A 2 week look at common barn fire safety concerns and prevention as well as Emergency Planning and preparation for every barn.

Equestrian Canada Rider Program: Levels 1 - 6

“The Program: The English Rider Program was developed for individuals who wish to learn safe horsemanship and riding. The purpose of this program is to produce safe and knowledgeable horseman and to assist in the development of future Instructor and Coaches. The Rider level 1-8 program is a National Program with National standards that rewards all riders, recreational to competitive by advancing their learning with Certificates of Achievement and badges. This program provides riders and coaches with an attainable progression through the rider level framework.”

Rider levels may also be eligible for school credits.

Theory classes for Rider Levels will run as a group, individual or semi private riding lessons must be scheduled separately for the ridden portion of preparation for the rider level tests.

Some tips for helping the horses manage the hot weather. (And remember, less is more with leg wraps, boots, etc in hot weather to prevent tendon heat injury in the legs)

Being mindful and planning ahead can help prevent heat-related problems in horses.
