Yesterday I was a frustrated mess. I was able to refocus and look at the Monty Robert's lessons that I signed us up for. Today, Taylor did not want to have anything to do with the lead rope or her halter. She had a bunch of shallow bites on her rear left quarter and was walking stiffly.

I approached her with the principles I learned in the first couple of videos, no eye contact, soft voice, soft hands and looking only at her shoulder. When she relaxed, Rebecca approached and after a little while, I was able to put on her halter with no issues.

I led her to the round pen and introduced the 3/6/9/12 positions from the centre of the round pen. No direct eye contact, soft voice and only looking at her shoulders. She seemed to just relax into it. An almost thank you for respecting her discomfort.

I love this mare and I think we'll do just fine together.

What can you do to prevent ulcers from developing in your horse? Equine ulcers are all too common, with studies showing that up to 90% of horses will be affected by ulcers in their lifetime. Stomach ulcers, also known as Equine Gastric Ulcer Syndrome (EGUS), are most common in horses. But ulcers can

If you give horses hay you must give them access to water! They should alwayssss have access to water and food, but especially with hay and feed. Their big water trough doesn’t have water, and I didn’t bring the truck so I left buckets with water so they are good until we fill the trough in a few hours.

Make sure you don’t put food, minerals or water in an area with no escapes-like a corner. That could cause a horse to get hurt by itself.

Brought them in for shelter away from the other horses, a dry area, hay supplement to grass, minerals and a dry place to lay down.

Let your daughters grow up to be horse girls.

Let her room be messy and her clothes be torn. Let her barns be spotless and her horses shine. Let her be first up in the morning and the last in from outdoors at night. Let her forget breakfast and skip dinners and have flat sandwiches on white bread, gripped in dirty hands. Let her horse share the sandwiches.

Let the kids at school call her 'horse girl' as an insult and let her screen saver tell them she accepts the name with pride. Let her miss class for a show. Let her miss a show for the vet. Let her cry when she wins and cry when she loses. Let her make best friends and make worst enemies and fall off and get back on and fall off again. Let her be the one they put on the crazy ponies. Let her ride every day. Then let her have a second horse. And a third.

And when the going gets rough, let yourself relax. Horse girls become horsewomen and horsewomen don't give up.

Today we groomed, fed carrots and minerals and walked. Taylor is still looking sore, but Rebecca was patient and kind, using praise and encouragement to get Taylor going. We did 3 circles each way walking without a rider on, desensitization with rider on (wiggling around, checking the belly areas out) and walking with a rider on her back dor 3 circles each way with a long turn across the centre of the field.

Purple Pain The Purple horse is very independently minded and often known as the “bombproof” horse. They’re unflappable, reliable and a loyal friend. However, these horses can also be one of the most frustrating horses to own, bruising ones ego as they are not easily motivated, giving them the name of “Royal pain in the butt”. We also call them the “Boggwart” as they can seem like they are bogged in mud! They are often not worried about what the herd is doing and are happy doing their own thing, which normally involves eating or standing. To train a horse like this you need to offer many rewards and think laterally, as they can be very contrary. Key Personality Indicators Desirable Traits: Reliable, Calm, Accommodating, Consistent, Tenacious, Congruent, Confident, Loyal, Bomb Proof, Unflappable, Non-reactive, Thinking, Strategic, Relaxed. Undesirable Traits: Defiant, Doesn’t Like To Move, Contrary, Buck/Rear, Sucks Back, Over Powers, Bores Quickly, Rebellious, Tunes Out, Calculating, Rigid, Lazy, Tough Minded. Training Strategies: The Purple Horse requires a very clever, patient owner. This horse is naturally oppositional, and will nearly always be inclined to do the opposite of what you ask. You will need to be equipped, with exceptional lateral thinking skills and not be someone who gets hot under the collar quickly or you’ll go mad. They didn’t get the name “Purple Pain” for nothing. Because these horses love standing around and eating you can use this to your advantage, using food and lots of stops as a way of getting the horse to work with you, soon they will be willing to go where ever you want. The Purple Horse is not that sensitive and not that motivated so kicking and whipping and applying more force will just cause them to tune out and ignore you completely. You can never get the trust or respect of this horse with that style of training. Once you have your Purple Horse understanding their job they are exceptionally reliable, unflappable mounts. They make great kids ponies, nervous rider mounts, mounted police horses, carriage horses, hunting horses and activities that could put them under a lot of pressure. They are great for jobs that could be normally quite stressful for other horses as they are very level headed and don’t get bothered easily Perfect Owner: To own this type of horse, you will need to be patient and be able to apply lateral thinking strategies. Once trained this horse is ideal for the beginner or nervous Nellies, and make excellent mounts for kids. They are often good horses for those who lack sensitivity, time or feel or are green riders. If you have a hot seat and like action this is not the horse for you.

Yellow Belly The Yellow horse is one of the most challenging horses to own, train and read. They internalize their feelings and emotions until they all boil over and then everyone knows about it. They care a great deal about their relationship with you, even if they don’t show it. Trust, comfort and safety are what motivate this horse. They are very sensitive but can also be bossy and aloof. If your timing is out then they can go from being super quiet to explosive in milliseconds, causing you to feel very insecure. Once you have the trust and a solid relationship with this horse they are truly amazing, very reliable, calm and super responsive. Key Personality Indicators Desirable Traits: Agreeable, Soft, Easy, Disciplined, Submissive, Bonding, Quiet, Responsive, Reliable, Kind, Tries Hard, Solid, Gentle. Undesirable Traits: Insecure, Fearful, Unstable, Hard to Catch, Disconnected, Aloof, Evasive, Shutdown, Doesn’t like to Move, Reserved, Defensive, Explosive, Robotic, Solitary, Unreliable, Hide at the back of the Herd. Training Strategies: The Yellow Horse can be difficult to read as they don’t externalize their emotions. They need someone who is ultra patient, puts the relationship first and understands that this horse needs time to make decisions and should not be forced into things. Ask and wait. The Yellow Horse is very sensitive and cares a great deal about how much you care. They are driven by comfort and security and need to trust their riders and handlers. To train these horses you reward them with comfort. Eg. Get the change and let them stand around, they need time to process and reflect on information. They can become very evasive, aloof and bossy with the underlying manipulation of an explosion if you push too hard. So take your time, be patient, but be firm and have a strong image of the outcome you want to achieve. They make excellent horses for Western Pleasure, Camp Drafting, Cattle Mustering and Trail Riding. Perfect Owner: This horse requires someone who always puts the relationship first and takes their time, is very patient and is not in a hurry to achieve outcomes. Once you have the relationship established with this horse they will be very reliable. Because these horses don’t share their feelings and are not that people oriented they require an understanding person that appreciates how they operate as it can feel like there is not a lot of love coming back at you.

Yesterday, the kids got back from camp and asked to go see Taylor right away. We had a great time! Everyone got on her and she was listening! At first she did not want to move, so I got in the arena and started walking, looking back over my shoulder and asking for a join up. She did! We went a circle each way in the round pen with me walking in the lead, this way both sides of her brain were exposed to the circle with a rider on her back. After that, it was easy peasy! What a lovely mare.

This past week Taylor and I worked on maintaining space during our walk/trot adventures. She did great! We did work in the round pen and desensitization work on legs and hooves. I got on Taylor twice, all by myself, this week. The first time we went for two steps and got off. The second time we went for 10 steps and I got off. Taylor did not budge that much the second time, I sat on her and worked on feeling comfortable and trying to figure it out. Go us!!!

Intro to training: Lesson 4: Horse Training: Horse training Lesson: riding lesson

Show: This time I worked with Taylor again on the same lesson we had previously, and she did so well that I was able to introduce Rebecca to a training lesson. Rebecca’s training session went well too. With help from me she was able to attain space, direction of feet, and needs to work on how to motivate her horse. Which we will all learn once the personality test is complete. But in the meantime, my notes conclude with amazinggg job, but we need to work on predicting the horse’s behaviour for example stopping at the same spot, or cutting through at the same spot, and pushing her past or out by generating assertive momentum before its too late. Time and experience will solve this. Because we need to work on our body language, whip, and momentum skills it’s best not to train your horse without my assistance. This will help keep clear and concise communication, so we don’t confuse Taylor and cause her to lose confidence in the situation.
Furthermore! We did ride on Taylor ba****ck; we did a side mount so that we learned how to test how Taylor is feeling about getting on her back, and it’s easy and safe to push off in case she gets spooked. But it also takes the pressure away for a moment for Taylor to register your getting on her back. This gives her time to register and for you to gain confidence in going up. Then we sat balanced and rode comfortably.

Tell: Horse training success is all in the work from the ground. A good, long-term relationship between you and your horse is built from the ground up, literally. Ground manners are about teaching your horse how to behave around humans and that you are her protector and friend. The two go hand in hand by building leadership and respect and establishing control on the ground is well worth the effort involved.
Do: Training and Riding Lesson
Training
• Communication, respect, and leadership
• Proper body language
• Space, direction, speed

Riding Lesson
• Single rein stop and turn
• How to stop properly, sit deep, say whoah, then gently pull back on the reins until Taylor stops

Homework: Rebecca can ride ba****ck while being led by Vanina, and if Vanina felt comfortable to let Rebecca bare back ride Taylor using the halter and reins (2 reins) and in a round pen; and
• Work with Friday on space, direction, and speed.

Intro to training: Lesson 3: (horse training)

Objective: Working on leadership and control, while learning about their horse’s behaviour) This is where I worked with Taylor to gauge her behaviour and experience level by applying pressure and release techniques that I used. I do this by establishing personal space, leading, and controlling the direction of her feet. I then will note the outcome and level of reaction to the amount of pressure being applied. This helps me understand how the horse learns and answers by observing and understanding the real intention of the horse’s behaviours and reaction to pressure and release.

It was noted that she freezes up during pressure. The answer is to work on the conversation that is being had. And encourage the horse to react in a way that makes the horse feel safe. This will build trust. This shows the horse this isn’t a one-sided conversation. By giving your horse freedom of expression, allows your horse to move their feet when they are scared, confused, and learning makes them feel safe (because moving their feet is what keeps them alive). Now the conversation opens wide. We are now understanding the psychology of the horse and Maslow’s hierarchy of needs.

Show: demonstrated pressure and release techniques, we were able to perform very well for a first time, we were able to have a conversation of space, speed, and direction.
Tell: Explain that we must work on how to unfreeze your mare when she feels pressure. A horse that freezes when they feel pressure is extremely unpredictable, a horse that moves when it feels pressure, is easier to predict.

Tell: An Untrained or poorly trained horse with bad habits such as biting, kicking, rearing, and charging (among others) is dangerous. A horse can kill a person with these behaviours. Teaching a horse good ground manners is teaching a horse that these are unacceptable and unnecessary reactions.

Do: led horse around the round pen with given exercises of back up through poles and at poles.
My homework: continue to demonstrate, and explain while asserting leadership (training to accept pressure and release)
Your homework: to use the resources given to understand your horse’s personality. Read the information and then take the wheel and figure out what personality type your horse is so that we can be the correct trainer for her. Then read how to be the correct trainer for her.

Intro to Beginner: Lesson 2: mini sessions
• Understand Maslow’s Hierarchy of needs
• Pick up feet for cleaning including what thrush is, how to treat and frequency of treatment (apple cider vinegar)
• Calmly accept being haltered and led
• Create a partnership not a dictatorship
• Communication, Respect and Leadership
• Have calm confidence in the outside world because you will protect her
• Awareness of own body language
• Horses are prey animals
• Never use a training tool as a form of punishment

Intro to Beginner: Lesson 1:

Theory: horse behavior, horse psychology, leading and controlling

The objective of this lesson is to:
• Look to you as a leader
• Not crowd your personal space (no kicking, biting, charging, leaning, treading on your feet etc)
• Respond appropriately to what you are asking Taylor to do
• Practice

Demonstration: working on personal space, and safety when walking a horse.

Tell: taking time to lay firm foundations means that you will be training a horse that is willing to please and that is EASIER to train in the long run.

Do: Take horses for a walk from the quarantine pen to the arena safely, while practicing and stopping the horse, then backing them up keeping the horse out of their personal space whenever the horse starts to lead; and
Take own horse form home base to the round pen

Homework: Adventure with your horse working on leading and controlling, while understanding Taylors horse’s behavior and psychology.

The Beginner, Intermediate, or Advanced Rider: "any person who is riding a horse is training a horse"

Beginner Experience Levels:

Pre-Beginner: The pre-beginner rider is someone who is interested and curious, but totally in experienced with horses and needs to learn about them from the ground-up. They are learning how to lead horses, groom them, and related to their size and movement from the ground. The rider has no knowledge about horse training and care is interested in gaining confidence and experience. The rider may be timid or fearless.

Beginner: The beginner rider is entering the awareness-development stage; They might have spent a total of 10 hours in the saddle, either by riding once in a while over a period of years or by taking an introductory group of lessons. She can Control a quiet school horse at a walk and trot with turns and can stop the horse. The beginner rider slows down and walks if she feels she is loosing her balance at the trot. She will remain a beginner until she has developed the balance and confidence to lope or canter the horse.
