🐾🔍Technical Tuesdays: Understanding Functional Rewards 🔍🐾

Did you know that dogs have natural instincts related to hunting and foraging that can be satisfied through specific types of rewards? These instincts are directly tied to the predation sequence—the natural process dogs use when hunting in the wild.

The sequence includes chase, catch bite, kill bite, dissect, and consume. Using functional rewards that align with this sequence can make training more effective by tapping into these innate behaviors!

Chase (Pursue and Capture)
Dogs love to chase! Using fast-moving toys, flirt poles, or fetch games can activate your dog’s chase drive, turning it into a fun and engaging training experience.

Catch Bite (Grab and Hold)
This instinct is fulfilled when a dog grabs or holds an object. You can use toys, balls, or tug ropes as rewards that allow your dog to engage in this action. These activities can be great for play-based training!

Kill Bite (Shake and Subdue)
Dogs that are highly motivated by prey drive might enjoy rewards that let them shake or subdue something, like tug toys or sturdy ropes. This satisfies the “kill” instinct in a safe, controlled way.

Dissect (Chew and Rip Apart)
Chewing and tearing are natural behaviors for many dogs. Providing rewards like stuffed Kongs, raw bones, or puzzle feeders can allow dogs to indulge in this “dissecting” instinct, keeping them mentally engaged while fulfilling their natural needs.

Consume (Eat and Savor)
This one’s easy! Many dogs are highly motivated by food, so offering a tasty treat that satisfies their "consume" instinct can be a powerful training tool. The key is to use high-value treats that your dog finds irresistibly rewarding.

By offering rewards that fulfill these instincts, you're aligning training with your dog’s natural predatory sequence, keeping them mentally stimulated and providing a more engaging experience.

Let’s talk about walks!

Does your dog heel? Teaching loose leash is simple if you’re not trying to get anywhere fast. Start in an environment your dog is very comfortable in, the living room, hall or yard is just fine. When they pull stop moving or walk in the other direction. Never push forward if they’re pulling.

Happy walking!

We’re loving -11°C today! Grateful for a beautiful day!
