I hate to break this to you, but even though your dog(s) may grow out of the puppy stage it doesn't mean they are going to train themselves 📣
Your dog isn't going to just get over these triggers. They aren't going to wake up one morning and just decide to stop going crazy when the mailman comes to your door or stop pouncing on people when you decide to go for an evening walk. 🚶♀️🦮
Why does this matter? 🤷♀️ Because it's important that you feel confident to integrate your dog into your lifestyle. You know what's so fun? 🕺Being able to take your dog with you everywhere you go without any stress, anxiety or worry. I am SO grateful I took the time and energy to train my own dogs Charlie and Journee... Because of that decision, Laura and I do everything with our dogs. Some say we're lucky, but I can assure you, well behaved dogs are not a matter of luck. 🍀

Dogs aren’t verbal creatures like we are, and our language can be incredibly nuanced. For us, one word can have multiple meanings, but for dogs, it’s a bit more complicated.
When we say “NO,” it might mean stop jumping, stop barking, drop that, leave it alone, don’t pick that up, or stop pulling on the lead – the list is endless. While we can understand that “NO” can mean any of these things, dogs don’t have the ability to grasp that a word’s meaning can change depending on context.
A firm “NO” might get your dog to stop what they’re doing, but it’s not because they understand the word itself. They’ve likely picked up on your tone or body language indicating you’re upset, which might scare or make them anxious, causing them to stop the behavior temporarily. But this doesn’t address the root of the problem or teach them what they should be doing instead.
Very often, just saying “NO” doesn’t stop the behavior in the short or long term. Without teaching them an alternative action, dogs can become frustrated, which can lead to other unwanted behaviors.
Rather than focusing on what not to do, it's more effective to teach alternate behaviors and redirect their actions to something positive.
