Meet Mickey, our current special case.

Mickey has had a bit of a rough start after being a primarily outdoor cat. If you count his big 'fangs' you will notice that there are only three! His upper left canine tooth is broken off and the tooth root needs to be surgically extracted. A neuter surgery is also pending and an umbilical hernia is also going to be repaired.

He has already been treated for internal and external parasites (including those pesky ear mites) and has had some blood tests done prior to his surgery but he still has a way to go before he is ready for his forever home. Mickey is also working on consistently using the litter box—something that wasn’t a priority during his outdoor life.

Until Mickey's big surgery day, he is eating only canned/soft food and is getting medication to make sure he is comfortable (because broken teeth hurt!). He has still managed to put on some needed weight and has gained over 1 kg since arriving. He is also discovering that being brushed is an enjoyable experience.

Mickey’s medical care is more extensive than our average resident and is estimated to cost between $800 and $1,000. Your support can make a big difference in his journey. If you would like to make a donation towards Mickey’s medical expenses or the cost of his wet food, we would be grateful. Thank you for helping to give him the happy, healthy life he deserves.

🖤 Today, we’re wrapping up our black cat feature with the last two of our sleek beauties - Blueberry & Shadow 🖤

🐾Some exciting news: Shadow was adopted yesterday! Stay tuned for her story on Move-Out Monday.

🐾Now, let’s talk about Blueberry, our TRUE mini-panther with a BIG personality. This energetic guy has earned a few nicknames around here, like “tornado” and “disaster,” and we suspect he might have a touch of feline ADHD! Blueberry loves to wrestle with his best buddy Reba, knock over his water bowl (as often as possible), and generally keep life interesting. But for all his mischief, Blueberry is equally affectionate. He adores being held, soaking up every bit of love you can offer, and has a loud, rumbling purr that will melt your heart. If you’re looking for a lively, loving companion who will keep you on your toes and shower you with affection, Blueberry might be your perfect match! Come meet him tomorrow, we're open 11AM-4PM.

Feel-Good Friday Spotlight: Colette from CMP Design!

It’s Friday, and we’re feeling extra grateful as we wrap up this week of community appreciation! Today, we’re sending a huge shoutout to Colette from CMP design co. whose creativity and generosity have made such a difference for our shelter.

Colette first supported us by designing the beautiful decal for Hadyn’s door, working with his family to get the design just right. Most recently, she baked an incredible batch of her famous gluten-free, preservative-free dog cookies for us to sell at the Christmas market. Not only were these treats a huge hit, but she also packaged them with care, complete with ingredient tags, and donated them entirely to help us raise funds for supplies.

Thank you, Colette, for your thoughtfulness, generosity, and continued support. We appreciate you more than words can say!

🖤Black Cat Spotlight: Merry & Bright 🖤

Our six cats of the week may have the same stunning black fur, but each one brings a totally different vibe! Today we’re featuring two more adorable siblings who are as sweet as they come—Merry & Bright! These 14-week-old cuties are spayed and neutered and are ready to find their forever families! Here’s a little bit about each of them:

🐾 BRIGHT: Male, neutered, 14 weeks old
Bright is the braver of the two! This tiny little guy is a total love bug who happily soaks up all the attention you can give him. He’s playful, curious, and loves to interact with people. Bright is the perfect addition to a home with other cats, kids, and possibly dogs.

🐾 MERRY: Female, spayed, 14 weeks old
Merry is a little shy at first, but she's warming up every day! While she may take a little longer to feel comfortable, once she does, she’s full of affection and playfulness. Check out additional photos in the comments, where she’s cuddling up with one of our volunteers. Merry would also do well in a home with other pets and kids.

These two have so much love to give, and they’re ready to brighten up your life. Want to meet them? Come visit us during our adoption hours!

🖤 Black Cat Spotlight: Thelmo & Fangy 🖤

Our six cats of the week may share the same black fur, but their personalities couldn’t be more different. Today, we’re highlighting Thelmo and Fangy, a brother-and-sister duo surrendered to us in July as tiny kittens. Now almost 7 months old, they’ve grown up here at the shelter and are ready to graduate from the kitten room to the adult rooms—a transition we wish we didn’t have to see. This move means they’ve been at the shelter far too long 💔. Both have so much to offer—here’s what makes each of them so special:

🐾 THELMO: Male, neutered, 7 months old
Thelmo is a long-haired, regal gentleman who oozes sophistication. He loves being held—often draping himself around your neck like the most glamorous scarf—and is a total people-cat. Thelmo is great with kids, other cats, and loves playtime. He’s affectionate, playful, and the full package!

🐾FANGY: Female, spayed, 7 months old
With her bat-like ears and mischievous personality, Fangy is pure magic. Seriously, sometimes we check the cameras to make sure she’s not casting spells at night—she’s got a Harry Potter vibe! (Fittingly, we sorted her into Slytherin for Halloween.) Fangy is sweet, a little on the shy side, but she loves to play, especially in our toy castle where she’ll pounce on you from her hidden spot. She's affectionate, good with kids and other cats, and very wise for her young age.

🖤Black cats like Fangy and Thelmo are often overlooked, but we promise they’re anything but ordinary. Want to meet these mini panthers? Come by to visit them Wednesday/Thursday/Friday from 4pm-7pm and Saturday 11am-4pm.

Thankful Tuesday Spotlight!

Every day, we are reminded how lucky we are to have a community that cares. On this Thankful Tuesday, we’re celebrating the amazing people and businesses who go above and beyond to support our shelter and the cats who call it home.

💃 Alison from A.M.R Dance held a month-long fundraiser for us, collecting donations of much-needed supplies. Alison also made sure everyone flipped through a binder of our adoptable cats, helping us spread the word about the kitties who are waiting for their forever homes. Thank you, Alison and everyone at AMR Dance, for your generosity!

🎄 A special shoutout to Eliza, one of our board member’s daughters (Nicole Hall), who crafted handmade ornaments for our Christmas tree with the names of our adoptable cats on them. How cute is that?! If you adopt a kitty, you’ll get to take home their ornament as a keepsake!

📣 We can’t say enough about Jim Justinick—a true champion of our shelter. Jim shares every one of our posts online (seriously, every single one), which amplifies our voice and gets our message heard. He also regularly brings in donations of cat food and litter. Supporters like Jim are the reason we can keep doing what we do! 🙌

🧹❤️ 🧼 A huge thank you to BOSS Carpet Cleaning Solutions for their generosity! Garett came by to clean our ducts today—something that was long overdue—and didn’t charge us a thing! As proud cat lovers themselves (they have 5 cats at home!), they understand the importance of keeping our kitties happy and healthy in a clean environment. Their support means the world to us.

It takes a village to keep a shelter running, and we are so lucky to have you all in ours. Thank you for helping us care for the cats who need us most! 🙏❤️

🎉 Adoption Update: Noel 🐾

Noel was surrendered as a kitten and grew up at the shelter while waiting for his forever home. As time went on, he started to lose hope, becoming more withdrawn and depressed. It broke our hearts to see such a sweet soul feeling so defeated.

But then, the day before his first birthday, his rescuers arrived: Paulo and his family. 💕 When they read Noel’s story, something clicked. As Paulo shared, “It really tugged at my heartstrings. A cat deserves to be in a forever home, and every time we looked, we always circled back to Noel. There was something from the get-go.”

Now, Noel is thriving in his new home with his feline brother, Pepper. 🐈🐈‍⬛ Paulo shared, “They run around, play, jump on top of the fridge, hide in our cabinets, and just be brothers. They even sleep next to each other. We’ve even noticed a difference in Noel’s face—it’s more relaxed. It makes my family and me so happy to see him this happy.”

Stories like Noel’s remind us why we do what we do. Thank you, Paulo and family, for giving Noel the life he always deserved! ❤️

Did you know playtime is essential for your cat’s mental and physical well-being?

Here’s one of our alumni, Samson, enjoying a DIY treat puzzle—proof that even simple activities can spark joy and engagement!

Here are some tips to make playtime purr-fect:

🎯 Use Food for Fun
Scatter kibble to encourage chasing.
Hide treats to inspire hunting.
Try food puzzles to let your cat “work” for their food.

🎾 Variety is Key
Offer an assortment of toys: think crinkly paper, soft toys, balls, or feathered wands.
Rotate toys regularly to keep your cat interested.

🏃 Short and Frequent Play Sessions
Cats love short bursts of activity—play multiple times a day to mimic their natural hunting instincts.

💕 One-on-One Time
Cats typically prefer individual play, so if you have more than one cat, give each one individualized attention.

⚠️ Pro Tips
Avoid using hands or feet as toys to prevent unwanted biting or scratching.
Kittens need more vigorous play than older cats, but even senior cats benefit from gentle activity.

Playing isn’t just fun—it helps your cat stay active, reduce stress, and strengthen your connection. Make it part of your daily routine!

The newest adoptable cat at the shelter, Bright is what we lovingly call an ABC—“Another Black Cat.” His addition to our crew means we now have SIX gorgeous black cats waiting for their forever homes.

Did you know black cats (and dogs) are often the last to be adopted? These sleek, “mini panthers” make wonderful companions who don’t deserve to be overlooked.

🐾 Join Our Volunteer Team! 🐾

We’re always happy to welcome new volunteers to our growing team. Whether you’re looking to work hands-on with the cats or support in other ways, we have a variety of roles to suit your skills and schedule!

✨ Cat Cuddlers: We can NEVER have too many! Our cats love meeting new people, and nothing brightens their day more than cuddles, scratches, and playtime. Not only is it fun, but it’s essential for keeping our cats happy, enriched, and ready to find their forever homes. Various shift times available including drop in! Send us a message to learn more.

✨ Animal Care Attendants: Help keep our cats happy and healthy by feeding them, refreshing their blankets, tidying up their spaces, and (yes) scooping the litter. Think of it as helping our furry friends with their housekeeping! Various shifts available – send us a message to learn more.

✨ Other Roles: From washing and folding laundry to handyman tasks and light cleaning, every little bit helps. If you have a special skill, let us know—we’d love to put it to use!

✨ Board Treasurer Opportunity: We have lots of exciting new things planned for 2025 so we’re looking for extra help with our board treasurer position. This role requires about 10 hours a month (on your own schedule), strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and a clear criminal record check (cost covered by us). It’s a rewarding way to contribute to our mission while supporting our expansion in 2025!

⁉Interested? ⁉ Send us a message on social media, email us at [email protected], or call or text 780-932-1082.

Together, we can change lives – on paw at a time!

🎄✨ Our tree is up, and the packages are piling up for the kitties! 🎁🐾

We’re constantly amazed by the generosity of our incredible volunteers and supporters. Today, Liam and Taylor stopped by with an amazing haul of goodies for the cats, and we couldn’t be more grateful! 💕

As we get closer to Christmas, if you’re feeling the giving spirit, we are always in need of cat food—wet or dry, any brand. Every little bit helps us care for the cats who call our shelter home. 🐱

Thank you for spreading the holiday cheer and helping us make this season bright for the kitties! 🌟

🐾 Exciting News from Drumheller Humane Society! 🐾

We’re thrilled to announce the growth of our amazing team! Please join us in welcoming two new members who bring passion, expertise, and enthusiasm to our cause.

✨ Keshia Schow is joining our board, and we couldn’t be happier! Keshia comes with a wealth of knowledge in pet nutrition, event planning, and fundraising. Her skills will be invaluable as we continue to support our furry friends and the community. We’re excited to have her on board!

✨ Meaghan West is our newest staff member, and we're so lucky to have her! Here’s a little about her:

Meaghan joined her spouse in Drumheller in October, 2022. She is a second-generation vet tech after graduating from the Saskatchewan Polytechnic Veterinary Technology program in 2015. Prior to moving to Drum, she worked at canine/feline practices in Saskatoon and Edmonton, for eleven years in shelter medicine at the Saskatoon SPCA, and teaching in the vet tech programs at Saskatchewan Polytechnic and NAIT. From a horse racing family, she has always worked with animals including positions at veterinary practices in Kansas, Ontario, Saskatchewan, and Alberta.

Meaghan enjoys competing in dog sports with her Pomeranian Tusk Snowbeast (Tusk). They have titles in Barn Hunt, North American Sport Dog Association (NASDA), CKC Sprinters, CKC Scent Detection, and Do More With Your Dog. Of their two cats, Charlemagne (Bean) has previously competed in the household pet class in ACFA shows but is now retired. Gilgamesh (Gilly) is a Scottish Fold that decided to remain a house pet. In her spare time, Meaghan enjoys cross country skiing, running, reading, and a variety of fiber-based crafts including knitting, sewing, and shuttle tatting.

We are so excited to have Keshia and Meaghan on our team, and we can’t wait to see all the amazing things we will accomplish together for our community! 🐶🐱

Today is International Animal Rights Day. This day serves as a reminder that animals are sentient beings with souls and emotions who deserve our respect and protection. Unfortunately, all around the world, animals continue to face exploitation for human gain.

At the Drumheller and District Humane Society, we are dedicated to advocating for animal rights and their protection. 💙

On this important day, we encourage you to show your support for animals by donating to World Animal Protection Canada (), a charity committed to strengthening animal welfare regulations worldwide. Founded in the UK, this organization works with governments, businesses, and international organizations to change laws and policies that affect animal welfare.

Let's come together and make a difference for animals everywhere!

🚨 Move Out Monday! 🚨

Cruella’s journey with us was anything but easy. She’s extremely cat-aggressive—just sensing another cat nearby would leave her so worked up, it took days for her to calm down. The only thing we could do was to kennel her in our back bay, far from the other cats.

Luckily a team member saw beyond her challenges and connected with her. She brought Cruella home to foster, giving her the space and peace she needed to truly shine. And shine she did! Cruella blossomed in foster care, even getting along with their large dog.

That foster situation turned into a forever one, and we’re thrilled to announce that Cruella is now officially adopted! 🎉 Huge thanks to Bianka for giving this fiery girl the love and life she deserves.

Happy tails, Cruella—you’ve found your happily ever after! 💜
