Day 1 is always the hardest...
Over a month ago, a friend reached out and told me a story about a little dog in need.
Say hello to my latest foster dog. She is a pug/chihuahua/terrier mix, just barely over a year old.
This is a private surrender, and I have agreed to cover all of her costs 'pro bono' until she is vetted, spayed, and ready to find her forever home.
Though she was very loved, she arrived with nothing but a leash and collar, and a small amount of food in a Dorito's bag. So, I think that's what I'll rename her...
Welcome to Foster's, Dorito. You're gonna be ok.

Puppy update! They're all doing great and those not spoken for by friends/family will be available for adoption in 2 weeks.
Please note, I am still incredibly busy as the "holiday season" has not slowed down for me yet, thus my few posts on social media. I will not be answering questions about the puppies or the mama if we are not already personally acquainted. If you're interested in adopting, please fill out an application at the Oromocto and Area SPCA, if you are approved, they'll let you know.
Thanks!

Today we mourn the passing of an absolute icon.
Karen Pryor is the reason why I've worn a treat bag with a clicker hanging from it practically every day of my life for the last 20 years.
She is the reason many dog trainers put down the choke chains and saw the dog at the ends of their leashes as sentient learners, not robots to control or slaves only here to serve us.
Not only has her book "Don't Shoot The Dog" been famous in the dog world, but it is a staple in many parenting groups, teachers resources, even handed to corporate managers. For anyone working with the behaviours of others, this book should be on your shelf.
She is one of the main if not THE prominent educators and influencers of the "force free" movement, and anytime I am introduced to a trainer who has "KPA" after their name, I know they are exceptionally qualified.
She changed my life, countless others and by now in turn, millions of dogs and other animals.
RIP Karen Pryor. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

Another year over, and a new one just begun...
What an amazing 16th year at Foster's Home for Dogs. Thank you all so much for sharing your dogs with me and trusting me with their care while you can't be with them. I am who I am, because of and for them. ❤️
Cheers to year 17 and 2025!
Happy New Year everyone!

A very good question, and rest assured kids, the reindeer are very well looked after tonight.

T'was the night before Dogsmas,
And all thru the yard,
Every dog's tail was wagging,
And they were wagging them hard!
Happy Howlidays Everyone!!

First intro to toys!
In a few days I'll introduce a variety of surfaces and mini-obstacles.
It's a lot of work, but a lot of fun!
They are officially 4 weeks old today! 🤩

NomNomNom!
First meal, and I made too much, but Mama finished it off afterwards. 🤷♀️ waste not want not! 😆
The soupy mash is soaked puppy kibble mixed with puppy milk replacer. We'll see how their bellies do with that little taste, and if all goes well, they can eat more next time.
I also have special puppy feeding bowls being delivered tomorrow, but the cookie sheet did just fine in a pinch!

A longer video this time! But here you can see it all.
They're walking, being sassy with one another, demanding for their mother, curious to explore and any day now will manage to crawl out of their whelping pool and graduate to an X-pen.
The babies are getting very large compared to Mama, and Mama takes a break from them every chance she gets, sometimes even hiding from them under the blanket on the chair. Can't say I blame her!
This weekend we will introduce the puppies to food in the form of a soupy slop, oooh boy now the "fun" begins!! 😳😳😆😆

With Rocky Kanaka – I just got recognized as one of their top fans! 🎉
If you are interested in shelter work, I really enjoy the knowledge and compassion this guy shares. Especially loving the ongoing story of Pumpkin, the feral dog he is helping. Many insightful videos of dog body language, and he reads them so well and with kindness. 💓

Puppy Spam!
The babies are now 18 days old! They're starting to wobble walk. 🤩
Pretty soon Mama is going to have to feed them in shifts, I don't think there will be room for all 6 at once! These are chonky babies for such a little gal!
This lil boy has stolen my girl's heart just like she stole mine. 🤩
I know you've all been itchin' for it! Here's some puppy spam!!
THEIR EYES ARE OPENING!! 🤩🤩🤩
The Airedales get the first crack at the snow!
A little bit of tree damage unfortunately, but no safety concerns. 🤷♀️
Have a safe Snow Day, folx!
🤩 Good Morning Puppy & Mama Spam 😍
A bit of a longer video as it includes the puppies weigh-in, and Mama having her breakfast topped off with more whole fresh foods and supplements before settling back in to nurse.
I'm so grateful that so far, everything is going according to nature's plan, everyone is healthy and happy. 🤟
In 2008, Foster’s Home for Dogs was created to offer an alternative for families who knew their dogs would do very poorly in a traditional kennel setting surrounded by dozens of other dogs. Over the years there has been a growing popularity with ‘doggy daycare’ centres and pictures of large groups of dogs running and playing and having a great time together are all over the internet. Some of those places are great, but, some dogs just don’t feel comfortable in that situation at all.
At Foster’s, we understand that not every dog needs or wants other dog friends. We are here for those dogs, and our facility is designed so dogs don’t even have to see another dog while here if they don’t want to.
Some dogs find may find change in their schedule very overwhelming. Some dogs have separation anxiety. Some dogs are elderly or have medical conditions and their stress levels need to be managed carefully. We are here for those dogs.
We only offer 6 spots for single or multiple dogs with a maximum of 10 dogs on site at any time. This low stress, low risk environment ensures they get the attention they deserve, and helps to keep their days calm, quieter, and with little disruption or traffic coming and going each day.
At Foster’s we understand that not every dog is cuddly, and not every dog needs or wants anyone invading their personal space. We are here for those dogs, too. With over a decade immersed in canine behaviour and reading body language, we can have a ‘conversation’ and build friendship and trust with your dog, completely hands-free if needed, no leashes or collars or gimmicks. If your dog has “bite history” and you’re worried about how they will react without you around, come see why we’re different.
All new dogs and their humans must come meet us first, so you can see for yourself and feel confident that your dog is in a safe, kind, and knowledgeable environment. Chris has over 15 years experience working with dogs, including rescue and rehabilitation.
Foster’s is committed to providing a force and fear free experience and as an associate member of ICAN, we adhere to their strict code of practice and ethics. http://companionanimal.network/uncategorized/code-of-practice/
While our primary focus is providing a much needed safe space and experienced one-on-one care for the dogs who need it, that doesn’t mean we don’t take happy-go-lucky dogs too! Their experience will be much more mellow here than the popular ‘doggy daycare’ setting though, as playgroup size is limited to a maximum of 4 carefully selected and appropriately matched dogs (if available) at a time.
At Foster’s we know that some dogs only like certain dogs, or maybe they are not spayed or neutered, have health, size, or mobility considerations, and shouldn’t be around certain dogs at certain times, etc. Since we are a small facility, that means the perfect match for your friendly or selectively friendly dog might not be here at the same time they are. I do have social dogs of my own who play with the guests often, but playtime with other dogs is subject to compatibility, and therefore not guaranteed. Safety is the #1 goal here, above all, at all times.
Foster's Home for Dogs is located just 20 minutes North of Fredericton in Durham Bridge on a quiet 5+ acre property backing on to over 100 acres of private forest and trails.

*Dogs must be at least 5 months of age and must provide proof of current vaccinations for Rabies and DA2PP.
