Having some greens from the garden and learning how to be big birds. Told them today they better be all hens so they can live long happy life here.

Well, we ended up with chicks in a middle of October 🤦‍♀️ Our miss Cinders decided to be a mama, then Peppermint decided to join her. After trying to hatch our own we ended up getting some eggs from someone else. So here we are, four little babies! Moms are co-parenting, babies love having two moms 🥰

Decided to harvest our sweet potatoes, first year growing them in a ground. What I didn’t realize is that it has insane roots and you have to dig a square kilometre around the plant to get all the potatoes. These were slips from a single sweet potato that I started in February. I will definitely do it again and give them some extra fertilizer to get bigger size.
Also harvested some beets and broccoli for supper.
One last sunflower that is holding on and continues to bloom.

It is so much fun and excitement watching a hen on eggs. Our rescue girl decided she wants to be a mama. She was making the noises on Saturday and by Sunday she sat her bum down in a nesting box. We provided her with 6 eggs. By Tuesday we had 8 eggs 🤦‍♀️ Unfortunately we didn’t label the eggs so she is now on 8 eggs haha the eggs of cause were promptly marked since we seen other girls lay eggs in there when she gets up to stretch her legs and get some food. We hope to check eggs this weekend and see if we will have babies or we need to get some fertile eggs for her.

Work schedule this week was all over the place so was hard to do a lot on a weekend but some essentials. Did my very first canning - these are peppers in tomato sauce. Unfortunately my papers didn’t produce this year but Superstore had half bushel of peppers for $18. We have no shortage of tomatoes this year, at this point i processed at least 100 lb, but it might be even more. My grandmother use to make something like this and she called it Lecho (apparently it is a real thing too). Water bathing was a task and half since I don’t have actual supplies but I improvised and it worked.
Our broccoli aren’t huge but at least they are producing. Enough for a meal.
Today I also did some mushroom picking while on our hike - Chicken of the Woods! Can’t wait to have them with supper! The patch was huge, wish I had time to dehydrate some but maybe next time. Now I know where the spot is.
And lastly, squash and flowers. I enjoy how everything just becomes one single unit of leafs and flower by this time in a year. We still have a lot of bee to enjoy our garden. t

So glad it is a long weekend! No way we could process and put away everything and do garden/chicken chores in just two days. 3L of pizza sauce, 5L of salsa (not pictured) and corn all went to the freezer.
As you can see we still feeding our friends with our flowers, nothing better then buzzing in a garden!
And now I would like to talk about this variety of tomatoes - Golden Queen. I like yellow tomatoes so I wanted to grow them, but I had so many issues with them 😢- most of all was blossom end rot. So bad that I would barely get anything at all, and then the plants would get those dreded black spots. These were the last of my seeds, I decided to give up on them after this year. But here is something I did different this year, when I was planting them I put a handful of oyster shells in each hole. They were watered the same amount as all the other plants. NOT A SINGLE ISSUE! Did I crack the code of these tomatoes? Look at the size!!!

Many plum tomatoes ended up in this sauce plus other tomatoes, garlic, onion and basil. It is still simmering right now.
