Meet Emma, she is a TA (Technical Assistant) and Receptionist! 🌞

Emma started working with animals in 2021. She started her experience with animals volunteering at a cat shelter for a year, then started working at a cat boarding facility for almost two years. Emma has recently joined with EPH in June of 2024. Although she is newer to the veterinary medicine field, she has always been interested in veterinary medicine and caring for animals.

Emma loves both cats and dogs, she has three cats of her own Luffy, Sabo, and Toga. She enjoys assisting our technicians with things like blood draws, urinalysis and radiographs, but is always happy to greet the clients and patients that come in.

In her free time, she enjoys exploring her neighborhood with her harness trained kitties. When she isn’t caring for her fur babies, you can find her playing video games, catching up on her shows, and reading.

Meet Gizzard!

Gizzard came to see us for a leg amputation as his leg was too broken for repair. Did you know cats can adjust to a three-legged lifestyle remarkably well and many disabled cats live a full and happy life? Once adjusted, most cats with three legs are able to jump, run and climb and play – although perhaps a little slower than in their four-legged days!

Gizzard recently came back in for his suture removal and his owner has reported that he has adjusted amazingly well and is doing great after his procedure!

Meet Jasper!

Jasper came to see us because he wasn’t acting like himself and was vomiting. Jasper’s owner also noticed he was missing a compression sock and suspected Jasper ate it. After some diagnostics, we determined he had a foreign body and recommended we do surgery asap to get what what’s blocking his intestinal tract out. Dr Hanna preformed the surgery and once he was in he discovered part of the intestine where the blockage was had turned necrotic. Dr Hanna took out the foreign body (which did turn out to be his owners missing sock) and the necrotic section and performed a anastomosis.

What is an Anastomosis?
It is a surgical procedure in which a portion of the large bowel or colon is removed and the remaining ends are then connected. This surgery is used in emergency settings when a blockage or a severe perforation is present in the digestive tract.

We are happy to say Jasper has made a full recovery and is back to his goofy self!

Meet Dewey 💧

Dewey came to see dr. Maharaj because he was straining to urinate and unable to pass urine. He was diagnosed with a urinary obstruction so we quickly got to work unblocking him.

Cats that have urinary obstruction require emergency treatment. Sedation or general anesthesia is needed to allow placement of a catheter into the urethra to flush out the plug or force the stone into the bladder. The bladder is thoroughly flushed and drained through the catheter to remove any remaining sediment. The urinary catheter is then typically left in place for a few days until urethral swelling subsides. Once the catheter is removed, the cat is then evaluated to make sure they can urinate freely before being discharged from the hospital.

It takes a team! 👏

Our ortho surgeries are big procedures and a lot of care and effort gets put into them! There are lots of special instruments that dr Hanna has to use and they require special care and preparation. We ensure everything is completely sterile and the preparation of the patient is a very particular process. It sure is a lot of fun working together as a team to ensure our patients get the best care and that the surgeries go smoothly!

During all of our procedures we have a dedicated technician monitoring all the vitals and controlling the anesthesia. For this TPLO we did, we had our tech Barb keeping a close eye and making sure our patient’s vitals were stable.

For some of our larger procedures we have an extra hand scrub In to assist Dr. Hanna in holding or positioning anything he needs. During this TPLO we had Dr. Maharaj scrubbed in and assisting Dr. Hanna.

Then of course we have Dr. Hanna, performing these special procedures to ensure these pets get the best quality of life as possible!

Not pictured is the behind the scenes clean up our amazing Tech assistants do and the client care and communication our wonderful receptionists do!

With wildfire season starting, it’s a good time to get an evacuation plan prepared in the event of an emergency. In some cases evacuations can be very sudden with little to no warning. It’s a good idea to make sure everyone in your family knows what they should do and grab in the event of an urgent evacuation, this includes things to pack for your pet. One of the best ways you can be prepared for your pet is to create an emergency/evacuation kit:

Your kit should include
- sturdy pet carrier or crate (labelled with pet’s name & your contact info)
- food & bottled water (7–14 days worth)
- medications (2 weeks supply)
- copy of pet’s medical records and vaccinations (in waterproof container)
- food & water dishes
- extra leash, harness and collar
- kitty litter and tray (foil roasting pans work as an alternative litter box)
- extra toys & blankets

Use your pet carrier to store your emergency supplies.

Meet Caeser!
He came to us with a huge lump on his back! Dr. Hanna was able to perform a lumpectomy, carefully removing the lump. The lump weighed a whole 4.5 kgs, that’s about the average size of an adult cat! This lump was carefully packaged up and sent to the lab for testing to ensure we properly identify what it is.

Did you know that sending lumps to the lab for dogs can save lives? By analyzing lumps and bumps, veterinarians can determine if it’s a harmless cyst or something more serious. Don’t ignore those mysterious lumps – get them checked!

Meet Theo

Theo ate something he shouldn’t have, a sock! Luckily after we induced vomiting, it came right back up and we were able to prevent him from getting an intestinal blockage and needing surgery.

Foreign objects in a dog's mouth or digestive system can pose several risks to their health. Here are some potential dangers to be aware of:

1️⃣ Choking Hazard: Small objects or toys can easily become lodged in a dog's throat, causing choking and difficulty breathing.

2️⃣ Intestinal Blockage: If a dog swallows a foreign object, it can get stuck in their intestines, leading to a blockage. This can cause severe pain, vomiting, constipation, and even require surgical intervention.

3️⃣ Internal Injuries: Sharp or jagged objects can cause internal injuries as they pass through the digestive tract. These injuries may require medical treatment or surgery.

4️⃣ Toxicity: Some foreign objects, such as certain plants, household chemicals, or medications, can be toxic to dogs if ingested. This can result in poisoning and potentially life-threatening complications.

5️⃣ Gastrointestinal Irritation or Inflammation: Objects that are not meant to be ingested can cause irritation or inflammation in the digestive system, leading to discomfort, vomiting, diarrhea, or other digestive issues.

It's important to remember that each dog is unique, and the severity of the risks can vary depending on their size, breed, and individual chewing habits. That's why it's crucial to keep a close eye on your furry friend and take preventative measures to minimize the chances of them encountering and swallowing foreign objects.

Meet the three legged cat named Captain! 🚢

Captain was having some reoccurring urinary blockages but thanks to Dr. Hanna, he was able to get a life saving surgery to prevent him from re-blocking. This surgery is called a perineal urethrostomy (aka PU).

What is a perineal urethrostomy?
Perineal urethrostomy surgery is a specialized procedure performed on cats to create a new opening for urine to exit the body. It involves removing a portion of the cat’s blocked or narrowed urethra and reconfiguring the urinary tract. This surgery helps alleviate urinary obstructions, which can be life-threatening if left untreated.

Captain has now made a full recovery since the procedure and will live a long healthy life.

🐾🦷 Did you know that brushing your pet’s teeth is crucial for their overall health? Regular dental care for our furry friends can prevent dental diseases, bad breath, and even more serious health issues. By maintaining their oral hygiene, we can:

- Prevent plaque and tartar buildup: Brushing helps remove food particles and bacteria that can lead to plaque and tartar formation, which can cause tooth decay and gum disease.

- Avoid dental diseases: Poor dental hygiene can lead to painful conditions such as gingivitis and periodontal disease. Regular brushing can prevent these issues and save your pet from discomfort.

- Improve their overall health: Dental problems can impact your pet’s overall well-being. Bacteria from oral infections can enter the bloodstream and affect vital organs, including the heart, liver, and kidneys.

- Save on veterinary bills: Preventive dental care, including brushing, can save you money in the long run. Treating dental diseases can be expensive, and regular brushing reduces the risk of costly dental procedures

Remember, it’s never too late to start brushing your pet’s teeth. Contact us for guidance on proper techniques and suitable toothpaste for your furry friend. Let’s keep those pearly whites shining and ensure our pets enjoy a happy and healthy life! 🐶🐱🦷🪥

Meet Ginger!

Ginger came to see us just before Christmas to get a TPLO procedure done and we made her bandage into a Christmas tree! 🎄

What is a TPLO surgery?
TPLO surgery involves reshaping the top of the tibia bone to stabilize the knee joint. It aims to change the dynamics of the knee, reducing the need for the CCL and promoting stability.

Why is it necessary?
CCL injuries are one of the most common orthopedic issues in dogs, often causing pain, lameness, and limited mobility. TPLO surgery helps restore joint function, alleviate discomfort, and improve the overall quality of life for our furry friends.

How is it performed?
During TPLO surgery, an experienced veterinary surgeon will make an incision, access the knee joint, and carefully cut the tibia bone. The bone is then repositioned and stabilized using specialized plates and screws. This new bone position reduces stress on the CCL and allows the joint to function more smoothly.

Recovery process:
After surgery, proper post-operative care is crucial. Dogs will need to rest, follow a rehabilitation plan, and take prescribed medications. Physical therapy exercises can help strengthen the surrounding muscles and promote healing. Full recovery may take several months, but with patience and dedication, most dogs regain their mobility and live a happy, active life.

Benefits of TPLO surgery:
- Improved joint stability
- Reduced pain and inflammation
- Enhanced range of motion
- Long-term functional outcomes
- Increased quality of life

We are happy to report that Ginger has made a full recovery and is doing great! ♥️

🐾❤️ Valentine’s Day is quickly approaching, don’t forget about your furry friends’ safety! Show them some love by keeping these pet safety tips in mind:

- Keep chocolates and sweets out of reach. They can be toxic to pets.

- Avoid using candles or open flames. Pets can accidentally knock them over and cause a fire hazard.

- Keep flowers and plants out of reach. Some can be harmful if ingested.

- Be cautious with decorations. Ribbons, strings, and small objects can be choking hazards.

- Create a calm space for your pet. Loud noises and festivities can be stressful for them.
