Shawn tried to tell me that they were starting to hear, I think he might have been a bit early on that, but not for long! Little Mani loved the smell of the peppermint tea, but Sol did not so much (check out the comments for that video)!
Also, make a mental note, maybe don't drink the tea at our house. It could have had a puppy nose in it! ;)

Well these kids are growing insanely fast! Clearly Momma is doing a great job caring for them! Mani is at 2 lbs 10.5 oz and Sol is 1 lb 12.6 oz. 😮 At night we do their Early Neurological Stimulation (ENS) exercises and then we do their Early Scent Introduction (ESI). Every night we introduce a different scent. Tonight we tried peanut butter and Mani licked the peanut butter on the spoon! 🤦 I guess he liked it!

Luna is being an amazing momma. And these kids are growing like weeds! Little Sol might be smaller, but she is a strong girl who gets where she needs to be. She's not getting pushed out of the way!

We think we have their names. Sol and Mani. Shawn wasn't going for Lugh or Tyler. In Norse mythology, Sol and Mani were the Sun and Moon, or more precisely, the beings who drove the Sun and Moon in their courses through the sky. Sol and Mani were sister and brother, and both were fair and beautiful.

Sol (little female), is up to 1 lb 6.0oz and Mani is up to 2 lbs 2.7 oz!
Tonight while doing their ESI (Early Scent Introduction) we introduced maple syrup. They were pretty neutral about that one.

Wow these kids are growing! Little Lady is 1 lb 0.6 oz and her big brother is 1 lb 10.8 oz!!! 😮 Luna is still being pretty difficult to convince to eat much, but she is eating some, drinking lots and super focused on her babies. Check out the comments for an adorable video! If anyone wonders why Borderline puppies love belly rubs... Well they start pretty early in life! 😉❤️💞

Well these kids sure are growing! The big boy wasn't as good at posing as his sister is! ❤️ Luna continues to be a great mom. She was a bit more settled today and ate more for us. Major surgery and being a first time momma are both hard things.

Well Luna might not be eating well still, but she is eating some! She seems to prefer Shawn's cooking (I'd be offended if I wasn't so relieved) and they shared a box of Kraft Dinner tonight! LOL This morning I made her cheesy scrambled eggs and she would only eat them if I hand fed her! 🤦 Yes we are trying a lot of other things too, but the girl knows what she likes apparently. I know that this is temporary, so we can indulge her for a bit. That isn't holding the babies back any though. In 2 days the little girl has gained 2.8 oz and the big boy has gained a whopping 4 oz!!!

So today has been a bit of a rollercoaster again. Poor Luna is such an attentive momma that if the pups move or make any noise she is all over them and is a bit stressed. She is sooooo very careful of them, it's so sweet to watch. Luna also is being very reluctant to eat. A good friend who is a fellow breeder and breeds way more litters than we do said that this isn't uncommon the day after a c-section. Of course it's stressing me out though. Shawn, being the best husband ever, picked up some liver and other things to entice her to eat tonight. He even cooked the liver (which he is hates) and gave her a little charcuterie plate of liver, cubed up cheese and some kibble. The liver and cheese were a hit, but the kibble clearly was too pedestrian for her sophisticated palate! 😉 I don't care, as long as she eats! This girl has always had a great appetite, so her not eating makes me worry.
The babies are doing really well. Little girl has gained 1.2 oz in her first 24 hrs and big boy had gained 1.8 oz!!! Wowsers!
And of course we can't keep calling them little girl and little boy. You guys know that I need to give them names and puppies born during a full Solar Eclipse to a momma who was born on a full moon, will need great names! That said, what names do we pick? I really like Sunny and Shadow, except Shadow is a little too common of a dog name I think. Shawn and I both liked Selene for the girl and I love Lugh (pronounced Lou) for the boy. I like Selene because Selene was the Greek Goddess of the moon, whereas in Roman mythology the Goddess of the moon was Luna. (Shawn likes Selene because he has a thing for Kate Beckinsale and that was her character's name in the Underworld movies! ) Also little girl looks a lot like her momma. As for Lugh... He was the Celtic god of the sun and light, and he was also known as a powerful warrior who was known for being wise. Lugh, the god of justice was also sometimes depicted as a trickster. I feel like since I call Luna, Lu all of the time, it's an appropriate nod to his awesome momma, although super confusing too. Meh... it's fine for the 8 weeks while he lives with us. The Sun God part is a nod to the eclipse and he is a warrior who has survived a difficult birth. And the wise and trickster parts... He's a Border Collie, we all know that those fit really well too!
Our friend Monica made the excellent point that they obviously need to be Bonnie and Tyler and she might be on to something there! I feel like given this entire situation, they have been a 'Total Eclipse of the Heart'. What do you think?

I know that several of you are waiting on puppy news, so here goes... It's been a long few days and I've had about 6 hrs of sleep in the last 3 days. We x-rayed Luna on Thursday to get a puppy count. I knew that it was going to be a small litter based on how small she still was. Sure enough, the x-ray showed only 3 puppies. Ok... And sure enough after a prolonged stage 1 of labour, she started to deliver today, the day of the Eclipse, like predicted! We got the first little girl out and Luna was such an attentive momma. She did not like us touching her baby! Long story short, the second pup got stuck in the birth canal, so we opted for a c-section. We lost puppy #2, but we choose to focus on the fact that we were able to save the black and white male pup that was in third position. And thankfully Luna had the little girl first and she got the chance to love her for awhile and care for her. Otherwise first time mommas sometimes wake up from their anesthetic and want nothing to do with the little creatures who are suddenly there and calling her mom!
So we have two pups. A black tri female who looks a lot like her momma in markings, and a black and white male who is much bigger and looks like his daddy, Cruz. Not only were they born on the day of the eclipse, but Luna was in labor throughout the eclipse.
We had a sizeable wait list for this litter, and we have reached out to the people who we can't provide a puppy to this time. I'm so sorry.
So far we are thrilled that Luna is being a Superstar momma.
We are also incredibly thankful to everyone at Thousand Islands Veterinary Services who made Luna and her babies a priority today. Without you guys, this little boy definitely would not be here. ❤️ Thank you all.

Our little athlete isn't looking so svelte right now with a week to go until her due date. And yes, it's true... her due date based on ovulation is Monday April 8th, the day of the eclipse! Now that said, our guys often go a day or two early.
Luna and her littermates had a solar system theme when they were born since Cara was whelping during a full moon. What are the odds that a 'Luna' would be due on a full solar eclipse? These are once in a lifetime babies for sure!

You know that your husband is a keeper when you mention weeks ago that you want more hand towels before the puppies come, and he picks these up. He said that they were cheaper than what he could get at Value Village. Now the colour choice is questionable, considering I'll be using them to dry off placenta covered puppies, but I'm not complaining! ❤️

We got this lovely update from little Oak from last year's Cara X Spot litter and we thought that we'd share it. His name is Lobo and he lives on a sheep farm. His owner says:
A very social dog that loves people and the attention he gives them, in turn everyone loves him. As far as training, the basics are established. Working on 'away' and 'come by' now. Getting him lie down mid run has been working very well. Taught him to high 5 in about 10 minutes this week. Also working on silly things like run between my legs, circling through etc. Incredibly smart dog who's learning is only limited by my ability to teach. He is obsessed with sheep and especially their lambs right now.

Another fun agility Friday night! Whoever designed this course is a twisted individual I think! 😉❤️

🤞 If all goes well, we will be expecting early April puppies with our girl Luna (right) and her new beau Cruz! If you know us very well, you will know that Luna owns a special piece of Tracy's heart. This lady is sweet and cuddly, has an incredible off switch and is easy peasy to live with. She was doing very well with her herding training until she severed a tendon in her front leg in a freak accident. Thankfully she is sound and pain free unless she runs a lot, but it cut short her herding career. She is naturally incredibly athletic and fast. Luna also is completely clear on her genetic screening, her elbows and shoulders are OFA normal and her hips are scored OFA excellent!
We've been on the lookout for awhile for a male who would make a great cross with Luna and we think that Cruz is it! He is a super outgoing and sweet boy with a fabulous off switch. His father was a red and white, and was also a Super Dog. Cruz has had his genetic clearances done and is OFA normal for elbows and shoulders and is OFA Good for his hips.
We always strive for healthy, happy pups that can be active in whatever area you want, but that are also easy to live with. We think that this cross should produce that in spades! And side note, we might get some red and tri pups. Tracy can dream for a rough coated red can't she? ;)
If we are lucky enough to get pups, they will be due early April and will be ready to go to their new homes early June! What great timing, thanks Luna! Several pups are already spoken for, but let us know if you're interested. We are beyond excited for this litter! 🤞

Well it's been an exciting week here. We got Holly's genetic test results back and she's clear on all diseases tested and she carries red! YAY! We're a long way from making any breeding decisions with her, but this was step one and it went exceedingly well! Then today we got Luna's OFA results (Orthopedic Foundation for Animals-you take xrays and send them to experts to look for signs of dysplasia, etc). Luna's elbows and shoulders are all normal (clear of dysplasia/OCD) and her hips scored EXCELLENT! Luna's genetic results came back long ago and she is clear on everything and carries red. She also carries the gene for long hair, so she can produce both short and long haired pups depending on the sire of the litter! She also had an all clear/normal result on her eye exam from a board certified veterinary ophthalmologist!
And... Now Luna is in heat. The prospect of having puppies going to their homes in June sounds awesome, but we aren't sure. The puppy market hasn't been as strong lately and finding good homes is always the most important thing. Luna is Tracy's 'Golden Child'! She is sweet and smart, biddable, has a strong herding instinct and her training was going well until she severed a tendon in a front leg. You'd never know that there was anything wrong with her, but we don't want to push her or cause her any pain. She is sensitive and wants to snuggle when you had a bad day or if you are under the weather, but she's also independent and is on watch here all of the time. She's polite and loves to play, but isn't under your feet all of the time and she is exactly the type of dog that we always want to breed; she's so-so easy to live with.
I guess we'd better make a decision soon!

I decided to feed the sheep before it got more slick outside. As you can see, the girls tried hard to convince me to play (some harder than others)! Sorry girls, there will be no toy throwing on the ice, we don't need torn cruciate ligaments!

Our Goals at Borderline Border Collies

We breed to produce healthy, social puppies that will excel at anything that comes their way. We choose our breeding dogs carefully. And we support our mommas throughout pregnancy with supplements and high quality nutrition and medical care. We do not cut corners on medical care or nutrition for momma or her babies. I am a Registered Veterinary Technologist with over 20 years of experience in a vet clinic. So the care of all of our dogs is our #1 priority. We work hard from day 1 handling our puppies and exposing them to different smells and people. As they get older and their eyes and ears open, we do more and more of this. We use Early Neurological Stimulation exercises as well as many Puppy Culture principles to help our babies to become confident and out-going puppies!

We do not breed often. One or two litters per year is all that we will have. When one litter goes to their new home, then we focus on finding a great stud dog for our next planned breeding that is usually many months away. We will research new ideas or ways of socializing our next litter. We add at least one new thing each litter. It could be a wobble board, or toys that bounce around and make noise, or one that lights up or makes animal sounds. We are always trying to think of new (and safe) things that the puppies can explore. Doing this when they are young helps to make them into confident and inquisitive dogs as they grow up! This is very important as this breed can easily be skittish or standoffish if they don’t have a strong background that builds confidence.

Check out our albums from our different litters. We post videos of the pups being cute, or when we start exposing them to new things like thunderstorm sounds, or a slide, or a new fun toy. It is important to us to stay in touch with everyone who has a Borderline pup! If you have any questions or concerns, please send us a message. Hopefully this page will become a brag wall for all of you and your four legged babies!
