Purple Paws is an organization that was founded on the premise that every dog deserves to be loved, cared for and to be provided with a safe and forever home. In the beginning Fort Erie desperately needed a safe place for dogs to be while they awaited their forever home. Since opening Purple Paws in November of 2021 we have experienced overwhelming community support and we have been able to cultivate partnerships that will last for many years to come.

Our resources have allowed us to provide support to those experiencing hardship and as a result, giving dog guardians the ability to keep their dogs out of shelters.

A few of our challenges and successes have included a senior dog that needed medical care. She lived the rest of her life in a loving home and was given the best year of her life pampered with love, car rides, and all the food and warmth until her eventual passing a year later. Other successes include 5 dogs that were rescued and cared for on behalf of another rescue organization. We saved dogs from a local shelter in need of medical care and after being treated medically, found them their forever homes and gave them their second chance of having the life they so deserved.

It is with sadness that Purple Paws has decided to announce that we are dissolving the rescue for the time being. We will still be here for animals and will continue to serve them in whatever ways possible. Our hearts will still continue to call on us for fundraising efforts and community education to better inform responsible pet ownership. Our rescue collaborations will result in other entities being able to continue their much needed work, we applaud their tireless involvement in animal rescue work.

Due to the generosity of our supporters we have been able to donate to the following organizations and in so doing have given them a little boost of financial help to help with all those animals they serve. Tails of the North was provided with $4000,00 to help them in their amazing efforts, if you have not heard of them, look them up and help out if you can. The remaining amount of $1012.90 was donated to Happy’s Place. They were so kind and supportive to us as a rescue and we know they do such great work. If you’re looking to adopt or support a rescue for seniors, show them some love. A large supply of collars, dog bowls, leashes, and other items were happily donated to Happy’s Place and Tails of the North.

We would like to thank all those who have been involved with Purple Paws and who have made a huge difference to the dogs and other animals over the past two years. We could not have done this without each and every one of you. We greatly appreciate volunteers, community members, and any other supporters who stepped forward in contributing to the success of Purple Paws. Purple Paw's Board of Directors couldn’t have achieved all the success we have enjoyed without the hard work and big hearts that joined us with enthusiasm and dedication.

Please continue to rescue and support rescues. The struggle is real right now in dog rescue, they are all literally busting at the seams with intakes and surrenders. We can all do our part to help. Have your pets spay and neutered and please adopt, don’t shop. They need you.

Sincerely,

Board of Directors

This boy is awaiting some tests. He went to the vets this week to do some bloodwork and other tests. Send him some love if you can. We hope to get the results tomorrow.

He also got groomed. He had a lot of mats so he had to be shaved but we have a super cozy coat for him. Thanks for all the love and support for him. 💜

Let us reintroduce you to our friend Grommer. He has had a rough couple weeks recovering from surgery. He has been such an amazing boy. Grommer had some complications after being neutered due to his hatred for his cone. Thankfully has allowed us to take him in and be with him through his healing. We are so thankful to have this shelter support us , but more importantly the dogs. This sweet boy has stolen all our hearts. He is doing amazing. His progress and healing has really been such a miracle. This boy is such an old soul. He is 1 year and 2 months and he is looking for his forever home. We know that the perfect family is out there for him. Grommer is good with other dogs and cats. He needs to work on some basic obedience but is otherwise the perfect dog. He is house house trained and knows how to let you know when he needs to go out. Grommer has a very gentle personality and is so curious. He takes every opportunity to take part in what you are doing and wants to be part of it. He is not ready for adoption yet as he still has another couple days with this cone. We would be so happy to tell you more about him if you think he would be a good fit for your family. Looking forward to hearing from you 💜

We would like to introduce you to some special friends looking for their forever home. Socks is a 10 month old bouvier mix. He is such a curious boy. His character matches his ears perfectly. He is such a playful dog. Socks loves chasing the ball, playing with his brothers and treats. He gets excited and likes to jump up but we have been working on that. He needs to learn some house manners, but with time and love and patience we know he will thrive in a loving home. He listens well and knows how to sit. He loves attention, but he also plays well on his own. His fun and goofy personality will put a smile on your face everyday. We can guarantee it.

Wilson is the sweetest boy. He is a 10 month bouvier mix. Wilson still likes to chew and has some house manners to learn. This sweet boy makes up for his lack of experience with his gentle and kind nature. He really likes being around people. He always wants to be included in what you’re doing and be part of it. He loves being by your side and resting his head on your lap and chest. Wilson jumps up at times but is a smart boy and we know he can learn anything with time, patience and love .

Grommer is a 1 year old bouvier mix. He is definitely an old soul. He loves playing ball by himself or with you. He loves sitting by your side and getting pets. He is a calm dog when he is able to get his energy out. He rolls over for belly rubs and just stares into your eyes almost as if he is trying to figure out this new world of love and affection. Grommer loves to run outside, especially in the snow. He is a gentle and playful and loving.

These dogs will be available for adoption Please go to https://lchs.ca/adopt/ and fill out an application if you can give one of these sweet dogs a loving home. 💜

This afternoon we said goodbye…. for now … to our sweet Roxie. You came to us almost a year ago. You were the first official Purple Paws rescue dog. We weren’t ready as a rescue, we were still in the paperwork stage of it all, but you came to us and we just knew we had to help. We knew that no matter what you would be loved and cared for and the rest we would figure out from there.
What we didn’t know, is just how much you would change our lives for the better. ..And the lives of everyone who met you actually. That showed today, as people lined up in the driveway to come and see you. You were a force Roxie. You knew what you wanted and would tell us all the time. You were fierce and strong and at the same time so gentle and calm. You were a teacher. Through your strength, you showed me how to keep going. Through your stubbornness and drive you taught me perseverance. Through your ability to love everyone you met, you reminded me of the importance of being loved and to be kind. Throughout the last year so much had been going on and you were there through all of it. You always made us laugh and reminded us daily that this is why we do rescue. You had a strip of purple paint on your tail from when we were painting the walls at the kennel, you were always a part of everything we were doing. I have never witnessed so many people love one dog so much. Mike, you stayed with Roxy every night so that she could know the comfort of a warm bed with a person she loved. Vi and Jerry your home was her home too. She loved you and spending her time at the barn. Anita, you made it your mission every morning to come out and get Roxie… it didn’t matter if it was sunny or snowing or cold.. you loved her and she loved you. I could go on forever talking about how much you enriched her life by being in it. We are so appreciative to Dr.Locking who went over and above for Roxie. Times are so challenging for anyone in veterinary care and we want you to know how much you have meant to us and how grateful we are for all of you. There are so many people to mention that we’re friends to Roxie. We love and thank you. If love alone could have kept you here, you would have lived forever 💜

I could go on forever talking about how much you enriched her life by being in it. We are so appreciative to Dr.Locking who went over and above for Roxie. Times are so challenging for anyone in veterinary care and we want you to know how much you have meant to us and how grateful we are for all of you. There are so many people to mention that we’re friends to Roxie, just know we love and thank all of you who were part of her journey.

And so the quote goes… “if love alone could have kept you here, you would have lived forever. “

Until we meet again Roxie💜

We are sharing this post for Chris. He is hoping to find Lacey her forever home. This is the information he provided to us. Please message Chris if you would like to meet Lacey.

Meet Lacey, she is 3 years old. She is very friendly girl with lots of love to give. She is originally from North Carolina. Lacey is playful, she likes her toys and craves attention. She would do best with a family that can give her the exercise she needs. Fenced in yard would be ideal. Lacey does not have any formal training and could use some manners. Lacey would do best in a home where she is the only dog and children over 12. If you are interested in Lacy please contact Chris 289-321-1141

We are sharing this post in hopes to find the perfect home for Abby. Please message us if you are interested in meeting her .

Meet Abby, a beautiful Shepsky (Sheppard/Husky) that is looking for her new forever home. Abby is almost 3 years old and still has some puppy energy when she gets excited. She is an amazingly behaved dog, almost never barks, great with people and children. She is house trained and never chews household items or jumps on furniture she is told to stay off of. She gets along with most dogs, but will sometimes get too excited when she wants to play. Although eager to meet most dogs, some don’t get along with her, and she is not afraid to stand her ground. Abby loves going on walks above all else and really needs 1-2 hours of exercise per day. She has good leash skills, but can get excited and need a reminder not to pull. Like most Huskies, Abby has a very strong prey drive, which causes her to chase small animals, especially rabbits. It is likely she will never be an off-leash dog, as she is eager to explore and hunt. For this reason, there should be no cats or other small animals in Abby’s new home, and Abby should always be on a leash or in a secured yard. She can be an escape artist and has climbed fences that are 4ft tall. A home with a tall fenced-in yard would be best for her, ideally with another puppy to play with. Abby is a large dog, weighing 65lbs, so her new owner needs to be able to handle her pulling when she gets excited. She has inherited the husky’s sensitive stomach and is susceptible to diarrhoea when something bothers her digestion. Related to this, her glands are prone to becoming impacted when or if bouts of diarrhoea occur and are likely to need to be expressed after these instances. Abby is looking for a new home because her former owner passed away. During her time being fostered her foster parents have fallen in love with her dreamy blue eyes, her love of endless petting sessions and her quiet, calm (when indoors) presence. They would like any potential adopters to know that she’s smart and quick to learn new commands, constantly drawing compliments from people she passes on her walks for her stunning good looks and a wonderful companion for anyone who wants a dog that’s always ready for petting sessions or to play but is seldom underfoot. Our girl deserves the best! So, if you are interested in having this wonderful, fun, affectionate, and independent dog join your family, we’d love to hear from you! Contact us and let us know why you think you’re the best fit for this dream dog. Abby has been spayed and has all of her shots. Toys, leashes, collars, food, treats and scoop bags are ready to go alongside her to ensure a smooth and happy transition.

It is with an incredibly heavy heart that we write this post. Saturday morning our sweet Finn took sick, we called multiple emergencies and everyone was at full capacity. Thankfully Hamilton emergency took us in. Finn was not himself, he had thrown up his food and in visible pain when he would lay down or even try to bark. Once he was checked in and assessed the dr gave us the devastating news. Finn had a tumour on his spleen, and it ruptured. He was bleeding internally. We were told we could do blood work and more X-rays to find out more. And we did. The dr told us that Finn was in a lot of pain at this point, and if surgery was an option it would be $7000 and there was a very good chance we would loose him on the table. We are devastated. We had to say goodbye to our sweet Finn. He was so loved and so cared for by morocco animal aid, they sent him to us knowing this boy deserved a better life, a family of his own, a bed and couch to sleep on. He was sent to us to love and to spoil. And we did. We just wish we could have done it for longer. His foster mom is beside herself, he made such an impact on her life just in the short time he was here. Everyone from the beginning of this transport and to the end that met Finn was taken by him. He would just look at you, as if he was looking right into your soul. He was an incredibly special boy. I know that every dog is special in their own way, but Finn was a force. I believe he knew all of this before we did. He lived for every new experience and loved every pet and every kiss. Finn would jump up on you and wrap his arms around your neck. He knew love and he gave it right back. He had a name and he belonged to us all. As I write this, tears continue to run. I know that Finn is no longer in pain, and we are all thankful for that. Our hearts are broken, our light is dim. We will always take his memory with us and remember that sweet and loving boy and the times we had. Until we meet again Finn. We whisper we love you still in every silent moment. You will not be forgotten. 💜
