Wood Buffalo Animal Rescue Committee is ran completely by volunteers who have dedicated their time and love to help rescue animals in need.

Wood Buffalo Animal Rescue Committee is an organization dedicated to helping animals across the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo as well as all surrounding areas. The rescue was formed to help the remote community of Fort Chipewyan with the over population of stray animals and animals that needed to be re homed. Over the last couple of years it grew into a bigger mission and helping animals in all the surrounding area of Wood Buffalo.

Adoptable Chase!🩵

Meet Chase, a sweet and playful boy looking for his forever home! Chase has been doing wonderfully in his foster home. He has been caught playing with one of the cats on occasion —such a good boy! He’s also developed a bit of a funny habit of hoarding toys. He goes to the toy box, picks out his favorites, and takes them to his crate (don’t worry, it’s not aggressive, just cute and a little quirky!).

He’s comfortable going inside and outside on his own but prefers the company of one of the other dogs in the house. Chase is also a champ when it comes to taking his meds—such a good boy! Chase is ready to find a family that will appreciate his sweet nature and adorable little habits. Could he be the perfect companion for you?🩵

Meet adoptable Buddy! 💙

Buddy (previously known as one eye!) is a 1-year-old mixed breed with a heart full of love and a gentle nature. He may be a bit shy at first, but once he gets to know you, he’s a total sweetheart. You’ll often catch him softly licking the cats, showing just how gentle and kind he is.
Although Buddy is still a little nervous about car rides, he’s making great progress every day. He’s cool, calm and collected once he’s in there but sometimes he needs a little help getting in and out of the car, but with time, he’s starting to feel more comfortable. His foster home and his crate has become his safe space, and he’s gaining confidence in new situations.
Buddy is a quick learner— He’s working hard on his commands and learning to take his treats gently. He’s also figured out the food routine and has caught on to the fact that a treat awaits when he heads into his crate. (You could say he’s definitely food motivated! He even requires a slow feeder to make sure he doesn’t gobble down his meals too quick!)
Buddy is looking for a loving, patient family who will continue to support him as he grows and becomes more confident. We believe Buddy would do best in a home with another furry companion, he is thriving with his foster siblings and they are helping him gain some much needed confidence! 🐶

We can’t believe Pickles is still in foster care—she’s such a gem! Pick Pickles!

This girl is a whirlwind of energy & wiggles who absolutely LOVES to play! She’s a friendly, affectionate girl who thrives in the right environment.
In September 2023, she came to us, had her babies, and then returned to her original home. When she came back into our care, it’s no surprise she was protective of her food, especially after so many changes. She’s had many foster families too, so naturally, she wasn’t keen on sharing—who could blame her? But with the stability of a steady foster home, familiar faces, patience, and positive reinforcement, she’s made great progress. (We are so proud of her 🥰)
These days, she happily eats side by side with the other dogs in her foster home without any issues. Even the cat can walk by her while she’s eating or enjoying treats, and she remains calm and relaxed.
She’s an energetic, curious pup who loves greeting anything walking by or flying past the window. 🐦‍⬛ She’s playful, loving, and a big fan of older kids, toys, blankies, and bully sticks! With patience, understanding, and lots of love, Pickles would make a great addition to any family. 🏡

Did you know dog culls occur all the time across this country? Including currently within the RMWB. These culls are not about cruelty, but about addressing human safety. When dog overpopulation happens, and basic needs such as food and shelter are not being met, the dogs will pack up as a means of survival and become a safety concern.

The overpopulation problem of dogs in rural and First Nation communities is a deep, longstanding, and systemic issue tied to the effects of colonization, isolation, and ongoing social challenges. Labeling dogs ‘dangerous’ without addressing the underlying issue indicates a community in crisis.

Culls are an act of genocide and lead to trauma and can contribute to mental health issues.
The solution lies in prevention over reaction–improving access to spay/neuter clinics, promoting responsible pet care programs, developing and enforcing community bylaws around dog ownership, and supporting community-driven solutions.

Many of these communities are working hard, but it’s just not enough—they need help. The cycle continues, and it’s time to raise awareness that this is happening across our region.
Collaboration with local leadership is vital, and we commend the actions already being taken—but more support is urgently needed.

Adopt Togo | 1 Year | Husky Mix

Togo joined us in November and has been winning hearts ever since! Full of energy, curiosity, and love, he’s finally ready for his forever home.
Before coming into our care, Togo was mostly an outdoor dog and lived with other dogs, a cat, and older kids. However, for the time being, we believe he’d thrive best as the only pet in his new home.
This smart boy loves puzzle toys that challenge his mind (though softer toys don’t stand a chance!). He loves greeting others across the fence and is quite the jumper, so a secure yard is a must. He’s already good at sitting and shaking paws, showing how eager he is to learn. He’s a huge cuddle bug and gentle ear rubs are his absolute favourite.
