🐾 : Meet Blaze, the Malamute Who Defied the Odds! 🐾

When a family welcomed an Alaskan Malamute puppy into a home already bustling with two young boys — one of whom lives with a severe seizure disorder — they discovered the perfect companion. The pup was gentle with the child needing extra care, instantly became the other brother’s best friend, and proved to be the sweetest snuggle buddy for Mom and Dad.

But at just a few months old, Blaze began pacing, panting, and hiding in corners…then suffered a seizure on the couch. Multiple ER trips and thousands in vet bills brought a devastating diagnosis: an intrahepatic portosystemic shunt. The family was heartbroken and out of savings. They feared losing their little guy. 😢

That’s when our community giveback program and VCA Canada Calgary North Animal Hospital stepped in. The family was connected with an expert surgical team and they were walked through every risk, including the chance of refractory seizures similar to their son's. But it was decided; Blaze was going in for surgery.

Twenty-four hours later…Blaze was brighter, steadier, and seizure-free! 🎉 And when Mom finally brought him home, Blaze was so happy he peed all over the room. Tears of joy flowed as the family reunited.

“Blaze was meant for us,” the family says. “He reminds us never to give up on the ones we love.”

Thanks to Paw It Forward and the compassionate dedication of the North team, Blaze is thriving, and this family has their fur baby back.

This is why we do what we do.💙

🐾 Meet 🐾 Ryan | Pets, Pride, and Cherries Without Pits

Ryan’s family always loved pets. He had a bunch of them growing up. Too many to count. Well, maybe too many for him to count - he confesses that he was never any good at math; “They brought a lot of love into our house and that was always a part of my world, so when an opportunity to work at VCA Canada came up, it was a no-brainer. It wasn’t my first career thought, because I thought there was going to be a lot of math and sciences. I was worried I wouldn’t understand that side of it. But when I got here I found out that pets don’t care. In a lot of roles, it’s more important to be good at loving things than it is to be good at math.”

Ryan found his stride at VCA Canada; "Here you can just come as you are. You are just you. And we are here for every walk of life. We have a Pride flag and a sign on our door that says "We are all welcome". Pets have a way of teaching you all you need to know about unconditional love.”

In 2018, Ryan helped launch our first Pride booth in Toronto, volunteering without hesitation. Handing out treats and giving the animals all the love they deserve, he helped transform a corporate event into genuine community outreach. That spirit carried us across Canada from Saskatoon to Victoria, London, Ottawa, and Calgary Pride, growing stronger and stronger each year.

HIs enthusiasm is remarkable. He says his Mom used to describe him as a bowl of cherries with no pits. So he has made it his goal to take pits out of cherries, wherever he goes. Always asking himself “How do I make their day better? It could be a pet. Could be a client. Could be a co-worker. Could be anybody.” Well Ryan, we did the math and having you as a part of the team is a huge, huge plus.

At , we believe that pets love unconditionally, and so should we. We strive to be a safe, welcoming space for everyone, always. 💙

🐶🐱 Pet Parents, Let’s Talk Weight! 🐱🐶

Did you know nearly 6 in 10 pets are carrying extra pounds? That extra weight can sneakily fuel arthritis flare-ups, diabetes, even heart strain.

But the good news is you do not need a total diet overhaul to help your fur-baby slim down. Try swapping a few treats for green beans, adding just 5 extra minutes to your daily walk, or splitting dinner into two smaller meals.

& dare we say ✨ limit treats ✨ (yes, even when you get hit with the puppy eyes!)

Those tiny tweaks will add up to big wins, which equals more playtime, fewer aches, and a tail that won’t stop wagging.

🐾 - Meet Eddie 🐾

Eddie, an irresistible eight-year-old Chihuahua–Miniature Pinscher mix, arrived to us with dental disease so advanced it wasn’t just tartar and plaque. He had tooth resorption, where the body actually begins to break down parts of a tooth, causing pain and weakening the tooth structure. This finding meant this wasn’t a simple cleaning; our team had to plan every step to keep Eddie safe and comfortable.

Thanks to our community giveback initiatives like the program, and working with his owners, Eddie’s dental procedure was scheduled without delay. Our incredible veterinary team at VCA Canada Riverbend Animal Hospital expertly addressed the resorption, delivering almost instantaneous relief. His recovery was smooth and swift, and his family tells us he’s already back to greeting every moment with a happy wag and bright smile!

Nothing lights us up like seeing a senior pup finally take a pain-free bite, and moments like Eddie’s first comfortable chew remind us exactly why we do this work.

Here’s to brighter smiles and healthier lives!💙

🐾 : Griswold’s Journey 🐾

Griswold, a 4-year-old Lab mix, lives for playtime, tail wags, and keeping up with his family. But when he tore a crucial ligament in his knee, everything changed. He was in pain, unable to move like he used to, and he needed surgery to get his life back.

His owner was doing everything she could, but the cost of the procedure was still out of reach.

That’s where and VCA Canada Bellbrae Animal Hospital stepped in.

With nomination of the case from the team, and support from the fund, Griswold received a TPLO surgery from a visiting orthopedic surgeon and the dedicated staff. He was surrounded by care, compassion, and people who believed in giving him a second chance.

Today, Griswold is thriving; soaking up every ounce of love (and belly rubs) as he heals.

We know, that when we come together for the ones who can’t speak for themselves, we change lives. Paw by paw.💙

Do you know the signs of in pets? Lyme disease isn’t just a concern for humans, it can seriously affect our pets too, especially dogs who spend time outdoors in grassy or wooded areas.

Early signs can be subtle, like fatigue or loss of appetite, but may progress to joint pain, fever, and even kidney issues if left untreated. That’s why prevention and early detection are so important.

🐾 Meet 🐾 Farnaz | The Doctor With a Twist

Growing up Farnaz always loved science. And horses. Her parents were very academically focused so they loved that she loved science. They wanted her to become a doctor. But those horses - they ended up leading her to a different stream . “I told my parents, ok, I’ll be a doctor…but with a twist.”

The horses reined her in with how they expressed themselves without words. How something as simple as a flick of an ear, or their posture could tell you everything you needed to know. “I felt like I understood them and they understood me.” Communicating with animals and understanding them on an emotional level, remains a passion of hers to this day.

Fast forward some years, and Farnaz got to be a part of our . One of the most hands-on, immersive experiences a can have. Every year, we welcome students from across the country and give them real clinical experience, while making sure they feel supported, mentored, appreciated and heard.

She’d already worked in five other clinics before joining a VCA Canada hospital, but she noticed right away; "...something felt different here. The way they treated me was unlike anything from other clinics. Pretty much every single person in that building was helping me learn.”

She got more exposure and opportunity, rotating through , , , , and even . “I was getting right in there. I even got to scrub in on surgery. It really showed me how all the specialties work together. You had access to everything. I really valued how my learning was actually prioritized. They don’t just care for pets. As a student, I felt cared for by VCA Canada.”

Farnaz has since graduated and moved to to start her career as a Doctor (you hear that Mom and Dad?) of Veterinary Medicine.

Her experience in the DVM Summer Student Program proved to her that whether you walk into a VCA Canada Hospital on two legs or four, you are in good hands. And because they take care of the people behind the pets, the pet care only gets better.

🐾 Paw It Forward Spotlight: Meow Meow’s Journey 🐾

This week, we’re proud to highlight a powerful story of compassion and community support from our amazing team at VCA Canada Mississauga Oakville Veterinary Emergency & Specialty Hospital. Their dedication and heart made all the difference for a very special patient: Meow Meow, a 1.5-year-old domestic shorthair who survived a devastating house fire.

Meow Meow arrived with severe burns to her face, paws, and ears, and was oxygen-dependent due to smoke inhalation. Her family was hospitalized from the fire, and a caring neighbour stepped in to bring her to safety. That same neighbour also helped rally the community to pool funds for her treatment. An incredible act of kindness that set the stage for her recovery.

Thanks to incredible community efforts, a donation from our hospital, and our program, Meow Meow received the intensive care she needed. As she healed, her sweet and gentle personality began to shine through, winning hearts and reminding everyone what resilience looks like.

Stories like this truly inspire us and we are so grateful to be part of a network that puts compassion at the heart of care.
