Pawz Furst Dog Grooming

Pawz Furst Dog Grooming From basic baths, bath and tidy’s, full grooms, canine dental cleanings and everything in between 🐾 My name is Samantha Allison, I was raised in Greenwood BC.
(5)

I absolutely loved growing up in my small community. I have two fur babies of my own. Bindi is a 4-year-old energetic Red Merle Australian Shepherd. Then there is Kona. My beautiful 9-year-old, Havanese crossed Pug (a Hava-pug) who is food obsessed. Growing up, I was always surrounded by animals. While most teenagers were taking babysitting jobs, I was taking dog sitting jobs. In my late teenage y

ears I started farm-sitting, this is where I had the chance to work with dogs working on the farms and so my love for dogs continued to grow. In my 20's I spent time bouncing between Merritt and Greenwood, the two places I loved the most. In 2019 I started working at Pet Valu in Merritt BC. Through them I received my Pet Expert Certificate, specializing in dogs. I also personally worked with dogs that were difficult with nail trimming and started realized how important this was, the need for helping these dogs was in very high demand. I also worked with a lot with dogs with allergies, weight problems, dietary issues. I took additional training on different foods, and products whenever the chance arose, building my knowledge base. I am well educated in most brands of foods including the raw food diet. With my experience working there I began to see another need; groomers were in high demand. This would begin the next chapter in learning about dogs and continue with my love for them. I was accepted into Western Dog Grooming School. There I received a hands-on education along with an in-depth education on more than just haircuts. This school taught the importance of being educated on how to care for the different styles of coats, the different skin conditions, parasites and proper de-matting techniques. I received my PIJAC Canine Specialist Certificate, as well as my PIJAC (now known as Pets Canada) Dog Talk Attestation Certificate. Through Western Dog Grooming School, I completed my 12-week practicum. Received my Professional Grooming Career Diploma from WDGS. Also receiving my WDGS Canine First Aid Certificate. I am now working towards my CPPS certificates to become a master groomer. I have also completed my level 1 anesthesia free canine dental training. I worked as a chairside dental assistant for almost 3 years. Before returning to working with animals. Making the transition from human dental to canine dental less of a challenge.

Its true. It is important to ask questions.

Its true. It is important to ask questions.

Did you know that pet grooming is a completely unregulated industry? There is no requirement for formal education, no required continuing education, and no required testing or certification?

Anyone and everyone can just pick up a pair of clippers and start advertising themselves as a groomer and charge people for a service they aren’t trained to perform.

It’s completely up to you, the owner, to do your research and make sure the person you are trusting with the health and safety of your pet is qualified to care for them.

Every groomer should be trained, and that very basic training takes months.

It takes years to truly master the ins and outs of grooming and everything that goes along with it.

Pet grooming is so much more than just a hair style.

*It’s knowing dog behavior and how to safely handle all the different personalities and quirks.

*It’s recognizing health conditions that would be better suited seeing a vet such as skin or ear infections.

*It’s being prepared for any and all emergencies that can happen, from seizures to allergic reactions, to nicks and cuts and quicked toenails without panicking.

*It’s knowing how to best deal with a variety of coat types properly.

*It’s being able to know when to stop a service on a particular dog due to behavior or health.

*It’s having the knowledge and patience to handle a different species while holding razor sharp clippers or 8 inch long scissors.

At the very least, the groomer you use should seek out continuing education to make sure they are current on the changes in the industry, from upgrades in products to tools that make the process easier for the pet and them.

They should be current on their pet cpr/first aid certification which needs repeated every couple of years.

They should be able to answer your grooming related questions with knowledge and confidence and if they don’t know the answer they should know where to find it.

They should have an emergency plan in place with a local veterinarian in case anything happens, because when working with animals it’s not a matter of if something happens, but when.

They should come recommended by other pet owners and pet professionals.

And it’s worth noting that there is nothing wrong with using a groomer that is still in training, but they should be working alongside an experienced groomer and under their direct supervision.

Ask the questions, after all you are paying them for a service. A groomer who has spent time and money to be as educated as possible is excited to share their knowledge!

These are a couple of our geriatric visitors we had recently. They come for compassion grooms. No the groom isn’t perfect, but we try to only do what they can handle. The first boy Buddy is blind and doesn’t hear so good. He gets held for most of his groom. Dried on our lap. The other boy is visiting us from Peachland, Brownie 💜 he had matting that had to come off. He Also suffers from arthritis and two bad legs. He needed special support while we worked around those legs and needed lots of breaks. It’s a fine line between working quickly to get them done (we don’t want them to be away from home too long) and slow enough that they are comfortable and have enough breaks.

Freddie was in to get his summer cut. He is ready for swimming now! It is very easy for dog coats to become tangled and matted after swimming if not brushed out properly. Please remember to take time afterwards to do some brushing to prevent matting from occurring. It makes for happy fur-babies 🐶🐾

This beautiful girl Molly 💜 today was a slow and steady day for her. This girl loves to swim as much as possible. However, with this long coat, it makes for horrible matting. So today’s challenge was 1) saving her coat 2) finding a way to style her coat to make it easier to maintain for swimming this summer 3) keep her comfortable.
After we brushed, detangled and dematted her, (This was the time consuming part) we gave her a really good bath and blow dry. Afterwards we did nice and tight finishing work. In a few areas we did have to cut some matts out because there wasn’t a humane way to get them out. Sometimes the matts are in just too sensitive of an area. Humanity over vanity is a priority to us. See you next Month Molly.

Everyone has to meet his little guy Jacks! He is a standard American Eskimo. Jacks had a compacted coat. This guy had a lot of patience while we worked at untangling his coat. Boy were the results worth it! What a beautiful transformation.

Very important information 😊

Very important information 😊

As the temperature rises owners of fur bearing breeds begin to realize their pets are hot. Mistakenly, many think that clipping these breeds down will help them be cooler. Nothing could be farther from the truth.
This time of year it's common to see these breeds 'blowing coat', meaning that massive amounts of undercoat are shed out at once. However, clipping is not the answer. Instead your professional groomer can remove that crazy amount of undercoat and help keep it in check year round.
This allows the coat to properly perform it's job of keeping the body cooler. The attached undercoat works like insulation keeping cooler air near the body while the guard coat reflects heat away. But when loose undercoat is not properly removed it impedes the coat from doing it's task.
Professional groomers provide so much more than a haircut. Talk to your groomer about booking an appointment for your fur bearing breed to keep them comfortable year round!
