With new information provided by a veterinarian this morning, Evergreen Park will be closing the Drysdale and Lewis Hawks to all haul-ins until further notice and approved by Management. At which time, there will be new protocols and rules set in place for all haul-ins.

Hello Patrons of the Lewis Hawkes & Drysdale Arenas,

It has been brought to my attention that there is concern for our equine friends contracting the cold/flu virus that has been going around arenas in the Peace Country – (Lakota Centre & Teepee Creek Arena) Unfortunately there is very little that Evergreen Park, as a public arena, can do to combat such situations, although we would like to provide some tips and best practices to combat a virus/flu in your equine:

• Pay close attention to appetite and water intake. If you feel that your horse needs to drink more water you can supplement with electrolytes or add salt to water/feed.
• Check their temperature daily.
• Check their gums for adequate pink colouring – discoloured gums can mean dehydration.
• Nasal discharge: Nasal discharge should not be the only sign you look for when determining their cold/flu like symptoms. Nasal discharge can be from dust, shavings or natural drainage. Consistency is key here. If discharge is yellow or green and of thick consistency is likely a cold/flu symptom.
• If at any time you are concerned for your horse's health, you are encouraged to reach out to your veterinarian of choice to discuss.
• Weather plays a large role as we have seen various changes in our weather patterns in the Peace Country, especially if they have been taken out of the facility and then brought back inside.
• Viruses are carried (especially cold/flu viruses) by humans handling other horses that carry the virus but show no symptoms (typically older horses) along with dogs, cats etc.
• Proper sanitization between handling horses is encouraged to avoid cross-contamination.
• Younger horses are more susceptible to colds and flus as they lack the immunities that older horses have built over the years.
• All horses at Evergreen Park are required to be vaccinated, although that doesn't always mean they won't contract a cold – similar to humans.
• Avoid use of public areas such as turnout pens to avoid contraction.
• Please do not pet, feed or handle horses that you do not know without proper sanitization before handling another.

As always, haul in riders are to stay in designated areas and are not permitted over in the stabling area. Tie spots for multiple haul in horses are located in the Drysdale Arena or along with behind the bucking chutes of the Lewis Hawkes arena. During this cold season, it is also recommended that you disinfect the area prior to tying your horse.

As a public facility, users are aware that if your horse is ill, they are not to enter the facility. The blame for equine illness should not and will not fall on anyone. Unfortunately, horses can get sick, and it is the responsibility of horse owners to make a treatment plan while consulting your preferred veterinarian if you have questions or concerns regarding the treatment/symptoms of your animal. Bringing a horse into a public facility will increase the risk of them catching an illness.

Evergreen Park will not accept any responsibility for the outbreak as it is Peace Country wide, but we will do our best to help all our patrons combat this situation and follow proper protocol as we sincerely wish you and your equines the best. Evergreen Park and Staff will not tolerate any harassment on any level. Harassment or aggression geared towards boarders, haul ins, Staff or Management will result in possible loss of riders pass or loss of boarding accommodation although it is our hope that we can all work together to battle this cold and flu season!

Any concerns or questions are to be brought respectfully to the attention of the Barn Manager either over private text message, phone call or in person meeting in the office located at the entrance of the Lewis Hawkes Arena.

This is one of the beautiful ladies that will be on sale on Monday at the third annual Ladies Of The Peace Heifer Sale in the Evergreen Park Pavilion (Lewis Hawkes and Drysdale Arenas). There is a viewing Sunday from 3-5 p.m. and again starting Monday at 10 a.m. with the sale kicking in at 1 p.m. on Monday.

Due to the incoming snow storm, the organizers have opted to cancel the roping event at the Drysdale Arena in the Evergreen Park Events Pavilion tonight (Friday, Nov. 22). 4-H is also cancelled for Saturday.
