Hello all!
HD Equine is no longer on a voluntary quarantine.

We are clear of our virus!

The vets told us we had to wait ten days from our last fever to which we did, I also enforced an extra 14 days ontop of that just incase to which the vets agreed was not a bad idea

We have not had any fevers, symptoms, temps nothing in 26 days

There were a number of things we did to make this process easier and get through it as quickly as we did

- Kept all the sick horses (4) inside the barn the rest were moved to temp outdoor board. Yes it was during the coldest weeks of the year and yes it sucked but we made it through
- no one but the owners of the sick horses were allowed entry in the barn during the quarantine period
- Had our own red zone that had the four stalls inside it, it had virkon foot baths at both entrances of it, and the floor was virkoned daily
- seperate clothes and shoes were worn inside the red zone,
- horses inside the red zone were given health checks morning and night and if meds were needed they were given
- we completely gutted the rest of the stalls in the barn, shavings, salt licks etc were thrown out. All stalls were washed down with virkon and then bleach
- hay nets, water buckets, feed tubs, crossties, hooks etc all virkoned and bleached
- we purchased a w**d sprayer and used that filled with virkon and water and sprayed down the walls in the indoor arena. Sprayed all our poles standards etc anything that a horse may have contacted during this period

When we had the horses clear inside and were able to be turned out there stalls were completely gutted. Then we did a virkon scrub, let it sit, virkon scrub let it sit and then bleach and water scrub and then shop vacuumed the water up off the floor to clean the stalls. We also virkoned then bleached the floor in the red zone and vacuumed that up as well to remove all the water.

It was endless weeks of cleaning and double checking our steps but it was totally worth it when we made it through this as quickly as we did. Its very exhausting work but I’m hoping that maybe anything I did here could help someone else get through whatever comes up in their barn one day

If anyone has any questions please feel free to ask!

HD Equine is currently under a voluntary quarantine.

Jan 8th we had a indoor boarded horse spike a fever of 40 degrees C

This horse was immediately put on a quarantine and the rest of the barn inside at the time was temperature checked. Those with a fever moved into Isolation those without moved outside to their regular fields and paddocks. All outdoor horses were also temperature checked and any with even the slightest fever or suspicion was brought inside into quarantine.

After a few days working with multiple vets in the area, Mckee, Bennett and Campbelville we finally got test results back

We are pcr and culture negative for both
STRANGLES
EHV-1

Some of the tests came back with
EHV-2
EHV-5
Streptococcus equi zooepidemicus (not strangles)

All are a viral virus so we have voluntarily put our barn on a quarantine for the foreseeable future until we are completely clear and have the okay from vets

No horses are to come or leave our property
No lessons
No coaches

The incubation period for said viral virus is 10 days so we are doing minimum 10 days with no fevers and no medications as per the vets

We had made it to day 8 today when pur oldest patient had spiked another fever. Vet came out and ran blood work (waiting on results) vet is confident this is a bacterial infection secondary to the original virus.

HD EQUINE will remain on a quarantine until we can be certain no other horses will come up with any other fevers or issues.

Should anyone have any questions or concerns about this virus please comment or message me and I will answer what I know and direct you to one of our vets with things we dont know yet.
