Everyone appreciates how smart pigs are, but they are not very good engineers. They had dug down almost a foot here in their metal shelter, and with the expectation of rain/snow and piglets, I had to move it and refresh some hay. She had it nicely distributed to hold a good sized litter of 12 piglets the next day. Glad i didnt wait any longer. PDG 2K still going stronger at 3.5 years of age.

That black recessive gene in my older white park bull is going to limit his workload going forward. Doesn’t really make any difference when the calf is a bull. So really hope to get a white heifer calf out of one of the shorthorn crosses next year!!

Just a few more white park pics. A couple of this years good looking bull calves. Will test them out next year to see whether they carry the recessive black gene. Number 4 in the last pic is a beauty, she is warming up as the years go by…ie not interested in trying to kill me anymore!!

This is going to be one good looking boy when he grows up. Momma is Belgium/shorthorn cross and daddy pure white park….close to the composite breeds of the speckled park.

Not sure it would qualify as a “good” run but after 18 years there are no more sheep at the farm. Between coyotes at one extreme and worms at the other, there were certainly challenges.

This cow had twins yesterday. She probably got a bit confused with the extra little voice bawling at her, and quickly decided that one was enough. She clearly picked the larger more robust red twin. Both females which is good, and I was able to get three feedings of colostrum into the rejected black one. Still not great odds with this situation.

This young bull is maturing quite nicely. Only problem is he is too big for any “miniature” offspring, as he is about 50 inches at the back hips. He is primarily belted Galloway but has longer legs from some Dutch Belted genetics. So homozygous in terms of the belt.

The speckled park breed of cattle is the only Canadian developed beef breed. It is a composite breed, meaning developed by combining other breeds. Specifically it was a shorthorn/angus cross bred to a white park bull. So any pure speckled park should have half its genetics consist of white park.
This little collection includes a young pure white park bull, a pure speckled park cow and a galloway/white park cross cow. I’m going to use the speckled park as I would an F1 cross like the Galloway cross is.

Testing my young white park bulls for the black recessive gene is made easy with a herd of red and black. This young bull is about 15 months of age and should be able to manage 10-12 cows, but I think he has bred 3 in the 10 minutes I’ve been watching. He needs to get his nose into the feed more!!
