Experienced sows really develop a full udder before they farrow. Even in this pic Haven could be a week away from having her litter. Whereas the first timers have a much less developed udder and the one in the second pic could have piglets tomorrow.

I hinted at this in the spring, but I think given the lack of demand for registered stock this litter from Haven will likely be my last one that I register. Then I don’t have to carry three boars or worry about fences quite as much as whose your daddy doesn’t matter quite as much. We have sent registered stock from one end of the country to the other so Paddy Green Acres will be on family trees for more than a few years to come!! Merry Christmas to all.

How can horned parents have a polled calf? Must be a somatic mutation.

This is a pic of a bull from the Chillingham Park herd. These Chillingham cattle did contribute to the genetics of the White Park herds in the early 19th century but the flow of genetics is reported as only one way. It may be responsible for occasional reddish tinge to the ears of the White Park. They tend to be smaller animals with bulls only 300 kg…but I wouldn’t want to run into this guy!! They are not tamed in any way.

Took one day too long!! Two litters have combined into one!! Born same day with sister mothers, 11 live piglets in both. They may still separate at feeding, but they should have been tagged before 10 days of age when they really start to wander to be certain. Will try and get a couple registered with their spring litters.

Ruby is a champ with the Ferrier, no halter on the open pasture. She is the good extreme!!

Like many of the local farms, our animals at Paddy Green Acres enjoy pumpkins at this time of year. Please ensure that candles, matches, toothpicks, even knifes are removed before you throw them over the fence. The seeds are perfectly fine, and in general if you can’t eat it then the pigs probably shouldn’t either.

Time to put in the clean up hitter for a few weeks. Hopefully he finds there is no work left to do!!

“Perfection is a direction not a destination”. After 15 years I think Irish Princess is as close as I will get, and I think she combines a total of 11 different bloodlines that I have acquired over the years. I have had issues with ears, backlines, black spots, skin colour, Duroc looking, and litter size. But this girl seems to have it all and this last litter was a nice one!! I’ll keep breeding her so long as she produces a litter of at least 4. She may be the last one to leave the farm as the word retirement creeps into my vocabulary!!

She had at least four options for her piglets that had good protection from the rain, with lots of bedding. Instead she chose an open field and then farrowed just in time for the most rain we have had in a month! Anyway will see if any casualties tomorrow when she comes up to the barn to eat. Looks good for a first timer, as I see nine.

Almost lost two calves Sunday night, one stillborn and the other rejected. With some work, at least the one mom’s instincts kicked in and I was able to convince her that her calf had jumped back to life….covering it in the birth fluids of the dead one helped!! Mom pushed it away a couple of times, but her will to be a mother overrode. Once nursing I knew they would be fine. They are inseparable now!!

And as one group finishes up, the next group gets started!! Expecting all the smaller cows to calf out over the next couple of weeks. Hard to believe these two new arrivals share the same sire.

The last of my white park cattle delivered the other day. The cow is 50% white park, hence the lack of horns, but the all black calf also means that one of bulls carries the black recessive gene as well. He is a beauty of a calf, 75% white park, just not sure where I can use him….yet!!

Just for the sake of documentation, going forward any 100% white park will have white tags. The F1s that are 50% will have red tags, the 75% F2s will be yellow, and the 87. 5% will be blue (will be at least a couple of years before I have any of those).

Just a couple of weeks to go until the white park start to calf. It’s a balance of excitement and fear!! Going to move them to where I can more easily separate moms from their calves to get them tagged and get some hair for DNA. Pretty sure a few of these moms will not tolerate me being in the same field.
