The speckled park breed of cattle is the only Canadian developed beef breed. It is a composite breed, meaning developed by combining other breeds. Specifically it was a shorthorn/angus cross bred to a white park bull. So any pure speckled park should have half its genetics consist of white park.
This little collection includes a young pure white park bull, a pure speckled park cow and a galloway/white park cross cow. I’m going to use the speckled park as I would an F1 cross like the Galloway cross is.

Testing my young white park bulls for the black recessive gene is made easy with a herd of red and black. This young bull is about 15 months of age and should be able to manage 10-12 cows, but I think he has bred 3 in the 10 minutes I’ve been watching. He needs to get his nose into the feed more!!

I think I may be a hoarder deep down, I know I need to reduce numbers but there aren’t any cows I want to sell!! lol

Today had my six calf out of my smaller White Park bull. He wasn’t looking so well last year, even tested him for Johne’s disease, but he still did reasonably well. All are white so the probability that he carries a black recessive gene pretty darn low.

This White Park cow, is affectionately known as BOC which stands for Big Old Cow. She is the herd matriarch, having been born in 2008. Her genetics have influenced the herd like no other. She looks like she has one last calf in her!!

Not to imaginative but I call this cow Dun. She has produced a full set of colours over the years. This years and last years bull calves.

Well, fourth time was the charm. First heifer calf from the white park herd!! Three more of the pure cows to go, and hoping to get more than two this year. At least a couple of crosses are females as well.

This little guy really is a good looking boy. He has a good 3 week head start on the other pure white park calves. Will likely use him with the F2s (75%) in a couple of years assuming he matures nicely.
