Why dogs don’t need grains..... breaking down the science of their biology.
Let’s set the record straight: dogs are not tiny carb addicts in furry suits. The idea that grains belong in your dog’s bowl comes straight from marketing teams—not Mother Nature. So, let’s dive into why your pup doesn’t need grains and what they truly thrive on.
Dogs are facultative carnivores. This means they are biologically designed to eat meat and can occasionally survive on plant matter when meat is scarce. Notice the word “survive.” It’s not about thriving—it’s about scraping by. So why are grains like corn, wheat, and rice pushed as “essential” for dogs? Easy answer: they’re cheap fillers. They’re not in your dog’s food for their benefit; they’re there to pad the bottom line of big pet food companies.
Here’s the science: your dog’s digestive system is made for breaking down protein and fat, not grains. Unlike humans, dogs produce minimal salivary amylase (the enzyme that helps break down carbs in the mouth). Their pancreas steps in to help digest carbs, but forcing it to do so constantly can lead to long-term issues like inflammation, obesity, and even diabetes.
Pancreatitis is not caused by over consumption of fats as the western veterinarian world has convinced you.... It's over consumption of carbs.
Now, let’s talk about the elephant in the room: taurine deficiency and heart disease. Grain-heavy diets can block your dog’s ability to absorb taurine, a critical amino acid for heart health. This is why we’ve seen an alarming rise in conditions like dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) in dogs fed grain-based kibble. More and more today dogs are dropping dead of heart attacks at ages 3-4-5 and it's beyond sad plus sickening knowing it's all preventable.
So, what should your dog be eating? A species-appropriate raw diet built around fresh, whole, animal-based foods. Think raw meat, bones, and organs. No fillers. No junk. Just real food that supports your dog’s optimal health.
Feeding grains is like fueling a Ferrari with biodiesel—it’s cheap, but it’ll ruin the engine. Your dog deserves better. Cut the grains, trust the science, and watch your dog thrive.
Knowing what your dog is eating because you made it becomes the biggest relief. Why? You know exactly what they are eating and trusting no one else for your dog's nutrition. 🐾
