Don’t be a litterbug! This is an important lesson to teach children.

If you look around your community, there's a good chance you'll see litter scattered all around. this week we are discussing how litter has a massive impact on the local wildlife.

Here at WILDNorth, we frequently encounter animals with their heads stuck in jars, lids trapped around their necks, and plastic entangled around their legs, among other situations. Wildlife sometimes swallows fishing lines or other types of litter. As you can imagine, even after we remove the litter from the animal, it often leaves behind serious injuries.

When we do spot an animal entangled in litter, capturing them is frequently difficult or even impossible because they don't realize we're trying to help. We always do our best to attempt to rescue any wildlife, but if they are still mobile, they unfortunately often manage to escape.

Another situation where wildlife may be harmed by litter is during bird nesting. While searching for suitable materials like grass and twigs, birds often come across pieces of litter and incorporate them into their nests. Sometimes, these materials include plastic that can become wrapped around or consumed by hatchlings. Other times, they might use sharp objects like screws, which can be very harmful to the baby birds.

Now that we understand how litter can cause harm to wildlife, let's discuss how to prevent this from happening. Of course, we urge everyone reading this not to litter. Beyond that, you can make a small but significant difference in your neighborhood by picking up litter when you come across it and disposing of it properly. It's also important to ensure that your garbage bins are securely closed and that you don't leave garbage bags in your driveway or back alley. Some animals may smell food remnants and tear open the bags, inadvertently creating a mess of garbage that could entangle local wildlife. Even these small, individual actions can play a significant role in helping the wild animals in your area!

On-Farm Petting Zoo & Pony Ride visits: LAST OPEN WEEKEND in 2023 Oct 7, 8, 9 from 11:00 to 4:00 (weather dependent). Last admissions at 3:00 to allow time to experience the highlights before 4:00 closing. After that, we are CLOSED for the winter until we reopen in the spring of 2024 (mid-May).

Please phone the farm to confirm if we are still open if weather forecast for Edmonton/Camrose is for RAIN or bad weather.

Walk-ins welcome on our open dates. $18/person ages 3+ by cash or etransfer at the farm. All inclusive - includes pony rides for children < 100 lbs, many hands-on animal interactions and feeding, and a tractor-pulled wagon ride.

You are welcome to bring your own snacks and non- alcoholic beverages as we do not sell food and beverages on the farm.
