The CDC has changed the requirements for dogs traveling to the United States as of August 1, 2024 again. There is a new form available, which can be found on the the CDCs website. Dogs will still need to be at least 6 months of age to travel from Canada to the United States, but no longer require a certificate to be filled out by a veterinarian. As always, a valid Rabies vaccine is required to return to Canada from any country.
You can also check out Dr. Scott Weese's worms and germs blog for more information https://www.wormsandgermsblog.com/

Updates to CDC’s August 1 dog importation rule: If you are bringing a dog into the US from a dog rabies-free or low-risk country, you now only need to fill out the simple CDC Dog Import Form. Other forms are no longer needed. The requirements for dogs arriving from high-risk countries have not changed, and these dogs are still required to have additional documents. For all our clients with pets traveling to the United States or planning too, please be aware of the following changes brought about by the CDC. Please contact the clinic if you have any questions regarding your pets travel to the states as they will need microchips and up-to-date rabies to travel. Please note, like all other small animal exports, you will be required to provide all CDC documentation needed for your travel, as it will not be provided for by the clinic. We will continue to give updates as they come, but please know these changes are not brought about by the Canadian government or individual clinics, this is brought about by the US government, and must be followed with no exceptions. Thank you from the Highview team!

Starting on August 1, all dogs entering the U.S. (including those that left the U.S. and are returning, and regardless of the country they are coming from) must be:
• healthy upon arrival
• at least 6 months of age
• microchipped
• accompanied by a CDC Dog Import Form receipt and required vaccination and veterinary documents.

Additional requirements may apply depending on where the dog has been in the last 6 months and whether or not the dog was vaccinated in the United States.

Use CDC’s Q&A tool (the CDC “DogBot”) to determine what rules apply to your dog: https://bit.ly/2rww2bq

Happy international woman’s day! As a clinic that is almost entirely women (our office manager is the lonely brave male!) we are so proud of our fierce and strong female staff. There is a misconception out there that females can’t be large animals vets, that we are not strong enough or capable enough to handle the tasks that come with large and mixed practice, but we are proud to squash that stereotype! Happy international woman’s day everyone!
