Sutter was invited to school, great exposure for him to children as he needs to work on his confidence around them. Awesome opportunity. The only way to learn new things is by continued exposure!
Before I brought him in, I explained to the kids what I wanted them to do and how to help me. Stay in your desk, don’t reach out to grab, just let Sutter watch you. Kids are wonderful training helpers, they always do exactly what they are asked!

Riggs went to his first Reading with Riggs #pettherapy visit this morning at a new school. He attentively listened to their story reading and got to know the kids a little.

Continuing Care visiting is harder for Riggs than his reading program with the kids. That’s bc Riggs is asked to go from one resident to the next on repeat for approx 30mins, sit snug to the wheelchair, allow petting, and stay still. Whereas his reading program he stays in one spot on his place mat and the kids come and go.
Riggs is an awesome dog, he tries hard and listens so well. We are working on a new idea for continuing care visits so that the residents have a better visual of him.

A small peek into Riggs’ pet therapy at Continuing Care. “I think he likes this!” “I think he does too!”
Looks pretty simple right? To just stand there and be petted. But it does take a special dog to accept these kinds of things. Riggs was “full on” when we arrived, revved up and excited, if left to his own devices he would have tore around the hospital at full craziness jumping on all the beds!!
When we arrive there are also a few Seniors who are whistling & kissing for him to come to them, Riggs has to completely get his working pants on and tighten the belt.
He knows how to “shut off” on command and that is what I ask of him when we enter, it takes about 30 seconds to get focused and then Riggs is ready! He stands peacefully and accepts & enjoys the touching, talking.
He is unfazed by new smells, wheelchairs, different people, voices. I ask him to tuck in tight so residents can reach him easy without extending themselves. He is patient.
When we leave, Riggs gets a big “Good BOY!!” Outside with lots praise and he knows he has done good! We stay approx 30 mins. He IS a good boy!
