Poem

Now that the weather has finally broke, there will be some busy ranchers and horse owners today. Everybody’s got to catch up on that list of things they couldn’t get done because it was too cold. Hope you have a great Saturday and don’t work too hard, take a minute to soak up that sun!

When The Weather Breaks

When the weather finally breaks and the wind comes blowing in
There’s a list of things you have to do
You’ll finally get a chance, so it feels just like a win
Another cold hard stretch, you’ve made it through

All week you kept on saying, I’m going to fix that bowl
As you trudged across the yard with water pail
Cause four trips a day, has finally took its toll
When the weather breaks, you’ll fix it with out fail

When the weather finally breaks, I’ll trim that pony’s feet
At minus -38 it’s hard to do
I’ll grease the loader too, I just need a little heat
Cause the grease won’t move quite like I want it too

The wood is getting low, need to get some split
But that splitter motor doesn’t like the cold
The bedding’s getting sparse, have to add a little bit
And the chicken water’s getting kind of old

The arena ground needs worked, and lots of gates to clean
There’s a slippery spot there by the tack room door
The manure pile is spread out, worse mess you’ve ever seen
Need the tractor and I’ll push it up some more

The sunshine feels so good, warming up on you
It makes you want to stop and soak it up
Rest like a saddle horse, not much you want to do
But there’s not much time to stop and fill your cup

When the weather finally breaks, I better get to work
Cause my list kept piling up from day to day
I better put my head down, not a task to shirk
Before the weather drops, I’ll get it squared away

That old cassette tape truly lit a flame inside of me
It helped to solidify, a cowboy I would be
Ian Tyson, 1992, and cowboyography

Ray Hunt, 2002 , and turning loose
No VHS tape ever made, got that kind of use
He worked the horse from where it’s at and never made excuse
From that day on, I’ve met the horse to try make a truce

Waddie Mitchell, 2005, and Buckaroo Bard
Serious and thought provoking, but also quite the card
He drew you into his story, you felt just like his pard
He touched the funny topics but also some were hard

Look back through your youth, at the things that lit a fire
Who helped you to build your dreams and your desire?
Today they call them influencers, but not many do inspire
They lead the young ones down a path that is often times quite dire

I used these tapes quite often, when I was at home
But didn’t have them tied to me, like a modern day cell phone
Todays young quite concern me, cause they never are alone
They don’t sit with themselves and build ideas of their own

So take the lesson that I learned, from these men I never knew
That out there, there’s a kid who wants to do just what you
So always be respectful and give kindness through and through
Although you might not know it, you’re an influencer too

Is It Cold Enough For Ya?

Is it cold enough for ya? Now where did that start?
Or it’s colder than a witches heart?
Or a bankers handshake or well diggers ass
Who thought all this up, is what I must ask?

When you ask, is it cold enough for ya? I’ll give you a stare
What do you think? I’m a damn polar bear?
Or a snowman, a penguin, or maybe a seal
Why do you ask? Tell me what is the deal?

I’m a cowboy that works outside you see
Just a little bit cold is too cold for me
If you’re gonna get anything done for the day
Stopping to warm up just doesn’t pay

If you’ve ever handled reins or a rope
When it gets cold, it’s sure hard to cope
Your fingers will freeze, in just seconds flat
A little bit cold is too cold for that

When starting a c**t or riding outside
The elements take it’s toll on your Hide
In a still position, with reins to hold
Why would you think that I wanted it cold?

I sure don’t walk around and complain
From negative chatter, I try to refrain
From doom and gloom, I try to walk passed
But just remember, it was you that asked

Is it cold enough for ya? If you ask me that soon
I’m gonna kick your butt to the moon
Where it gets down to minus one thirty three
And it isn’t a pleasant place to be
And I will send you a message to say
Is it cold enough for ya? and be on my way

If It Didn’t Work Out

If it didn’t work out, don’t hang your head
God might have just saved you from ending up dead
You’re five minutes late, and you bout go insane
But you might have just missed, a wreck with a train

If you get sent home, from your first year of school
Don’t hang your head and feel like a fool
As a year passes by, it’s not what it seems
Right out of nowhere, comes the chance of your dreams

The equipment is ready and all set to go
The hay is just perfect and ready to mow
But you got a flat, then it started to rain
Hay is still standing, the loss is your gain

You’re Blessed when it didn’t work out in your life
Or you may have wound up with a different wife
Or a different husband, in an unhappy place
You’re glad it didn’t work out, if this is the case

Each morning you plan as you saddle your horse
You just never know how things change the course
If it didn’t work out, I guess you just smile
And wait on God‘s plan and be patient a while

Fun Friday Poem! I may have slightly exaggerated on this one!!!

Getting On

I wouldn’t say I’m old, but I’m not a kid no more
Some things that where so easy, have now become a chore
Like peeing once at bedtime and sleeping through the night
Without getting up a dozen times, would sure be kind of nice

Pulling on your socks, without first sitting down
Or not needing a few days, to psych up go to town
Of all the simple chores, that now are left and gone
The one I hate the most is the act of getting on

When it came to mount a horse, I had er down just pat
And I’d scurry up the side, just like an old barn cat
I used to grab the stirrup and up the side I’d go
Well now, I’ll likely rip my shorts or an O-ring just might blow

If I have too much pierogi when Easter comes around
I can’t get on my horse, without making quite a sound
I don’t just mean the groaning or the sound of heart attack
I mean the other ruckus, that’s coming from the back

I wish that I could get, a grease ni**le in my knee
When it came to bending, how easy that would be
If it got a little stiff, well I’d just add some grease
It would get all supple and the aching sure would cease

Now winter is the worst, when you’re plump as Santa Claus
Wearing all them layers, sure doesn’t help the cause
And if you’re in a hurry, I wouldn’t ride with me
Cause getting on will take a while, I’ll tell you that for free

Now I’m not ready for the grave, I don’t mean to sound that way
I am awful grateful for the health I have today
But the days without a mounting block, have surely come and gone
From here on out, I’ll struggle when it comes to getting on.

Ode To The Trail Horse

His eyes are closed
there’s flies in his nose
His head is hanging low
He’s made two trips already today and still has one to go
He knows the route
and what it’s about
And every turn in the trail
He’ll take them out and then bring them back safe,
every ride without fail

He’s carried the wealthy,
surefooted and stealthy
into places, few people have been
He’s carried a child,
into country that’s wild
and as pretty as you’ve ever seen
The one on his back
seldom gives enough slack,
but he goes in spite of their skill
He plods on along
with a gait that is strong
With a calm and determined will

He’ll cross the water
With the lawyer’s daughter
On safely across the stream
He won’t bat an eye
When the camera guy
Drops his reins for the shot of his dreams
When the windbreaker flaps
And they crinkle the Maps
He carries on unaffected
He Ignores the moose
Is un phased by the goose
And goes where he is directed

He’s a special kind
With a special mind
With a desire to just get along
His days seldom change
He rides the same range
Where the wind and the birds are his song
When summer nears
The children he hears
Running in from their long car ride
It’s worth all the pain
With their face in his mane
And they smile from the smell of his hide

Many a child
Has dreamt of the wild
And a chance to feel natures force
They’ll get there chance
To feel this fine dance

The Bay That Starts The C**ts

He’s the bay that starts the c**ts
His confirmation has some faults
But he comes to work each and every time
He’s felt a million jolts
When them youngsters tried to bolt
But he never ever, waivers on the line

Their eyes are big and wild
Like a terrified young child
But he softly lays his nose upon their side
And snuggles in right near
And he draws away their fear
he puts a softness in their trembling hide

He seldom gets much praise
For those long and stressful days
When his calm demeanour saved an awful wreck
When he he’s been kicked and bit
From a fear induced c**t fit
Where he earned every single nickel of his cheque

He’s like a first responder
The kind of work that we all ponder
But we’re also glad that someone’s able to
Do this kind of work
And never ever shirk
When a troubled soul needs attended to

You won’t see him at the fair
He won’t win a ribbon there
He will likely never be put in a show
But he’s found his place out here
Healing other horses fear
And it’s God’s intention for him, this I know

Of my heart he’s got a holt
He’s the bay that starts the c**ts
And I just can’t count the times he saved my hide
And to also have my trust
In his other role is a must
Cause he’s also taught my youngest girl to ride

Bridling Problems or an Unprepared Horse?
