Sadly our big seabuckthorn didn't survive the storm, but we were able to save the ripe fruit, so if you are a seabuck fan, we have you covered! I will have some fresh at the market and throughout rest will be frozen.

Good morning friends,
Fruit trees are one of the top attractants that bring wildlife into our neighbourhoods.
To eliminate human-wildlife conflict, we must work together to eliminate unnatural food sources.
How can you be a good neighbour?
1. prune your fruit trees so that it only produces the amount of fruit you can manage
2. utilize bear certified electric netting to protect your valuable resources such as fruit trees, bee hives, chickens
3. if you do not want any fruit – use your hose to spray blossoms off the tree in the spring
4. if you cannot harvest your trees this year call Groundswell’s Apple Rescue Program or the Fairmont Community Association and they will send volunteers out to help!
Let’s all work together to keep wildlife wild and our communities safe!

Keeping Wildlife Wild and Our Communities Safe!

Did you know Anna’s other job is to work with the community to keep wildlife out of our neighbourhoods? As your WildsafeBC Columbia Valley Coordinator and our Team Lead in Apple Rescue, Anna recommends using electric netting to keep the bears and deer out of your yard and neighbourhoods.

If bears and deer have nothing to feed on, they will be on their way to finding other, more natural food sources. If you would like to learn more about electric netting and how you can play a leadership role in your neighbourhood:

Contact Anna at [email protected] for more information.

Thanks also for Wildsight’s support!!!!

Let’s Not Feed the Wildlife! Let’s feed each other.

A big part of Groundswell’s Commitment to the Valley is running the Apple Rescue Program. This year Anna is back to help organize our volunteers to harvest as many trees as possible so that we don’t feed the wildlife we feed the community. If you would like to get involved, join our dedicated crew for a couple of hours – we would love to have you and we pay in apples!

Apple Rescue Program
Seeking Volunteers Fruit Pickers and Apple Tree Owners

WE LIVE IN BEAR COUNTRY!!!!
Bears are attracted into our community by apples and other fruit on trees, bushes as well as garbage.
Harvesting your trees and keeping your garbage secured will help keep hungry bears out of your backyard. Groundswell for the last 6 years has offered an Apple/Fruit picking service to the communities from Brisco to Fairmont. Got a fruit tree and want it picked or maybe you would like to Volunteer as a picker! Either way get in touch with Groundswell.

Volunteers:
Help our community by volunteering to harvest apples for folks who are unable to pick their own or are away. We pay in apples! Let us help keep Bears out of our communities, to keep us all safe! Join our incredible team of volunteers by contacting Anna at: [email protected]

Apple Tree Owner:
If you are an elder and unable to pick your fruit give us a call. If you will be away or are not equipped to pick you apples give us a call or maybe you just aren’t into picking your apples but want some help. The program is by donation.
Give us a call and we will help. Sign up for this fruit picking service with Anna at [email protected]

REMEMBER:
- the mandate of the Apple Rescue program is to keep our community safe & bear free!
- the benefit of this program is we can help feed the community
- domestic fruit is not a natural food source for bears
- we harvested 1.5 tonnes of fruit last year
- the program is by donation
- be a good neighbour, pick up the fallen fruit, use electric netting, harvest asap, or contact groundswell

A big thanks to the District of Invermere and Wildsight for their support of the Apple Rescue Program this year!!!

Good advice from Wild Safe BC!

Good advice from Wild Safe BC!

Good morning, friends. Fruit season is upon us. It is important that you pick up your fallen fruit a couple of times a day. Do not leave it for local wildlife.
• Wild animals such as deer belong in the wild. By feeding them your windfall, you are conditioning them to expect food from people. Wild animals that lose their natural tendency to avoid humans can become a significant threat.
• Deer attract predators such as coyotes and cougars. This increases safety concerns and risks to people and pets.
• Deer gathered at artificial food sources have a higher risk of transmitting diseases such as bovine tuberculosis, chronic wasting disease, brucellosis and parasites to one another.
• When you invite deer to dinner, they don't stop with your apples; they continue next door to enjoy your neighbours' flowers, trees, and shrubs.
Be a good neighbour, pick up your windfall daily and harvest your tree as soon as it ripens.
Lets all work together to keep wildlife wild and our communities safe!
