As a follow-up to the previous reel about the cue "Trade", check out this video of Sadie rocking the same cue but a distance. In this clip, Sadie is just about 100 feet away investing and tasting an old deer ribcage. Like Ranger, in the previous reel, Sadie has a long positive reinforcement history; in her case, she's been adventuring with me since she was six months old. She's an excellent example of setting up your dog for success for life by starting these skills early. While my slogan is Where Dogs Get To Be Dogs and they are free to express natural behaviour which does include foraging, there are times that it's not appropriate for the dogs to have something and I need to remove it. So what do I do? I trade. I always trade with something of higher value and I never take anything from the dogs using punishment or corrections; it's simply not needed. This behaviour, like most, is not an overnight behaviour. It needs to be built up like any other by using practice, gradually building distractions and difficulty. Some tips to get started: Start inside with low value items around the house Use a long line when transitioning to outdoors Always use something of higher value *Bonus tip, it doesn't have to be food. Misinformation is rampant on social media; downright lies in some cases. One of my biggest irks of misinformation is when people suggest that you cannot achieve a reliable off leash recall without a certain tool. There's this false narrative out there that the only way for dogs to safely enjoy off leash freedom is with the use of these tools. And there's even this misguided idea that certain breeds require these tools just because they are that breed. . Any breed can be taught off leash recall without the use of tools and corrections. In fact off leash recall should be taught without corrections; corrections can actually have the opposite effect on recall. Off leash recall success is not an overnight behaviour. It's a lot of work and there is a lot to consider but it can be done without relying on tools. Some major keys to success with off leash recall can inlcude: • Long line to start • Practice, practice, practice • Appropriately valued reinforcement • Consistency in reinforcement • Engagement with you • Opportunities to fulfill needs like sniffing • Appropriate locations It's important to also note that not all dogs should be or need to be off leash. It's a privilege and it carries responsibility.
