We are so fortunate to have a surgical referral clinic available in BC! Great post from Paton and Martin Veterinary Services about seasonal colic

Fall Colic Prevention for Horses:

Colic, at least anecdotally, seems to be more common during certain times of year. However, it’s not really the weather itself that is causing the colic. It is changes in the management and daily routines for our horses that can lead to an increased risk of impaction colic.

Some of the contributing factors are:

Forage changes (more hay, less grass)

Reduced turn-out (horses on pasture generally experience less colic incidents)

Hydration challenges in colder weather

Sometimes, no matter what we do, colic can occur.

If your regular veterinarian is called out to attend a colic and they determine that your horse is dehydrated, needs more intensive management or has severe signs that indicate surgery might be necessary, they will recommend a referral to the clinic.

At this point, acting quickly and having a plan in place will give your horse the best chance at recovery, whether it is a medical or a surgical colic.

We hope you don't need us but when you do, our hospital team will be ready to help your horse 24/7 365 days a year.

AS YOUR BELOVED HORSE AGES, SUBTLE CHANGES COULD SIGNAL SOMETHING MORE THAN JUST GETTING OLDER.

PPID (Cushing’s) is common in older horses, but identifying it early may help ensure a better quality of life for your aging horse.

Visit https://www.bicanadaequine.ca/ppid to find out if your horse is eligible for a FREE PPID TEST from Boehringer Ingelheim Canada.

While it’s a common equine emergency, esophageal obstruction (“choke”) can look alarming, especially if you've never seen it before. Unlike in human medicine, where choking refers to a tracheal (or windpipe) obstruction, choke in horses refers to an obstruction of the esophagus (the muscular tube that carries food from the mouth to the stomach).

Most commonly, choking occurs when horses eat concentrated feed too quickly without chewing appropriately, which results in a firm bolus lodged in the animal's esophagus. However, esophageal obstruction can also occur with hay or straw, hard treats, carrots, or nonfood objects. Poor dentition, which leads to inadequate chewing, is also a frequent cause of choke.

While common, choke can have serious consequences. So, be sure to call your veterinarian as soon as you notice signs of choke. A bad choke is fairly obvious to both veterinarians and horse owners, but a mild choke could be confused with an upper respiratory tract infection or colic.

Another successful trip to Haida Gwaii! This is truly a remote place and the horse owners do such a great job taking care of their horses and helping each other when needed.

A huge thank you to Haida Gwaii animal hospital and Stephanie for organizing the week!

See you again next year.

I had a great weekend at the Technical large animal emergency rescue (TLAER) course in Oliver.
Organized by ALERT alertcanada.org fire crew, veterinarians, and volunteers learned from THE authority on large animal rescue Dr Rebecca Husted. We learned about technical rescue such as extracting horses from wells, bridges and trailer accidents as well as fire safety in barn fires and wildfires.
Thank you, Rebecca, ALERT and Kevin Garecki

For a taste of what we learned about in relation to forest fire evacuations listen to this podcast Dr Husted did a few years ago,

Eye injuries are always an emergency!
We use yellow stain to better visualize a corneal ulcer. Can you see the blood vessels migrating across the eye in the picture? Blood vessel migration occurs at 1mm per day, so we know this ulcer is not new.
