Protect Your Dog from Spear Grass (Foxtail) This Summer!
As the weather warms up, we spend more time outside with our dogs , but summer also brings the hidden danger of spear grass, also known as foxtail.
What Is Spear Grass and Why Is It a Problem?
Spear grass is a dry grass seed with a sharp tip that clings to fur and moves only forward piercing the skin and migrating deeper into the body. This can lead to serious infections and abscesses.
Where It Hides:
Paw pads – causes limping or swelling.
Ears – may lead to infections or eardrum damage.
Nose/Eyes – causes irritation, discharge, or ulcers.
Mouth/Beard – dogs may accidentally push seeds deeper when licking or biting.
We’ve already treated 6 cases in June and 2 in July, ranging from ear infections to eye injuries and lameness.
How to Protect Your Dog:
Avoid tall, dry grass – stick to groomed parks or paved paths.
Check after walks – especially paws, ears, nose, eyes, armpits, and groin.
Keep fur trimmed – shorter coats make it easier to spot and remove seeds.
If your dog is limping, licking excessively, shaking their head, or showing swelling, contact us as soon as possible so we can help your furry friend feel more comfortable. Early detection is key to avoid any further injuries!
