GPS Guinea Pig Sanctuary, Kitchener Rescue and Rehoming of Guinea Pigs "Helping them find their way home." We screen our adopters and also follow up, to ensure the pigs are adjusting well.

GPS rescues, cares for, and rehomes guinea pigs when their owners are unable to any longer. Our goal is to offer a better option to kill shelters and also to prevent the wrong people from "adopting" them from online ads, simply to feed them to pet snakes, sell them to a lab, or sell them for their own profit. We remain available for questions and concerns, even after adoption, and require that if

the adoption isn't working out, that they are returned to the sanctuary in order to be rehomed again safely. Our goal is to find a loving forever home for the pigs to live out the rest of their natural lives with love and care.

Update on Honey:

Just when we thought she was doing well, the left eye has developed a hemorrhage! She is on pain management and continuing her eye drops, but the end result is likely that she will lose that eye! 😭

Before we can even think about surgery however, we need to do an x-ray to be sure of what's going on inside there. We don't want to put her through a surgery to remove the eye if it's an inoperable tumor and removing the eye wouldn't help her anyway. Likewise if it is a hidden infection, surgery could put her it further risk of spreading that infection.

The X-ray will cost over $300 as she has to be sedated during it. That's the first step then the surgery may be $800 to $1,000. An estimate is being drawn up and I will post when that's available.

Please consider donating to help save this sweet little baby! Throughout all the poking and prodding and eye drops she still remains happy and cuddly. She is only 6 months old and loves to give kisses. She has a lot of life and love left in her!

Donations can be sent direct to the vet by e-transfer at: [email protected] (message: for GPS/Honey). They will directly credit our account towards her future care.

Or, you can e-transfer to GPS at: [email protected]

In both cases, every cent goes directly to Honey's ongoing care.

Great news! Honey's eye condition is under control with the eye drops Dr Laura prescribed! It has been determined that it is genetic glaucoma, so there is no permanent fix. But ongoing eye drops will keep it in check!

Honey update:

Good news! The pressure in her left eye is back down to a respectable 18/19!
Bad news: now the pressure in her right eye is up to 35!
BUT that means these drops are working! So we are treating both eyes now and will recheck in 2 weeks.

Thank you to the anonymous donor that donated direct to our vet! It was a lovely surprise to find out that this visit was covered!

We still need to do an x-ray to rule out tumours or infection and that usually costs around $100-130. Each retest of eye pressure costs $75-100. We are SO grateful for your kind donations, as they are giving this little sweetie a fighting chance!

To donate to her ongoing care, you can e-transfer our vet at: [email protected] with the message "for Honey @ GPS". Or to our own vet fund at [email protected]

Here's hoping we can avoid surgery for this sweet young piggy!

Update on Honey, our baby with the bulging eye.

We tried some eye drops for a few days but tonight the vet found they aren't working. So she'll be adding a second type of drops tomorrow. On Saturday, we'll test again. But it's looking more and more likely that this 5 month old baby has a genetic version of glaucoma. Dr. Laura has yet to confirm via x-ray if it is an infection or mass pushing on her eye, but infection seems very unlikely as there is no discharge, temperature, loss of appetite etc. A mass would cause severe pain and there are also no signs of that.

Folks, if it is glaucoma, the only solution would be to remove both her eyes, since the other one would eventually be affected too. 😭 I am beyond gutted and hope there is still a chance to save her eyesight.

We could use some help to make that possible. Each time her eye pressure is tested, it costs $75-100. Her eye drops average $40 each and the x-ray will be $100-150. I haven't even allowed myself to worry about surgery costs, hoping it can be avoided. Any financial help is appreciated! Donations can be made by e-transfer to: [email protected] or direct to the vet at [email protected] (be sure to indicate that it's for Honey through GPS).

Thank you to all who have already made donations! Your generosity will give this sweet girl a fighting chance!
