This cold snap came in quick! To help my horse and mule to stay warm, they get a warm soupy mash twice a day, extra hay and bedding along with warm winter layers to ensure they are comfortable. The soupy mash ensures they stay hydrated to avoid Impaction colic (eek!) training horses are stalled for the weekend and will be hand walked so they stay out of the nasty wind.

Rio is one of my favourite client horses, and tonight we had a fantastic ride where a lot of things clicked for him. His owner works very hard to help condition him as he gets back into working shape and it shows with every ride. We had some tension that was impeding his ability to be soft previously, but today we were able to enter a more mature way of going and loping. He is mentally maturing to handle some more pressure and complex series of maneuvers.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again—you can’t get too proud of your horse.

If you’ve got a great horse underneath you, there’s a reason they became great. Just because things are going well doesn’t mean you can stop doing those things. It's a trap that I've fallen into before, and it can be hard to hold yourself accountable when all of a sudden your horse stops working.

Trust in yourself and your training, and keep yourself and your horse accountable. If you want more tips on how to get your brain out of the way when you're running barrels, this article from BarrelRacing.com breaks down some of the tips I use during the winter rodeos that can apply all year long. ➡ https://bit.ly/3vqhcHn.

For all of those people who are trying to enjoy life with a retired, injured, young or rehabbing horse- you don’t have to ride. Enjoy the grooming, feeding, hand walking, mane braiding and treat training. The small things get overlooked when we’re too focused on the big pictur, and your horse will work better for you if you spend some time on the little things.

Great advice for ALL disciplines.

Todays tip: “Think of the cost.”

When you’re making a run on a young horse and it isn’t going your way… think of the cost to keep pushing.

A lot of times what I see is professionals will ease up… we’ve already “lost the race.” The horse maybe didn’t handle the pressure. Time to go back to the drawing board. Because actually what most people want… is a long term horse.

What I see sometimes is a horse gets in a jam, gets behind and the rider just pushes. Instead of “we already lost the race” it’s “we have to make up time.” Kick. Pull. Whip. Spur.

What does that actually cost you? If they get a little scared, get discombobulated, or just are struggling mentally. Sometimes, this is totally the riders fault. I see it all the time.

So what does it cost? Months. Years. Endless hours putting back together. Small things can add up to something so quick. Money. Training. Vetting. More than you’ll ever know. So when faced with that crossroads, choose wisely.
