Hello neighbors! My name is Sam Van Dale, and I’m the proud owner of Kokiri Canines – formerly known as Happy Paws. I’m excited to (re)introduce myself and my pet care services to our local community!

With over 6 years of experience working with a wide variety of pets, including dogs, cats, birds, reptiles, and more, I offer a range of compassionate services designed to meet the unique needs of your furry, scaly, or feathered friends. I got to do a group walk for Tex, Gunner and Bruce. Tex and Bruce used to go to daycare together and were besties so they were SO excited to get to play together again.

Hey everyone! I had a run in with a pup that had escaped his house this morning and was thankfully able to get him home safe thanks to a recently updated microchip! I wanted to use this as an opportunity to share some information about microchips that not everyone knows.

1.) In a study published by the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), 22% of dogs were returned home, but 52% of microchipped dogs were returned to their owners. The difference is even greater in cats with one in 50 cats being returned and nearly two of five cats being returned when microchipped.

2.) A microchip does not automatically store your information, it only stores a microchip number. After getting your pet microchipped you have to register the microchip online with whichever company the microchip is from. If you need help with this process I'm more than happy to help!

3.) Microchips can and frequently do, migrate. It's a good idea to have your vet check your pets microchip in case it mirates and make sure to update your information frequently.

4.) Microchips tend to be recommended over tattooing as tattoos fade over time and can become illegible. Also an animal living on the streets for a significant amount of time could easily lose an ear (where the tattoo is usually located) to frostbite or other animals.

Please make sure to microchip your animals, especially if you have a cat living outside and update your information frequently! If your pet is already microchipped take this as a reminder to check that their information is up to date❤️

Yesterday I got to walk two new pups! Theo the chocolate lab and his new room mate Molly! They both did so good and had such an amazing time, Theo even got to dip his toes in the lake and watch some ducks.

I got to watch Hazel and her younger brother Apollo over Thanksgiving! They had such a blast going for walks and even got to see a deer which was SO fun

Spent a week with Axle the Anatolian Shepherd! He was a massive snuggle bug and gave me tons of kisses. Since he lives outside of town we got to star gaze as well. It was a wonderful time

I spent an awesome week with the dogs Izzy, Lucy and Emmy and their feline friends Bella and Shadow! We had so much fun going for walks, cuddling and playing. Emmy even got to spend a day at Paw Time Indoor Dog Park and Doggy Daycare, by the time she got home she was tuckered right out. What a lovely crew🥰

'Hi! Do you have treats?' - Maggie

Hunter finds his environment way more reinforcing than treats so he usually isn't super interested in me when we're on our walks. However he finds toys SUPER exciting and fun so I tried using a ball as reinforcement instead of treats. I'll admit using toys is pretty new to me but I'm very proud of how our walk went! I used a squeaky ball so when I noticed I was losing his focus but wanted him to focus on me (kids running past, dogs walking past etc) I could just squeak the ball and he'd immediately focus on me. It also gave Hunter some more exercise while he chased the ball, and gave him the opportunity to choose when he wanted to engage by bringing the ball to me or disengage by walking with the ball in his mouth
