🐾 Happy Canada Day from Southside Animal Clinic! 🐾

Today, we’re celebrating everything that makes our country—and our community—so special. From the beauty of the Great White North to the kindness of our pet-loving neighbours, we’re proud to call Canada home.

Here’s to wagging tails, purring hearts, and the incredible pets and people we get to care for every day. ❤️🍁

We’re so grateful to be part of such a strong, compassionate, and animal-loving country.

Have a safe and happy Canada Day!

Dogs have limited ability to sweat, so the effects of a warm vehicle are exacerbated for our canine friends. This means a dog can overheat and go into medical distress quickly - making a warm vehicle a potentially lethal environment, in a very short amount of time.

With the recent heatwave, extra precautions should be taken to keep your furry friends healthy and happy. Short muzzled breeds (such as persian cats and bulldogs) are more susceptible to the heat, as are senior or obese pets. Remember, even a short amount of time in the heat can be deadly - especially inside a vehicle!

Dogs are considered senior at age 7, and cats at age 10. Bi-annual exams become the preventative standard at this age, as opposed to once a year for younger pets. Catching disease processes early has a significant outcome on quality of life and prognosis ♥

Parasite prevention programs should be tailored to your cat, based on their lifestyle. Routine prevention includes empirically deworming kittens biweekly from 2-8 weeks of age, and then monthly until 6 months of age. For adult cats, f***l exams should be conducted once to twice a year. The risk to indoor cats is low, but not zero!

At Southside Animal Clinic, we are proud to be an official field placement for the VA program at Fanshawe, and employ three veterinary assistants of our own. Acting as the eyes, ears, and hands of veterinarians and technicians, they are responsible for a variety of tasks caring for our patients, people, and facilities. Please join us in thanking Alex, Athena, and Nelly for being such an integral part of our team!

Onion, garlic and chives are members of the allium species of vegetables. Allium species initially cause gastrointestinal irritation, which progresses to red blood cell destruction and anemia. Fresh, dried, and powdered forms are equally toxic, and while dogs are the most commonly affected, cats experience more profound effects. If you suspect your pet has ingested even a small amount, seek veterinary care immediately.
