Last week the Enderby location was thrilled to welcome a visit from Pandora, an Angora rabbit.

Angora rabbits are primarily bred for their coats, known as Angora wool. Caring for Angora rabbits requires dedicated, daily grooming to prevent painful matting, regular trimming or shearing, and a diet rich in hay to aid digestion and prevent hairballs. They also benefit from playtime and socialization outside of their enclosure, as Pandora is doing here.

We regularly stock a variety of rabbit pellets and hay, from trusted names such as Stoter Farm, and HiPro Trouw.

If you've got questions about feeding your rabbits, please reach out to us, we're always happy to answer your questions.

Have you notice your dog shedding more than their normal amount?

This is very normal during the fall months especially if you have a long haired or double coated dog.

During this time it is recommended that you increase the amount you groom your dog. For some that may still mean a weekly grooming session and for others it will mean daily grooming until the peak shedding is behind you.

We carry a wide range of grooming brushes for dogs and are confident that we will have something that will suit your needs.

You can shoot our range of grooming products and brushes in any of our three locations or anytime online.

Why do cats want to scratch surfaces and what can we do about it?

For cats scratching maintains healthy claws by helping to remove the outer layers, to stretch and strengthen muscles, and to mark their territory with both visual and scent signals, which helps them feel secure.

It's important to realize that scratching is a normal and necessary behaviour.

However, we can help save your furniture. Using a deterrent like No Stay Furniture Spray for Cats can help prevent your cat from scratching on furniture or in areas that are considered undesirable. It uses essential oils that cats find unappealing to encourage them to go elsewhere.

Meanwhile, we still need to provide our cats with a more appropriate outlet for their scratching needs. Having a few scratching options around your home is the first step.

Spend time near the scratcher encouraging your cat to interact with it. Play with the cat near it and incorporate it into your play. The most important step is to reward the cat every time they use the scratcher. Have yummy treats nearby and give one to the cat whenever you see them scratching at it.

While we covered moulting, and how it will affect your chickens last week, there is another important factor when it comes to why chickens stop laying in the fall.

As the days get shorter, and hens have less access to daylight, they will stop laying completely. This prevents any chicks from being hatched during the cold of winter.

If you prefer to keep your hens following their natural rhythms you can rest assured that as the days begin to get longer, usually in late winter to early spring, your hens should resume egg laying.

If you prefer to have your hens laying throughout the winter months, all you need to do is provide them with an artificial light source, such as a light bulb in the coop. Aim to mimic the summer's length of days, about 14-16 hours.

Today, September 30th, marks the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.

The day honours the children who never returned home and survivors of residential schools, as well as their families and communities. Public commemoration of the tragic and painful history and ongoing impacts of residential schools is a vital component of the reconciliation process.

Across the country, you can find open to public local activities and gatherings organized to commemorate the history and legacy of residential schools.

Find an event near you by following hashtag on social media, or on your local community websites or social media pages.

We are closed today to honour this solemn day and will reopen at 9 a.m. tomorrow.

As the days begin to shorten people will ask us why their chickens have stopped laying.

The answer can be multifaceted but one of the first things we wonder if is the chickens are moulting.

Chickens older than one year of age will moult every fall. While some birds lose their feathers slowly and uniformly, others will lose them quickly and look quite shabby. Likewise, some birds will moult quickly and efficiently and others will moult over several months.

Moulting is a natural process and requires a large amount of energy from the bird and egg laying will stop during the moulting process. Keeping your birds on a higher protein layer ration will help support them through their moulting period and resume laying as soon as possible.

Horses who have access to pasture space during the autumn months will reap the benefits of grazing, such as reduced stress, improved digestive health, and improved hoof circulation and growth. However, there are a few risks associated with autumn grazing that owners and caretakers need to be aware of.

Fall grazing requires caution due to the high sugar concentrations in the grasses, especially after a hard frost.

Using a grazing muzzle for horses who are at risk of lamanitis or colic will restrict grass intake and allow for longer turnout periods for socialization and exercise without the risk of overgrazing.
