The reproductive cycle of the mare is controlled by a series of hormones, influenced by daylight, that ebb and flow in sequence. Horses are seasonal breeders, usually cycling from late spring to early fall each year.

During the colder months of the year, when the days are shorter, mares will be in the anestrus, or non-cycling phase and the ovaries will be small; mares will not be fertile or capable of breeding during this period. As the days get longer in springtime, the ovaries become slightly larger and more active, then transition into the cycling phase due to signals they receive from the brain.

Depending on your mare you may start to see signs of her heat cycle beginning anytime over the next few months.

Signs may include: squatting, frequent urination, “winking”, squealing, and stallion like behaviour.

Chasteberry is an herbal supplement that is used to support mood balance and hormone health in female and male horses. Chasteberry is said to help make moody mares easier to handle and may have a calming effect on aggressive stallions or geldings.

Mad Barn’s Chasteberry Powder is made of pure dried chastetree berry fruit without any additional ingredients. It should be fed at a rate of 5-20 grams per day, increasing the serving size slowly to limit avoidance.

As we approach chick season we know that, for many of you who are expanding your flock, that doesn’t just mean chickens.

We’re often asked if we stock starter for birds other than chickens, and the answer is yes!

We regularly stock HiPro 22% Duck & Goose starter and Natural Harvest Non-GMO 26% Turkey starter.

We also carry Natural Harvest Non-GMO 23% Step 1 Pre-Starter Crumbles and this is the starter we recommend for other poultry types such as guinea fowl or quail.

These are of course in addition to the HiPro 22% Medicated Poultry Starter and HiPro 22% Non-Medicated Starter we carry for chicken chicks.

No matter who you’re inviting to your flock this year we’ve got the feed you need!

This time of year we often receive questions regarding how to treat lice on horses.

The answer depends on the variety of lice.

The sucking louse is found at the roots of the forelock and mane, around the base of the tail, and on the hairs just above the hoof. The biting louse prefers to lay its eggs on the finer hairs of the body. It is found on the sides of the neck, the flank, and the base of the tail.

Biting lice are most likely to be found on the sides of the neck, back, and the abdomen of the horse. In cases of heavy infestation they can be found everywhere on the horse’s body.

Lice are transmitted through direct contact with an infected host when an adult louse crawls from one horse to another. Lice can live for a few weeks off the host. Therefore, transmission can also occur by sharing infected grooming tools, blankets, tack, and other equipment or by rubbing against a shared fence post.

Treatment for biting lice is primarily by use of anti-parasitic medication applied to the skin and coat. These medications are often available in a shampoo, powder, or spray form and can be obtained from a vet.

Oral ivermectin or moxidectin has been an effective treatment against sucking lice but only against the adult form so it must be repeated as eggs and larvae mature.

Remember, lice are species specific and you will not be infected if you come into contact with a horse impacted by lice. However, you can pass them to another horse.

A recent Castanet article about a bobcat targeting chicken coops in Vernon highlights the importance of keeping our poultry safe from predators.

Whether you keep a handful of chickens, or a hundred, predator prevention is something that should be at the forefront of chicken welfare. Unfortunately, chickens will always be vulnerable to predators and it’s up to us to help keep them as safe as possible.

Ensuring that you have safe and secure fencing, closing your flock up at night, and daily collection of eggs are all great places to start when it comes to protecting your flock.

For more tips on keeping them safe we loved this article backyardpoultry.iamcountryside.com/coops/protecting-chickens-from-predators/

02/08/2025

Dog boots offer a wide range of benefits, especially if you have an active pup. Just like your own feet, your dog’s paws are soft and prone to injury, especially if you take them running, hiking, or spending time out in extreme weather. Boots help prevent paws from getting cut and from getting burns or frostbite.

Boots are also useful to have on hand as cuts and scrapes heal best when they are kept clean and dry. A paw with an injury will heal faster if your dog wears a boot on the affected foot. Talk to your vet to see if this would be appropriate.

During the cold winter months they protect from ice and snow. When salt and other de-icers are used to melt snow and ice, be aware that some of them can cause chemical burns on paw pads. (You also don’t want your dog licking these chemicals off once you’re back indoors.) Salt crystals can also be sharp and uncomfortable to walk on. Furthermore, if your dog has furry feet that collect ice and snow between the toes, she may be more comfortable wearing boots.

But boots aren’t just for active dogs. As dogs begin to age, they may begin to drag their feet as they walk, which can damage their paw pads, so you may be recommended to use boots for cushioning.

If you think that boots may be helpful for your dog come on down to either store. We’re stocked up on Gooeez dog boots in a wide range of sizes to best suit you and your dog.

Recently we’ve been asked if we carry the Kennel Blend and Nu-Way brands of pet food.

Yes!

Both our stores regularly stock both varieties of Kennel Blend dog food and Nu-Way cat food.

Kennel Blend and Kennel Blend Large Breed are formulated with poultry as the first ingredient. Whole grain brown rice and barley serve as nutritious grains to create a well rounded diet. Flaxseed, herring oil, and oatmeal have been added to help support a healthy skin and coat while chicory root and yeast extract provide probiotics for digestion.

Nu-Way’s delicious cat food recipe is formulated and produced right here in Canada. This cat food focuses on providing the essential nutrients for ideal energy. Vitamins, minerals, and protein levels help support your cat at any life stage. This diet also contains omega fatty acids and amino acids to support growth, along with skin and coat health.

02/05/2025

During this current cold snap you may be wondering if your horse is cold. Horses do not feel the cold in the same way as we do. With a natural coat, they can regulate their own and usually cope with cold temperatures.

That being said, there are some situations where we need to step in and offer assistance.

•Foals and seniors. These citizens are more vulnerable than others and will need assistance staying warm before others. Monitor them closely for any signs of chill.

•Clipped horses. Horses who have had any part of their natural winter coat removed via clipping should be blanketed.

•Horses without shelter. These horses will be more susceptible to a chill from the wind and/or any precipitation.

•Any other horse with a thin coat or who is cold sensitive. Monitor these horses for shivering or looking hunched/tucked up.

If you suspect that your horse is too cold come see us in either store to view our range of Canadian Horsewear blankets. With warm and waterproof options from mini sizes and up you can rest assured that we can help keep your horses warm this winter.

Water is oven overlooked during a cold snap such as this one but it is just as important now.

Water is a vital component to all aspects of animal health and should be offered 24/7. Water should be clean and free of slush or ice. Never rely on animals consuming snow to fulfill their hydration requirements.

We are fully stocked on all the heaters and deicers you may need to get all of your animals through this, and future, cold snaps.

This includes a range of different types of stock tank and bucket deicers, heated buckets, heated pet waters, and heated water founts for your poultry.

Oh Canada! Oh North Okanagan... Did you know....

For the past 20 plus years, way before T Rump, we have always tried to source our products from a) Canadian Distributors b) Canadian manufacturers that those distributors have and c) we look way through the supply chain to find those vendors that have the most Canadian ingredients (farm, pet or supplies) and inputs into their products?

We are VERY proud to say that we have over 95% of our products at the Rusty Spur from Canadian Distributors, Manufacterers and Ingredients - always have, always will. Most ingredients that supply up through our produts are NOT from the United States (for example, Lamb in our dog food is mostly from New Zealand).

And, check out our local prices compared to corporate chains (whether owned outside of Canada, outside of BC, or even those chains that are owned within BC corporately).

Our owners and staff run and own our business locally, we donate thousands of dollars to non-profits, sports organizations and teams and donate our own individual time in our community.

Can't say that about those that run, own or supply businesses from outside our awesome region of the North Okanagan.
