If you are able to catch the cat or cats yourself, or help arrange a trapper, and/or donate to initial vet costs, we may be able to bring the cat/s into our foster programme. If so, email [email protected] with LOCATION, a PHOTO if possible, and how you can contribute (catching, donation, etc.) People often contact us and say "I saw a stray cat - can you take it?" But there is no magic wand for this. We are a small group of unfunded and overwhelmed regular citizens. For every cat we have saved, there are 5,000 more in distress. Until the city robustly funds sterilisation programmes, this problem is too big. Buy a trap at Canadian Tire, take the cat to a vet for deworming and vaccination, do not mix with other cats until the vaccine reaches max capacity, try to socialise the cat, have it sterilised, find a screened home for it (do not give it away for free, because there are hoarders, warehousers, and nefarious people out there; charging a fee to recoup some of your vet costs also protects the cat from rash adopters, abusers, and those who won't be able to care for it long-term). We can talk you through the process or even find it a foster home for you if you meet us halfway. But this small handful of volunteers cannot magically just "come get" all the stray cats out there. This is a crisis, and it will take a village.

THE CAUSE 4 PAWS STORY (francais suit): Twenty years ago, our founder Ursula saw a colony of stray cats behind a restaurant. She learned that there was no-one to help them and so she gathered some friends and helped them herself and has been doing so out of pocket ever since. Cause 4 Paws has between 25 to 100 cats at foster homes throughout the greater Montreal area at any given time. We have a very low incidence of disease and of euthanasia (we only euthanise in the case of suffering with no hope of recovery, i.e. we are no-kill). All of our cats are immediately vaccinated for calici, panleuk, and rhino upon rescue, except in the case of nursing kittens, in which case they are placed in foster homes without other cats and where there has never been feline illness, and vaccinated when old enough. Foster homes that have their own cats must have those cats up to date on their basic vaccines. Cats that are "high-risk" or presenting symptoms are tested for F.I.V. and/or FelV, but we cannot afford to test all of our cats automatically unless symptoms present themselves. Vets sympathetic to our cause offer us discounts on vaccines, consultations, and medications, which helps us keep adoption fees lower. All cats in our rescue are sterilised. In the instance where a kitten is adopted before it is old enough to be sterilised, the adoption contract stipulates that we will arrange for its sterilisation when age-appropriate. When time allows, we can connect people with trappers and Trap-Neuter-Release-Maintain groups to help sterilise, vaccinate, and re-release unadoptable ferals. All of our cats, adopted and re-released, go through a course of deworming and anti-parasite treatments. Our adoption fee of $300 goes toward these and other veterinary treatments, but does not cover them fully. Donations from kind supporters are absolutely vital to our work. We ask for an optional higher adoption fee for pure-bred cats (such as those rescued from kitten mill operations) and for declawed cats (we do not endorse declawing, but we sometimes rescue abandoned cats in this condition). We are able to offer a small discount to those adopting more than one cat at a time. We are always warmly grateful to those willing to choose an older feline companion or one with special needs. Foster mom Augusta says: Paprika is great company. She loves to be around people. She greets you every morning with sweet cuddles. She likes being held, and pet (she doesn’t like being pet on her belly, however). She likes to interact and play. She has an adorable purr. She only scratches the cardboard cat scratcher provided for her and never any furniture. She’s clean, and always uses the litter box. Paprika is currently indoors, but tries to run out when the door is opened so the door needs to be carefully watched. She is vocal and likes to interact. She can also be a bit unpredictable; she can show you she’s unhappy with a surface bite and scratch—more so to communicate “stop” rather than to hurt, especially if someone touches her too close to her BELLY or if (like many kitties) she feels overstimulated after some time being pet. Paprika is a wonderful companion. She’s energetic but also loves calm naps. She definitely loves people and greets everyone who comes in for a visit. This is not a cat who will hide, but who will rather approach visitors with an open and friendly demeanour.

Adoption fee of $300 includes sterilisation, vaccination, deworming, and anti-flea treatment. Proceeds go immediately to ongoing rescue efforts.

Lilo and Stitch FLEW TO NEWFOUNDLAND recently because an adopter from there fell in love with them. After many confusing travel logistics, the only way they could get there in the end was by flying cargo! Of course, this had their foster mom Devina in tears worrying about their journey.

Well, it sure looks like they are none the worse for wear and living in the lap of luxury, together forever! What a happy ending. Two new Newf Floofs!

☀️Medea's story: Meet Medea, the enchanting young cat who’s ready to find her forever home! This sweet girl arrived shortly after being separated from her kittens, and while she was initially shy and skittish, her foster mum Clara has been tirelessly working on her socialization. Medea has made incredible progress and is blossoming into a delightful companion. Though she’s not yet a lap cat, Medea has the potential to become one with a bit more time and love. She loves to sleep during the day and transforms into your little shadow in the evening, following you around the house with curiosity and charm. Medea enjoys being part of the action and, while she’s still warming up to being petted, she can be easily won over with some tasty treats. 🙆🏻🙆🏻ADOPTED: GUS!

We are delighted to say that Gus was adopted ... by his loving foster mom Juliana. This is the very very best outcome possible for an FIV cat because 1) he is clearly VERY HAPPY with her and 2) FIV kitties should avoid disruptions because their immune system does much better with stability and a feeling of safety. We are THRILLED for this outcome. Foster fails are the absolute best.

Nous sommes ravis d'annoncer que Gus a été adopté... par sa mère d'acceuil bien-aimée, Juliana. C'est le meilleur résultat possible pour un chat FIV car 1) il est clairement TRÈS HEUREUX avec elle et 2) les chats FIV devraient éviter les perturbations car leur système immunitaire fonctionne bien mieux avec stabilité et sentiment de sécurité. Nous sommes ravis de ce résultat. Les sont les meilleurs.

🍋Lulu's foster mom Rohanna says: Lulu is a playful and precocious kitten with the softest fur. She spent the first few months of her life outdoors so had to adapt to the indoor life. But now that she is used to cuddling on the couch with her humans, there is no going back. Lulu has a great appetite and always wants to know what her humans are eating. She loves playing with other cats and can hold her own when wrestling with her brother who is bigger than she is. She loves belly rubs and will purr incessantly as long as she gets pets. She also doesn't mind playing by herself with the various toys scattered around the house. Lulu could be happy as an only cat or with another another friendly cat

🎷Duke's foster dad Kevin says: These kittens were brought to me during the jazz fest and therefore have all been named after jazz musicians. When they first came in they were very scared and skeptical of humans, but they have come a long way. Duke, who was caught a couple of weeks after his siblings, has done an amazing job of warming up. He loves having his cheeks and neck scratched and is never far behind his siblings when the toys come out. I am sure as he gets more exposure to humans he will continue to become more affectionate and comfortable.

🎷Dizzy's foster dad Kevin says: These kittens were brought to me during the jazz fest and therefore have all been named after jazz musicians. When they first came in they were very scared and skeptical of humans, but they have come a long way. Dizzy is very playful and curious, with large thumbs that he is still growing into. Whenever she hears a toy she will come running to chase it. She loves exploring every corner of her environment, or hanging out by the window to see what is going on outside.

Our summer Pet Photo Contest has ended, and we raised $6,000. That is a PHENOMENAL amount of money for a tiny unfunded volunteer rescue, and it came in the nick of time for some emergency vet bills!

Kira was adopted from Cause 4 Paws a couple of years ago. She was the happiest kitten, living with her human Helene ( @laneyishere ) and his feline friend Roumi. However, she was recently diagnosed with a serious but curable disease. Read the full story here 🔽🔽🔽 "My name is Helene and I live in Canada. My 2 cats (Kira and Roumi) are very important to me and they are a part of my family. My Kira is a 2 year old female cat. In October 2023, she developed hepatic lipidosis, a curable liver disease. Kira was at the vet hospital for 24 hours at the beginning of the month, which cost me $3000 CAD for all the tests, hospital stay, medications and diagnosis. On October 12th, I had to take her back to the hospital because she wasn't eating. I'm devastated. She is currently at the veterinary hospital, and my bill is getting close to $11 000 CAD before taxes just for this second stay. She is getting better. This is not overtreatment as there is a good chance she will heal. But I need your help to cover these costs and the follow-ups. Every little bit helps. Urgent donations needed for Kuma (medical bills) Kitten Kuma is a non-stop purr-machine and full of love ... but she has never had the use of the back part of her body. We have spent over 500$ so far on diagnostics and meds, and vets believe the problem is congenital and neurological. It seems Kuma cannot be cured. She doesn't have control over her pee and poop, so her poor foster parents are just constantly cleaning as they don't want to restrain her in case the exercise helps her. And she needs ointment for the sores she gets on her behind. (As you can see in the video, she gets around quite speedily using her strong front paws and her claws!!) We urgently need donations to help with her existing and future vet bills. If she reaches a point where vets feel she is suffering, we will request humane euthanasia rather than have her linger on in pain. We will need donations in that case as well. Update on our "sad news" fundraiser. (To those who have donated, thank you so much. <3 ) We still need to raise the remainder of about a thousand dollars in vet bills from two litters of kittens from a backyard colony in Ste.-Dorothée. They arrived with so many problems. Two kittens sadly had to be euthanised as there was no hope. :( Happily, their mother and other ferals from that backyard have now been sterilised, so no more kittens will be born into overcrowded and dangerous conditions. Many other kittens in the rescue are already (or will soon be) fully healthy and ready for adoptive homes, but only after costly care for treatable problems like conjunctivitis, ringworm, and rhino - all too common in outdoor colonies. Please help us out with this unexpectedly big bill. (Adoption fees don't begin to be able to cover the costs of rescue.) Please e-transfer funds to [email protected] ...
