My dogs know their place.

Every year, I hope the people spewing nonsense about being pack leader, about being the alpha, about how you need to show the dog who’s boss, will disappear. Every year I’m hopeful that they will pick up a book (that isn’t written in their little echo chamber), do a course worth its salt, or even just watch the most basic YouTube video explaining why they are wrong.

Every year I am hopeful that I won’t see any more dogs wearing prong collars, e-collars, being strung up on a slip lead, being yanked back, alpha rolled, pinned to the ground, shaken, prodded, hissed at, kicked. Dogs that are just babies, dogs that are traumatised, dogs with behavioural problems that, whenever they ask for help or reassurance, are punished. Dogs that are petrified of something scary, only to be told “Stop crying!” as the thing they’re phobic of is drawn closer and closer to them.

Every year, I’m disappointed.

It’s 2022. The basis of this training was debunked DECADES ago. Why do people still feel it’s acceptable to treat dogs this way? To lazily slap the word “dominant” or “stubborn” on their foreheads and take that as an excuse to now treat them however they like.

Do freaking better.

“Oh, but my dog is a German shepherd/ Rottweiler/ staffie and they need a strong hand”

No. If you are incapable of handling a powerful dog without beating the crap out of it and walking it with ligatures, sometimes spiked ligatures, constricting their throat, seriously consider getting a smaller breed. It doesn’t make you look like a tough man, walking an incapacitated large breed dog, it makes you look like a coward. Nothing screams “I’m an incompetent trainer” like somebody reliant on choking their dog just to get them to walk nicely.

One day, we will look back as a society on the people who treat their dogs like this, and be totally repulsed. We will think “how did they get away with it?” I hoped, by 2022, we would be at that point already. But clearly not.

Yeah, my dogs know their place. It’s right beside me.

TLDR: you’re not the alpha, you’re insecure.

This industry is sooo unregulated. Please, please always do your research, ask for certifications, ask for references, ask what methods are being used. If you are ever in doubt, or unsure of a trainer, find someone else. Do not ever feel bad to pull out from a program or away from a trainer if you feel uneasy about anything.

Grooming can be a frightening experience for dogs, but it doesn't have to be.

Our spa focuses on desensitizing dogs to common stimuli found in grooming environments. Desensitization is the process of introducing a dog to new stimuli by working slowly and at the dogs pace. This allows your dog to safely adjust to something he may not have been comfortable with before.

This experience is designed to stimulate your dog mentally, physically and intellectually. Between grooming exercises, we allow our pups to socialize in a controlled environment. This adds to the spa benefit of promoting mental wellbeing. Consistent stimulation helps reduce destructive habits and promote better behaviour.

Some of our current services include:

🌸 Nail clipping
🌸 Desensitization to nail clippers and dremel
🌸 Fur maintenance and matting prevention
🌸 Dental hygiene
🌸 Socialization and stimulation
🌸 Bath and blow dry (coming soon)
🌸 Desensitization to grooming table, bathtub and blow drier.
🌸 Touching ears, paws and tail
🌸 Puppy grooming introduction

👉 We do not currently provide cuts and trims. We intend to offer this service in the near future once we have a certified behavioural groomer. This is an uncommon and new approach, so limited people are qualified.

We are fear free certified and use force free methods with a background rooted in a scientific approach to pet care.

We are located at 6244 Sherbrooke Street West and our launch date is set for Monday, January 17.

Every dog in our care must undergo an evaluation. Evaluations are completely free of charge and are for the safety of our dogs and staff.

Imagine… our expectations for a new puppy are absolutely unreal.

This statement doesn’t fit the norm of what society tells us, but giving closeness and comfort while transitioning your puppy will help them, and you.

If you prefer your dog doesn’t sleep on the bed then you must work on crate training during the day. But rushing it those first nights will only be problematic.

[ID: text reads: Co-sleep with your puppy when they come home. Imagine being taken from everything you know and then expected to sleep in a crate… alone. How terrifying. Co-sleeping will help your puppy transition while you crate train (if you decide to), there are no all or nothing rules.]

We’ll be honest: the situation is Lebanon is not good. After last years devastating explosion at the port, our rescue partner became overwhelmed with dogs needing emergency medical care. The situation only got worse from there: Lebanon’s ongoing economic crisis led to thousands of dogs being dumped and abandoned by their owners. Sometimes they are dropped off at BETA’s shelter, but mostly they are left tied to trees, locked in abandoned apartments or simply set free on the streets to fend for themselves.

Just when we all thought we had seen the worst, BETA was dealt 2 more devastating blows: the fuel shortage and the CDCs ban on importing dogs to over 100 countries including USA. With no gas and no power vet visits and rescues became impossible, and the dogs who were able to get out of the country were now unable to travel due to the CDC putting bans in place to countries where many dogs were previously adopted to.

We couldn’t stand by when so many dogs are in desperate need of our help, and so today Team RAD is flying to Beirut, Lebanon to bring back 25 dogs from BETA to their new lives in Canada. Our rescue parter from rescue in California will also be flying to Lebanon to bring dogs back for RAD, as dogs can’t travel to the United States at the moment due to the CDC ban.

We’ll just say it: we are in desperate need of funds to bring these dogs back. We have 25 spots reserved on 3 flights but currently don’t have enough funds to fill them with dogs. We couldn’t do the work we do without the support of our RAD community and we’re asking for your help to save these dogs. Any amount helps- even 5$ gets us closed to our fundraising goal.

So RAD fam, please donate if you can, share this post with your friends and family and help us bring these 25 dogs home!

PLEASE READ:

and .j.thayer made the news!

The borough has stated that the keeping and training of animals is only permitted in commercial zones.

As our clients know, we are NOT a training facility. While we enforce basic obedience with positive reinforcement, all of our training occurs with outside of business hours and outside of the daycare.

We also do not "Keep" dogs as a kennel would. They are only temporarily present throughout the day.

We have still received no answer about why another daycare only one street over is allowed in the neighbourhood. We follow the same business model and are NOT a 24/7 business.

We were never actually asked by the inspector to detail our services. The city stating that the "keeping and training of animals in this zone" is not permitted differs from the initial issue we were told.

There are so many inconsistencies in what the city is saying. Our daycare should be the exception. The borough needs to show more support for small businesses and exercise better treatment.

On Tuesday, we are beginning the legal process with issuing the city with a formal notice. To our amazing scouts family, thank you for all your love and support. The fight is not over yet.

Thank you to everyone who showed up to support NDGs #1 daycare 🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾 ...
