The DIY cake! You can make it too!
I just had a request for a cake that is safe for pancreatitis. It isn't my first request, and it won't be my last. We had a lovely brief conversation about why I don't make condition specific cakes & how she can make her own!
Pancreatitis is a volatile painful condition when aggravated, some dogs are very well managed, and some are very sensitive to even minute changes, for me, safety is paramount, and the intricacies of Pancreatitis just simply make it a condition I do not cater too. I'm not qualified to make those decisions on behalf of an unknown dog.
Many of you know Icarus, and my cancer boy, he was on a very strict diet for a long time, but, he still needed a cake. If you have a dog on a very specific diet, you CAN DIY one! Your dog doesn't care if its pretty, or picture perfect, they don't care if there's only 1 extra item they like.
For diet specific dogs, I always recommend taking their regular food, put it in a food processor or blender and grind it up. From that you can add liquids like wet food, bone broth, vegetable stock, or simply water until you get the consistency of wet sand. You can add in safe items, for some that's specific treats, or fruits like blueberries & strawberries, veggies like carrots or squash work for many as well.

Once you have that wet sand consistency, put some parchment paper on a cookie sheet and simply pack the mixture into the cookie cutter. You can freeze it like I did for easy layering, or you can just run a thin knife inside of the cutter until the cake comes loose.
Non fat plain Greek yogurt can make a nice drizzle, or you can mix it with a non fat cream cheese to make it thicker for an icing. Throw on some fruit, treats, or even just crumbled kibble.
You've all seen my dogs cakes, I like pretty too, and I want that extra special cake for my dogs, but sometimes we simply don't have that option, and those dogs still deserve an extra special birthday moment.
