t’s a little too early in the season, but get ready to hear a scary story 😳

Have you ever heard of a North American Lung Fluke? (Paragonimus kellicotti)

Ya, me either. It’s considered rare, except if you live near the Great Lakes. It infects the lungs of dogs (and cats) after preying on crayfish or animals that prey on crayfish.
Once inside your pet, the flukes migrate from the intestines to pretty much everywhere 😱 They can enter the brain, spinal cord, etc but they are aiming for the lungs so they can reproduce. Once inside the lungs, the flukes form cysts in the lung tissue and produce eggs which your pet then coughs up, where the eggs reenter the water supply and the cycle completes.

Are you ready for the scary part?

There is currently NO PREVENTATIVE ON THE MARKET to stop these parasites from entering your pet. Nope, not oral pills, topical or even basic dewormer kills them! While not contagious between pets, any pet that likes to eat dead things near the shoreline of Lake Ontario is at risk. The only way to discover the parasites is for your pet to show symptoms once severely infected (cough) or during a routine f***l 💩 test done by your vet. Thankfully, once diagnosed, the parasites can be treated but it is a two week course of medication and may need to be repeated. The horrifying part is that left untreated, and if the pet is repeatedly infected, severe damage can happen to the lungs and other organs, which could be fatal.

Sega is a sneaky dog who values gross things. I test annually. She must have encountered this at the local park on the river. Perhaps a dead mouse, frog or even crayfish. Grateful that she is ok now, and we learned valuable lessons from this that I wanted to share with you.

Regular f***l testing and bloodwork can catch issues early, keeping your pet healthy and at their best! Please enquire with your vet about testing your pet. It’s fairly cheap and easy to do. Also don’t let your dog or cat eat dead stuff!! 🤢

After much demand, I have decided to start walks back up again, starting with my exclusive Walk and Train program. Priority will be given to existing clients but there will be spots opening up for new clients also. Walks will start up Sept 14 and will be running four days a week in Napanee only (for now). Spaces limited! Registration opens the last week of August, more details coming soon. So excited to be back!

🐾 Meet Freyja, one of the many puppies enrolled in our puppy program! 🐾

Each program is custom designed to your pups specific needs. All programs include basic obedience training and additionally, any behavioural issues you may have will be addressed in a way that most benefits your pup’s development. Freyja is a very shy puppy, so our focus has been on building her self esteem and her interest in humans BEFORE we addressed her naughty puppy behaviours. This was very important for us to consider so as to maintain her confidence with humans going forward. Trust is everything!

A one size fits all approach is not always appropriate for dog training as every aspect of a dogs personality must be considered before choosing your training style. I strongly believe in the old saying, “Work the dog in front of you” because not all dogs are the same! ☺️ I offer a wide range of techniques and information to ensure you find what works best for you and your dog

We learned some expensive lessons this weekend!

I always said that ecollar training was necessary for Sam in the woods due to wildlife and his prey drive. Friday night, I learned how important it is to wear the collar even for just a quick potty break 😔 While he did eventually call off the porcupine, the damage was already done. 150 quills in his face, chest and paw, including in the joint

Im thankful I keep a first aid kit in the car and was able to sedate him right away. Thankfully I had friends close by to help

Sam trusts me very much and let me get the most dangerous quills out before we headed to the vet for help. After a huge vet bill and some stitches, I thought I would share some of the important things I learned from this experience

💥 Emergency vets in the area are short staffed and finding an open clinic can be difficult, you may have to travel to Toronto. Keep a list of Emerg Vets (address and phone numbers) in case you have to call around. This is very hard to do when under stress so do it ahead of time

💥 Insurance is a god send. Knowing there was no limits to his care was a good feeling and they paid 1/3 of my bill. Now that deductible is met, all his aftercare is covered also, including if he needs surgery to retrieve more quills 😖

💥 Keep your first aid kit stocked and check it often. I had sedatives, but no pliers and my muzzle didn’t fit. A flashlight would have been handy. You can bet it’s fully stocked now 😉

💥 USE YOUR TOOLS! Long line, ecollar, lifejacket - Whatever you use for safety to control your dog should always be mandatory for every outing, even for quick potty breaks

💥 Train your dog with handling and restraint, even if you think it’s not necessary. Sam has always hated his nails and I’ve worked really hard with him to let me do uncomfortable things to him in exchange for food. This saved my butt with the porcupine because he allowed me to pull out quills from his face and chest in exchange for hotdogs using the same drill

💥 Porcupines quills can migrate through the body and cause a lot of damages. They also smell really gross!

Sega and I will be offering a “Learn to swim” drop in workshop on Friday June 14th in the Beaver Lake area for a cost of $30🐶 💦 🌊

This is a wonderful opportunity for dogs to learn to swim from each other, receive instruction from a trainer and for handlers to get experience motivating their dogs to like swimming!

Lifejackets, motivators and instruction will be provided all afternoon starting at Noon until four. All dogs welcome, puppies encouraged 💕

Registration phone assessment required as well as UTD vaccines (DHPP and Rabies)

Jack is back! His mom decided to enroll him for a couple more weeks of boarding school to continue to his offleash skills. We are also working on handling/petting, his stay command and hoping to teach him to swim. His obedience is already so strong, I can’t wait to see what else I can teach him. Heads up! Kennel cough is making its way around Kingston again. This strain seems to be a very sneezy one so don’t immediately assume allergies and take precautions if your dog socializes with others 🙂 Kennel cough is not dangerous but is highly contagious (and annoying)

Please note that I will now require all dogs who visit my home for board and train to abstain from daycare and dog parks for three weeks (21 days) prior to their stay. Unfortunately, vaccines aren’t always effective to prevent transmission and I have to be careful given my dog’s extracurricular activities 🙂

Group class Vs Private training, how does it work?

With a multitude of training options for your furry friend, it can be really hard for the new dog owner to understand how the industry works and what the best choice is for their journey. These days, every penny counts so it’s important to ensure you invest in the right training for your dog!

To help simplify it, group classes are run by an instructor and offer broad spectrum information to a group whereas private lessons are taught by a trainer and provide more insight and attention for your specific dog or issue. Both have pros and cons as well as a place in your dogs training journey.

Group classes are more cost effective and provide opportunities to meet other dogs and people (which can be good or bad thing depending on your dogs temperament). They are fantastic for proofing and maintenance work on dogs who are already trained and can offer basic, broad spectrum advice for dogs of all ages. However, they aren’t always the best choice for dogs who need specific guidance on behavioural issues.

Private lessons can be more expensive (particularly if the trainer is experienced and having to travel to meet you) but usually provide more in-depth instruction and can provide specific solutions to difficult behavioural quirks or problems. A training course specific to your dogs needs usually pays off huge as it will teach you exactly how to handle your dogs reactions to people/places/things, which allows you to reach your goals faster!
