Are you focusing on the wrong things when you train your dog?

Many times when I arrive at a clients house for the first time, I’m presented with a long list of things they don’t want their dog to do.

“I don’t want him to bark”
“I don’t want her to jump on guests”
“I don’t want them to run out the front door”
“I don’t want him to mouth my hands when I pet him”

But what if this is the wrong focus?

Usually I will ask the client what they WANT their dog to do in these scenarios and I get a confused look 🤔

Spoiler alert… if you aren’t sure what you want the dog to do in these situations, then your dog has zero clue how to succeed!

Training starts by identifying what skills the dog needs to navigate the situations that it’s struggling with. It’s our job to teach those skills. The majority of dogs will do the right thing if they are clear about what that is, no dog is trying to be “bad” on purpose.

This is what real dog training looks like. Science broken down in a way the handler can understand, by a trainer who has an actual education. This isn’t rehearsed rhetoric or forced ideology, it’s real world dog training. The outcome? Happy clients, happy dogs and lasting results.

Honestly, even I’m impressed how quickly Griffen took to his crate. He wasn’t forced, he wasn’t punished, he chose his crate. This is a dog who was desperate for guidance, not medication. He had the type of separation anxiety many would deem as a “severe behavioural issue” and the only solution being offered was drugs and gimmicks that didn’t work. In reality, he just has drive and needed a trainer who could guide his family to help him. His future is looking so bright and I’m so proud of him and his humans.

Another review that brings a smile to my face 🥹

After spending almost ten years in Kingston, I’ve worked with a lot of livestock guardian dogs. Their defensive temperament can be a bit overwhelming, and their territoriality is legendary. That’s what makes them great at their job! Understanding the breeds genetic instincts is key to being successful with training them. These guys are really beautiful dogs and love their family but require proper training to be safe around strangers. Really proud of Toby’s owners for having an open mind and putting in the work. Super proud of Toby too for making such a big turn around!! 🥰🥰🥰
