Happy Friday!
Struggling with your dog to pay attention to you while you’re in a public place?
Over excited, overwhelmed dogs will struggle paying attention when there too many distractions so this fun little game brings them back to focus on you and help them settle.
Asking for a “hop up” on anything a rock, stump, bench will bring the focus back on you and you can play this over and over until focus is regained.
I found this stump in a field and it worked perfectly. We had used this stump at the beginning of the walk and Sprocket did great… this video was on the way back and he was a bit tired 🥱
Have fun with your hop ups!
Does your dog race to the kitchen when they hear something hit the floor?
For safety reasons I have taught my dogs to leave it when things drop. Moto was very bad for diving at any items that hit the floors and as you can imagine it can be dangerous if medication falls out of your hand or anything that they are not to have.
You can easily teach a dog that “stuff” is yours until you allow them to have it. There’s a few steps involved in this but this can be the result.

I’m writing this post as PSA, and maybe I’ve talked about this before, I just wanted to remind people about walking your dogs in a public place ON LEASH! Sprocket and I just had a bad experience in Victoria Park, Charlottetown so I wanted to just explain why is so important to respect other dogs and give them space.
I had to come to town early this morning so I decided to bring Sprocket with me and go for a walk in a public space which we never get to do because I always have Slicks as well and she can’t handle these kind of situations.
I parked and immediately as soon as I get out of the truck a man walking an obese Border Collie was walking towards us - the dog was off leash. So I walked off the trail and into the grass to avoid them- but the Border Collie has eyes on us and starts trotting straight at us- I call out to the man “call your dog please” Sprocket is pretty good with dogs but my reading this dogs body language I knew there was going to be an issues. Its head was down, he was staring at us and trotting and not to mention we had just got out of the truck and Sprocket was excited.
So the guy- does nothing, so I said again in a more angry voice “call your dog” he then whistles but of course the dog ignores him and keeps coming at us. Sprocket starts to whine and bark- I’m trying to turn and avoid but the dogs runs straight up and starts growling. At that point the man comes to finally deal with the dog but then I notice the dog doesn’t even have a collar on so he can’t even grab him.
I said a few choice words (my inner grandpa Walker came out of me) and the guy says “what’s the big deal he’s just trying to socialize” 😡🙄😳
I say to him first of all your dog should be leashed in a public space, second if your can’t recall your dog they shouldn’t be off leash.
I didn’t say this but third not all dogs can handle a dog running up to them. (Sprocket and I are definitely out of practice and that is on me) but we don’t need an in counter like this.
We continued our walk and shook off the episode. We passed by 4 other dogs and Sprocket was a super star ⭐️
So just a reminder- please please please if your walking your dog off leash, not all dogs are able to handle a dog running at them- if you want to run your dog off leash then go somewhere like a dog park or a bush trail a public park is not the place unless you have perfect recall and if your dog doesn’t recall and at LEAST put a collar on so you can grab your dog! 🙄
I’m late posting this but I wanted to say Congratulations to Rubble’s family for putting in the hard work to graduate from The Teen Training Puppy Program.
Rubble is a great dog, he came from SPCA and just needed to learn his foundational skills.
We did his final exam at the ball park and there was people, dogs and balls everywhere- he got his skills done like a champ!
Congratulations you guys! Thank you so much for choosing us at Moto-Vated Dog Training 🐕❤️

Our morning Dog hike. Post up pictures of your walks!
I’m posting up again because last I posted I had some interest but then things fell through so… I’m still looking to follow along on your dogs journey if you’re switching your dog from a kibble diet to a raw diet.
I’m currently enrolled and have completed the theory portion of Holistic Carnivore Nutrition Course and to get my certification I need 3 dogs to write case studies on and that means I’ll follow along on with you and your dogs journey for 3 months. I can help guiding you through the transition from a kibble to a raw diet.
I will need to be communicating with you throughout the 3 months. Discussing history of your dog and then over time having conversations about what improvements your are seeing. I will also need to have specific picture updates as well throughout the 3 months.
If you’ve been thinking about doing a switch and would like a little guidance- and wouldn’t mind helping me out completing this course please shoot me a DM and we can talk about it. I’m not charging any money for this at all- (food and costs of switching are yours) I’ll just be there to observe and help if I can.

Sprocket’s round - as you can see he caught on pretty quickly.
As promised I am posting up day 3 of nail scratch board.
The proper way to teach this is to teach the to dig. However Slicks doesn’t get it - so I got her standing on a flat board - once she got that I started elevating it. She walks on it instead of scratching… but it’s an improvement over yesterday where she just sniffed for treats and uses her nose. She did get one scratch in the so small improvement from yesterday. As you can see I’m rolling the treat down the board because this is getting a wee bit of a scrape when she gets down. I’m definitely no expert at this- we are learning as we go because she’s such a hard case and really takes her a bit to get things.
This video was quite long I cut it down as it was a lot of her just walking around sniffing.

Sprocket has been perfecting his bounce catch… when I get a good throw in, he likes to catch it after it hits the ground! Who else has a dog that likes to play fetch? We play with “the toy” most everyday. Sprocket loves it… Slicks well Slicks will run after the ball but she’s not a fan of bringing it back. She mostly just likes to run with her toy in her mouth. So she does her. Fetch engages so many skills and impulse control… Sprocket is still a work in progress with skills like staying until I give him a release- especially if I throw something at him or over him… if I throw it away from him he can keep himself in check. This fetch play is straight after I got home from work so was more of just a fun game then a training session. Asking more from your dog while you play is so much fun. You can teach so many skills while playing a game like fetch. Drop it, sit before the throw, bring it, find it (Sprocket will often have to go find his toy before we begin play) you can teach to only run on a release command, and stop while on route to the toy. Lots of things to build on. Have fun playing with your dogs it’s fun for everyone! #wheatleyriverdogtraining #dogtraining #cometrainwithuspei #motovateddogtraining #dogtoys #Dogs #pei #peidogtrainer

Homework time!!!! I was working today with Slicks on her “Place” and “Break” commands. As you can see she’s doing ok- except she’s still pretty sniffy after the break. I am also trying to keep her from jumping up to grab the treat- this is an ongoing problem I have had with her and I think it’s been part of her starvation/food aggression issues- she’s desperate to get that food. I delay rewarding her until she has all 4 paws on the ground. I also delay giving her the treat because she is snappy taking the treat- so I don’t release the treat until she licks- hence my hand staying put when I’m rewarding her. Work in progress…. But she’s getting much quicker! motovateddogtraining.com #motovateddogtraining #place/break #dogtraining

I didn’t video this last week- but Mai (Husky) had her first playtime last week. Was extremely shy, nervous and tail between her leg, barking at all the puppies. Today she came out of her shell and played! Well done Mai! This is a reminder to get your puppies socialized- it’s so important for their confidence building and social skills! #motovateddogtraining #puppysocialization #motospuppyplaytime #duncanpuppytraining
