Comparaison between adult and baby iguana delicatissima.

Also called Lesser Antillean iguana this critically endangered species once occupied most islands from Anguilla to Martinique in the eastern West Indies.
Estimated population is about 20.000 with 10-15.000 of those on Dominica.
The total population has declined 75%, due to habitat destruction, hunting, introduction of exotic predators and competitors, and hybridization with green iguanas.

As you can see they are born with a green coloration and when they get older they get a grey color with a white/pink head.
Iguana delicatissima is easy to distinguish from iguana iguana thanks to its coloration but also because they are smaller and they don't have subtympanic scale.
The Latin adjectives delicatus meaning "delightful" and the superlative -issimus meaning "very," are the roots of this name because this iguana has been eaten for many years.
