Before we clip on the leash and head out the door, it helps to pause for just a second — and check our dog’s energy gauge.

Have they been snoozing all day while you worked? Or are they bouncing off the walls, ready to take on the world? That starting energy level makes a big difference in how your walk goes.

💤 A low-energy dog might need a quick play session or a few sniffy minutes to warm up.

⚡️ A high-energy dog might benefit from a few calm behaviours — hand targets, focus games, or a short settle break — before you head out.

When we start walks with our dogs in the right headspace, we set everyone up for success — calmer leash manners, better focus, and more connection.

In dog sports we spend so much time teaching precision that it’s easy to forget — those same skills can make everyday life easier too!

Here’s a demo for loose leash walking training where we repurpose hand targets for obedience training to teach a super practical skill: helping your dog move smoothly from one side to the other.

Whether you walk your dog on the left or right, there are times you’ll need to switch sides — on walks, in tight spaces, or even in the ring.

Use your “magic wand” hand target, or your platform work, to make that side change effortless and fun.

Take a break from drilling and try something new with a skill your dog already knows — it’s a great way to keep training fresh for both of you!

Make a good citizen out of your dog 🐾

We’ll focus on essential skills such as polite greetings, loose-leash walking, settling calmly around distractions, building confidence in new environments, and responding reliably to basic cues.

These are the same core exercises required for therapy work and CGC testing, but they also prepare your dog to handle the real-world challenges of daily life with grace and confidence. Beyond everyday manners, this training creates a solid stepping stone toward dog sports and other advanced activities, ensuring your dog can stay focused, engaged, and cooperative no matter the setting.

By the end of this course, you’ll have the tools to:

🐾 Prepare for the Canine Good Citizen or Therapy Dog evaluation

🐾 Build reliability in distracting environments

🐾 Foster calm, confident behavior at home and in public

🐾 Lay the groundwork for future training goals or dog sports
