Lisa Vicaire grew her small farm into Algonquin Acres, where youth in Timiskaming First Nation can try horseback riding and reap the benefits of horse therapy.
Her love of horses goes back to her teenage years, but it was teaching her daughter to ride that inspired this path.
Her daughter Sophia has Spinocerebellar Ataxia Type 5, a rare genetic disorder that impacts muscle strength and coordination. Riding in her special saddle has made a huge difference.
“It has helped her core and her balance in ways that I never thought possible,” Lisa told Rosanna. “And the fact that I was able to provide that to her has been the most amazing thing as a mother.”
“I think the freedom she feels when she’s on a horse is something she really cherishes. Her face just lights up.”
