We are in CRISIS MODE! Every shelter and rescue in the United States including ours is currently over populated with Huskies.
35% of our current population is Huskies! Huskies are currently the 2nd most common breed in shelters and rescues! We are currently taking in a Husky a day!
Pictured below is our amazing family of Huskies! We did not even have enough help to be able to picture all of them!

We are asking our community why? Why are these beautiful dogs being left at shelters for months on end? Why can't we find homes for them? Are they doomed to live out their lives in a kennel?

We often see people buying husky pups and knowing so very little knowledge of the breed and ultimately needing to rehome them due to behaviors. Here are five things you should consider being adopting or buying a Husky for your family-

1. Endless Energy
Bred as sled dogs, Huskies aren't the kind of pet that'll be happy snoozing all day on the couch. They have the energy to burn, and if they're not given the right outlet, they'll find their own way to get the vigorous exercise and stimulation they need.

2. Skills Like Houdini
High-energy paired with an impressive intellect means Huskies are skilled escape artists. They have a natural instinct to roam and explore, and an average fence won't be enough to stop them.

3. Fur-Flavored Everything
Nearly all dog owners have to deal with shedding, but Huskies take it to another level. They're built for cold climates, and they have both an undercoat and topcoat with what's known as a double coat. Huskies usually "blow" their coats in the spring and fall. This means the undercoat sheds excessively as the new topcoat grows in.

4. Independent Spirit
There's no doubting that Huskies can be loyal and loving to their owners, but their independent nature holds them back from being the lovable lap-dogs many people want. They're notorious as a stubborn breed of dog, and they'd much rather do things their way than obediently abide by house rules.

5. Climate Concerns
Huskies do best in cold weather. They're originally from the Arctic, and their fluffy coats, paws, ears, and even eyes are all examples of physical adaptions that make them perfectly suited to cold temperatures. You don't need to live in the North Pole to own a Husky, but climate should still be a concern.

And of course not all Huskies are the same! With time and training a Husky can do well in any environment!

What can we do? Spay/Neuter, Adopt, or Volunteer.
It is going to take everyone in our community to help manage this crisis.

REACTIVITY MISUNDERSTOOD
Reactive dogs are often misunderstood. A dog that is reacting to a situation is not trying to be difficult, they are having a difficult time coping with that particular situation and are trying their best to make the scary thing go away.
Reactivity is generally triggered by the emotion of fear. The fear of whatever is scaring them, a fear of a valuable possession being taken away or a fear of a strange person or animal coming into their territory. Anxiety, stress, over excitement, over stimulation, feeling overwhelmed, trigger stacking, or a dog that is tired, in pain or even has chronic itching will often feel irritable and may be reactive in certain situations. If their reactivity is successful in making the scary thing go away, it becomes a rewarding behaviour because it’s something that works for them and it makes them feel better.
It’s not easy to be the owner of a reactive dog. One of my dogs is reactive and I know first-hand how dogs like this can leave you feeling embarrassed, ashamed, angry or frustrated. Why do they have to be so difficult, why can’t they just behave normally? Everyone is looking at me, judging me, thinking that I’m a bad owner, have no training skills, can’t control my dog or have a vicious dog that shouldn’t be taken out in public.
As hard as it may be, we need to take the focus off how we as owners feel about their reactivity and focus on how our dogs are feeling and what is causing their reaction. Whatever it is, it’s not something our dogs can overcome on their own and we need to take steps to help them cope. Reactive dogs need compassion, understanding, management, force free, positive reinforcement interventions and decompression – (a return to a normal, more relaxed state after a period of intense stress, psychological pressure, or urgent activity). These techniques take time and patience but are so important in helping our dogs to feel safe and learn more acceptable ways of coping.
I have learnt through many mistakes, to recognise what triggers my reactive dog and take steps to either avoid those situations, provide enough distance, or provide her with an alternative choice where she feels safe and in control of her environment. There will always be unexpected triggers around the next corner that are not within our control, but doing all we can to manage these triggers has immeasurable benefits.

We have confirmed that the recall on Costco Canada Dog Advent Calendars is legit. If you have a calendar, stop feeding treats immediately!

UPDATE: To those posting that their local Costco tells them differently, or are checking the US site (they sold a different product) we were told that notification to local warehouses is in the process of happening. We are sharing information that has been given to us through Costco.ca's customer service. We strongly suggest even if you have doubts about the legitimacy of this post to err on the side of caution and stop feeding the treats.

Calendars can be returned to Costco for refund.

URGENT HELP NEEDED

We all know that sometimes life hands us some pretty big challenges. Unfortunately, I now have a new challenge of my own. Many of you already know that I run Ralphy’s Retreat mostly on my own, with the help of a dedicated handful of volunteers. As one of Ontario’s largest sanctuaries, that’s already a challenge on any day. But if you take me out of the equation, it becomes impossible.

Later this month I will have to step back from the day to day running of the sanctuary for a while. With the large number of animals we currently care for, and the lack of help, it will be impossible to meet their needs.

The good news is that we’re not closing. But it’s clear that we need to take this time to regroup and make sure that the needs of the Ralphy’s animals are met. Right now, that means finding them safe placement.

HOW YOU CAN HELP

With all of this in mind, the best thing we can do is quickly find loving homes for many of our adoptable pigs. If you have a hobby farm and can assist us, please reach out to me (Kara) at [email protected]. This is an urgent situation, so please help us if you can.

We are also looking for committed volunteers to assist with daily chores/feedings, and we need our donors more than ever for our permanent residents.

Thank you for your continued support at this difficult time.

BEFORE YOU GET A DOG - READ THIS! ... and then think long and hard about how you will adjust your life to include your new addition ...
Dogs need exercise and to keep their minds busy.

“I am a Dobermann, cataloged one of the most intelligent and most feared dogs, I have served the US Navy and I will not narrate my dark past on the German side. They called me the devil's dog, today they ask me to behave like a Poodle, they have gone so far as to wear clothes ...

I am a Malinois:
Gifted among dogs, I shine in all disciplines and I am always ready to work. Today they ask me to relax on the couch all day.

I am an Akita Inu:
My ancestors have been selected to fight with other dogs. Today they ask me to be tolerant of my peers, and they blame me for my reactivity when one of them approaches me.

I am a Beagle:
When I followed my prey, I gave a voice so that the hunters could follow me. I was leading the dance.
Today they put a bark collar on me to silence me, and they want me to return to the call in a snap of fingers.

I am a Yorkshire Terrier:
I was a rat catcher, fearsome in the English mines. Today they think that I can't use my legs and they always hold me in their arms.

I am a Labrador Retriever:
My vision of happiness is a dip in a pond to bring my master the duck he just shot. Today we forget that I am a sports dog, I am fat and I have to babysit the children.

I am a Jack Russell Terrier:
I am capable of facing a fox larger than me in its own den. Today they blame me for my damn character and want to turn me into a parlor dog.

I am a Siberian husky:
I got to know the great spaces of northern Russia, where I could pull sledges at impressive speed. Today I only have the walls of the garden on my horizon, and my only occupation is the holes I dig in the ground.

I am a Border Collie:
I am cut out to work eight hours a day, and I am an incomparable artist of herd labor. Today they blame me because in the absence of sheep, I try to control bicycles, cars, children from home, and everything that is in motion.

I am...
I'm a 19th century dog

I am handsome, I am alert, I am obedient, I can put up with being in a purse ... but I am also an individual who needs to express his instincts, and I am not suitable for the sedentary life that you want me to carry.

Spending eight hours a day alone on the patio, seeing you a little at night when you come back, and being entitled to any activity just a short walk to the bathroom will make me deeply unhappy.

I'll express it by barking all day, turning your garden into a minefield, relieving myself on the inside, being unmanageable the few times I'll find myself on the outside, and sometimes spending my days on my cushion, then you'll think I'm happy to To be able to enjoy all this comfort while you go to work: in reality I will be in full depression, because it is not the preference of the human, but also that of the dog of the XXI century.

If you like me, if you dream of me forever, if my beautiful blue eyes or my athlete look make you want to possess me, but you can't give me a real life of a full dog, a life that is really worth living, and if not you can offer me the job my genes claim ... then quit me.
If you like my rhythm but are not ready to accept my character traits from rigorous genetic selection, and you think you can change them with your only good will ... then quit me.

I'm a 19th century dog, yes. But, deep there, the one who fought, the one who hunted, the one who pulled sleds, the one who led a herd still sleeps. And sooner or later, you will wake up. For better or worse.”
