Whew well that was a night! Our beautiful ‘Quality’ delivered her filly…. Backwards. She started fussing in first stage labour about 10:30pm last night, and around 1am, her water broke. I always position check to make sure we have two feet and a nose - as the sooner you have information if there is a problem (dystocia), the better your chances at getting the foal out of there alive. When I palpated this one, I could only feel feet. No head. As I reached in further, I could feel hocks😬.

Time is of serious concern with this presentation. The hind limbs of the foal present first and the mare’s continued contractions can cause the placenta to separate, which can result in asphyxiation of the foal. If the foal is able to be delivered alive, the umbilical cord also may have unknowingly been compromised, resulting in a variety of possible complications, including broken ribs or delayed hypoxia due to brain swelling that can lead to a dummy foal, seizures, etc.

We quickly moved Quality to an outside grass pen so we had more space to assist her. I placed the pulling chains on the foals legs, and with one of us at her head, and two pulling, we managed to get the foal out very smoothly and quickly. That moment between clearing the birth canal and taking a first breath is always unnerving… but the foal didn’t miss a beat! A quick check under the tail determined it was a filly - and a strong red determined filly she is!

Assessing Quality’s colostrum on the refractometer showed it to be of poor quality after dripping for several days, so we began thawing some from our colostrum bank in the freezer. Capriole and Braecrest Brandy saved the day with their donations of liquid gold!

The filly had a good suckle reflex and took 500ml over three initial bottle feedings. She’ll need a bit of time to unfold, but she is strong and vibrant. She was on her feet in no time, and so so chatty ❤️ too cute.

Quality passed her placenta within 30min, and so far is doing very well. We will monitor these two even closer over the next week to be sure they are well on their way to recovering from this difficult birth.

A huge thank you to Lisa, Mom and neighbour Ryan for all the support last night. So so for a successful outcome in what could have been a fatal situation.

We are a warmblood breeding 🐴 and young horse education facility just outside of Barrie, in Oro Medonte. With foaling and breeding season well underway and a busy training schedule, we are looking for someone to join our stellar team. 💪🏻

The job duties include but are not limited to:
• Feeding, turnout/in, blanketing
• Routine barn cleaning duties
• Basic facility maintenance
• Holding horses for vet and farrier
• Grooming
• Administering basic first aid and leg wrapping
• Administering oral medications
• Operating skidsteer/tractor for putting out hay in paddocks

We are more than happy to train and help develop your equine skillsets, but the successful candidate must have:

March West FF, bred by Fieldstone Farm in Orangeville, Ontario, is one of the most breath-taking two year olds we've ever laid eyes on. With three fabulous gaits (...that canter!!! 😍), remarkable natural technique and style in the jump chute, and the sweetest, kindest disposition, this is a once in a lifetime kind of horse.

Excited to be at Rose Valley Farms this Saturday to chat all things ‘Young Horses’! We’ll be going over the basics in preparing your horse for showing on the line - from body conditioning/feed tips, to introducing and fitting bridles, to grooming tips for the perfect show-ring finish!
The afternoon will be filled with discussing ground work principles and methods, stress management exercises for the developing horse (though they’re never to old for this!) and demos. This is a great clinic for anyone wanting to learn how to have a better connection with their horse, learn basics in body language, stress signals, some super feed and management tips, and how to feel confident that you and your horse have the foundations and confidence to handle new experiences, shows, off farm trips, etc.

We are also doing a FUNDRAISER raffle for the collaborative - who provide holistic and practical solutions, education and awareness for mustangs navigating our domestic world. There will be some exciting high end equestrian products to win in the raffle…. It’s a win win supporting a great cause, and getting some superb product!

With breeding season fast approaching, we are looking for someone to join our team at Braecrest. Part time position, with possibility of full time. We all share weekend shifts on a rotation, so some weekend availability is a must. The ideal candidate needs to have basic skillsets in horse handling (youngstock and stallion experience ideal), know their way around a barn, be very reliable, motivated, have great attention to detail, and thrive in a team atmosphere. We are willing to train those who have the right work ethic and values though! We have many fabulous learning opportunities to offer, both equestrian focused and in personal growth.

The position includes, but is not limited to:

Feeding, blanketing, turnout, mucking, general barn cleaning and facility maintenance, holding horses for vet and farrier, grooming, and basic first aid treatments. Experience with operating ATVs, skidsteers and tractors is always a bonus. We are happy to help you develop your skillsets in top quality equine management, breeding operations, equine first aid, and horsemanship.

Life is not yesterday or tomorrow; it is only right now. Horses are the window for me to find that magical place, and I am so grateful for how that enriches my days. It takes conscious effort to pause and find that place - and if you do, I can guarantee your mood, life, and sense of fulfillment will only prosper.

I am grateful for another incredible year at Braecrest. And I am incredibly grateful to our amazing staff who tirelessly dedicate their time to caring for the Braecrest horses to such a high standard and to seeing and believing in the magic the horses bring to our lives.
