Exposure therapy is not only great for humans but also for horses!

Sparky is a unique fella that if in the wrong hands, he could be one of those horses that could be ruined quickly. When we first got him in 2022 he had a hard time being able to work through feelings of anxiety. Often it resulted in trying to leave stage left and being real sparky.

Over the course of the last few years, he has become a new pony with consistent exposure and acceptance therapy techniques that I utilize in human therapy that I have customized the concepts to work in a way that a horse’s brain would understand.

Last night we used some Tuck Tape on something and the sound of it caused quite the negative reaction in him. However, a few years ago if I approached him with such a thing his rationale brain would be so checked out that it would be purely flight mode and we would not be able to make any productive progress.

Last night’s endeavours lasted about 10mins of work for him to accept… this.

I see many owners shy away from horses when they get scared or are resistant. In reality this results in feeding the monster as I call it.

By working with them on not just the item they are scared of and the whole concept of managing anxiety and self esteem, you create a solid reliable partner. ❤️

Ever feel like you’re being judged… You never know when you’re being watched 👀🐓

The hens finally made it to the Chicken Palace for the rest of the winter. However, they got to spend New Year’s Eve partying under the stars. There’s not too many years were we are blessed with such good weather!

Summer will be here again in a blink!

Isn’t there a saying ‘Don’t cry over frozen eggs?’

The chickens sure take that quote very seriously.

With the cold snaps we sometimes miss getting the eggs before they freeze even when we go out 3 times a day to collect. Today we had 3 frozen eggs where the shells cracked.

Into a chicken omelette they go!

We make high fat and high protein omelettes for the chickens on these cold days to help give their systems all they need to keep warm and to continue to make the amazing eggs they do.

In tonight’s omelette there’s scrambled egg, egg shell, whole organic grains, grape seed oil, cranberries and cooked beef tongue (chickens are omnivores! True story!).

When it’s -28 tomorrow morning, they’ll be more than happy to have a warm breakfast. ☺️

As the sun sets and the biggest moon of the year rises, the big pack of coyotes across from the farm are greeting Mr.Moon with chants of excitement.

This morning we observe a man and his new rental toy in their natural habitat.

Off to the other chicken tractor. This is what we call a Broody Hen. She kicks all the other hens off so she can sit on all the eggs to hatch them. Little does she know that we don’t have a rooster to make those eggs hatch… We always know when we have a broody hen because you will walk out and it’ll look like a chicken was attacked with feathers everywhere! In reality, they pluck their feathers out themselves to have direct contact with the eggs to keep them warm. You then go check the nesting boxes and find a Raptor from another world. 🐦‍🔥 You can break the broodiness with certain methods which we can post about later! Stay tuned!

We packed up the pony limo and was off to the Trans Can trail where we got in a nice 10km ride. Clooney decided that he’s making his own entertainment today. He nabbed the cones from under the fence in the riding ring. Riding footing couldn’t come soon enough for his brain!

With the extreme amount of drifting, doing field work with the tractor is really difficult. We have had to abandon one of the hay wagons we were doing bush work with. The only thing is… we had a bunch of chains on the wagon that had to come in. Solution: Downgrade from 64 horse power to 1 horse power. Hank thoroughly enjoys being a ranch pony and saved us from having to hand walk all the heavy chains all the way back from the lower field. This is an example of how you sometimes need to get a bit creative to get the job done.
