A huge shout out to our vet, Dr. Jon Waito, of Miller Vet in Chatsworth, for coming out to speak with our 4H Horse Club! We learned a lot, but the most fascinating part was that the horse's cecum sounds like a toilet flushing when it empties! How cool is that?!

Baler twine bits, every self-respecting horse person knows these little bits of twine end up everywhere! Pockets, the feeders, the washing machine, in your socks or down your shirt. Little things, but they can be incredibly annoying! A dear friend and I were discussing how the "little bits" in everyday life can be incredibly annoying too. And it's often the little bits that end up causing the biggest reactions! I have learned that the little bits we overreact to are telling us that we are in a big state of overwhelm. When the littlest things are causing us to react in an unhealthy way, or a way that we wouldn't normally if we weren't already in a state of stress, it's probably a good idea to borrow a trait from our equine friends. Stay mindful. Stay present. Being mindful brings awareness to your thoughts, feelings, and surroundings. And helps you examine what's going on in your life that's causing you to overreact. Remember to take care of yourself, because you matter, too.

All of our horses are special in there own way, but Rio holds a special place in many hearts. He is our golden boy. Our "Mr. Hollywood". Our official greeter when someone new comes to visit. He is goofy and silly and a beautiful soul. Some say we chose our horses. I believe that they choose us.

On January 25th, we hosted an amazing group of ladies, from our local church. We talked about what Equine Facilitated Development is and how taking a "Leap of Faith" led to the building of this ranch, and our desire to help others in our community. Thank you for a fabulous evening ladies! I hope you enjoyed it as much as I did. And thank you to Molly, Belle, and Rio for always being your amazing equine selves!

Our little guy Paddy is experiencing Winter Laminitis is a circulatory condition that causes sore hooves in horses exposed to cold temperatures. Horses and ponies affected by winter laminitis have impaired circulation within their hooves, leading to pain and inflammation in the laminae.

So we bring him in and wrap his legs in wool socks and fleece wraps to keep them warm. He is also on the Mad Barn supplement, Jiaogulan, which helps with circulation. At Pura Vida we try our best to honor our horses with choices. Paddy thought he wanted to go back to the paddock with the other horses but then decided he would rather stay in for the night. I think he was very happy with his choice!
