Rural Reptiles

Rural Reptiles Rural Reptiles, a reptile rescue that stands unwavering in its commitment to rescue, rehabilitate, and re-home reptiles in need.

https://www.ruralreptiles.ca
(website still a work in progress) Rural Reptiles was started in late 2023 by reptile enthusiast and hobbyist, and Herpetologist Shae West. The idea for a rescue came about due to the lack of rescue and rehabilitation services for exotic animals in and around the more rural towns and cities of Southern Ontario. Rural Reptiles provides a temporary home for reptiles need

ing to be surrendered, medical care and rehabilitation. Veterinary wellness exams and ongoing care is provided until the animals are given a clean bill of health. In rare cases, an animal with severe or chronic problems will remain with Rural Reptiles indefinitely.

West has experience working with reptiles who have metabolic bone disease (MBD), parasites, burns, infections, severe malnutrition and reproductive issues.

Rehabilitating a reptile can take quite a while depending on the severity of their condition. Animals will only be listed for adoption once they're deemed healthy. In some instances, an animal may have a lifelong condition or disability but will not be barred from adoption. For these reptiles, a clear disclaimer of their health status will be posted next to their listing.

Rural Reptiles will always be as transparent as possible on the wellbeing of rehabilitated reptiles. This is important not only for the integrity of Rural Reptiles, but for the ongoing care of the animals you may be interested in adopting.

There are so many keepers that have reptiles that are not aware of where the species is naturally native to. Some may think it’s not important; however, we believe it is.

Understanding where these animals are native to, will allow you to understand how to set up a naturalistic enclosure for them, which is the least we can do as pet owners. Knowing their terrain and geographical range, daytime and night time ambient temperatures and surface basking temperature in the WILD, even an idea as far as uv index. For example terrestrial rainforest species (that live below tree canopies) will not get high uv; vs arboreal tropical species, such as the green iguana where they bask up high above the canopies, get more sun and require higher uv. Knowing the geographical area can also help as far as what type of live plants to use, if you choose to try or use real plants. There is so much beneficial information on where these animals naturally live that will help you or guide you to a point, with understanding your reptiles NEEDS, not what we want, but what they NEED.

Other information could be diet, knowing their range can tell you what they normally would eat. Here is one example; Savannah monitors mainly eat insects and snails in the wild as the bulk of their diet. Do they eat other things? Of course, they are also opportunistic feeders. But the majority for your typical Savannah monitor is insects and whole snails. We must remember to replicate as best as we can. They depend on us. Too many keepers feed them rodents or raw meat. Sure the occasional treat of such is fine. Mortality rates in captivity is outstanding because so many keepers want what is easy or convenient for them; this includes how they set up their enclosures.

We have discussed in the past regarding substrate. Reptile carpet (even washed in the washing machine, unless you are using a biological cleaner) is not good and will still harbour bacteria, and get nails stuck. tile is not good: they are too smooth for one thing and are hard on your reptiles joints, paper towels offer nothing to your reptile (however excellent to use for quarantine). Proper substrate will help retain heat, humidity if needed, stimulation and enrichment through digging/burrowing, and allow them to live naturally while also giving traction of course while also allowing Gravid females to be able to pick places to lay their eggs. Are the above easier to clean? For us yes, is that worth sacrificing your pets needs?

If you haven’t yet and don’t know; we suggest to start researching where your animals naturally live. This will give you a much better idea on overall husbandry which is vital for long term physical and mental health. Yes, reptiles require mental stimulation as well within their enclosure. There is so much potential, and it’s fun to set up natural enclosures. Please give them that much instead of bare bone tanks and racks.

Below is a picture of a yellow Nigerian uromastyx in its natural habitat in the wild. (We do not own this photo).

Meet our newest edition, Arya 🥰 She's almost 4yrs, is still nervous of new people at first, but she's well on her way to being a snuggle bug.

She looks eerily similar to Sansa, hence her name 💚 She just come out of quarantine, but I would like to get her a bit more comfortable with handling before sending her off to her forever family.

However, if you are interested in having a meet and greet with her, we're taking applications for her adoption now.
