As someone who has a pond full of surrendered sliders, please read ππ
π«π’ Why You Wonβt See Red-Eared Sliders At Our Reptile Expos Anymore π’π«
If youβve been to reptile expos before, youβve probably seen Red-Eared Sliders β those cute little turtles that fit in the palm of your hand. But starting April 1st, theyβll no longer be available for sale at our events [color morphs excluded] β and hereβs why:
π They Get BIG β Red-Eared Sliders might start small, but they can grow up to 12 inches long and require large tanks or ponds to thrive.
π Abandonment is a Major Issue β Many people buy them without realizing the long-term commitment. When they outgrow their tanks, too many are released into the wild β where they become invasive species, harming local ecosystems and outcompeting native turtles.
π They Live a LONG Time β These turtles can live 20-40 years with proper care. Theyβre not a short-term pet!
π Welfare Comes First β Banning their sale at expos helps reduce impulse buying and protects both the turtles and the environment.
π’β¨ Education is key! If youβre thinking about adding a reptile to your family, make sure youβre ready for the responsibility β and always do your research.
