Almost 7 weeks with Bruno 🐾 this guy gets a LOT of compliments when out in public for being well mannered so I thought I’d share my non-negotiables for bringing a new puppy into our household.

-No on leash greetings with dogs. This can very easily turn into leash reactivity from the expectation of saying hi to everyone! The same goes for allowing people to pet him while on leash.

-Skipping the harness. I only use harnesses for exercise such as biking, hiking, slatmills, etc. When dealing with large dogs you lose any control on a harness and I think leash pressure is an essential tool to communicate with your dog. Therefore we’re opting for a wide flat collar while he’s young so he’s used to leash pressure and communication through the leash.

-No dog parks/daycare. While some daycares can be structured (I know of one great one). I value prioritizing neutrality over interacting with random dogs. I also think daycare can be an easy way to end up with an overstimulated dog that struggles to settle.

-Focusing on exposure over “socialization”. A lot of people struggle with socialization and end up either over or under socializing. The first months of your puppies life are very important. We are exposing him to lots of different things while working on staying engaged with us around any distractions.

-Crate training!! Great for nap time and helping with independence. He has started putting himself down in his crate when tired which is great to see at 15 weeks old.

-LOTS of one on one time. This is very essential in multiple dog households and often skipped. I want my dogs to be focused on me over their housemates.

Bo made sure to stay warm by curling up in the snow! He hates coming inside when it’s this cold out. His double coat keeps him nice and toasty even in these elements.

Proofing your training is really important and so is having friends to practice with. Who your dog hangs out with can influence them and their behaviour. Well trained dogs are built and take a lot of practice in different environments and exposure to different dogs, humans, etc.

What does your dog need to be successful in their recall? Consistency, accountability, engagement and impulse control. Using a long line helps keep accountability. When I got Bo, he would try to bolt and even backed out of his collar every chance he got. Now he can recall off of distractions. For Lark, we’re using game based training and then pairing our command with the mini educator to help keep accountability. When you have a dog that was not properly exercised or enriched for years, recall can be difficult. She finds the outside world very motivating and lacks impulse control in general. She also struggles to follow commands and finds working stressful as she was allowed to do whatever she wanted for so many years. Here’s to creating a reliable recall!

How fun! We checked out Sallys Play Centre, I love that they have private rentals. Bo tested out the agility equipment, although he found the weave poles tricky haha! The pups loved it.

Two dogs at different stages of muzzle conditioning. Why muzzle condition? You never know when your dog might get hurt and need an emergency vet visit. Sometimes grooming visits can be stressful. Maybe your dog plays too rough or struggles with proper socialization. They can also help both dogs and owners feel more confident in stressful situations. It’s better to have your dog conditioned and never need to use it than be in a situation where you don’t have time for proper desensitization. #muzzleddogsaregooddogs

Spent some quality time with my own pups today. Bo did some confidence work, impulse control and place sends over food. Focused on having fun with Lucy and working on engagement. 🤗

Furgo Tried something new! Just in time for this cold weather. Both my pups have been on a slat mill before but Bo really surprised me! He was keeping up a good pace. Lucy needs a bit more motivation (food) but ran as well. If any of my clients are interested in trying this, reach out to the page/check out their website.

Why train recall? So on those cold days you can find a secluded place and just let the dogs run without worry or stress. 🙌🏻🙌🏻
