Hearing “It’s okay, they’re friendly!” as a strange dog runs at you full speed.
Addressing the frustration that many people feel when other dog owners disregard others' safety and comfort in public spaces. The phrase "It's okay, they're friendly" can often be dismissive of others' concerns, especially when leash laws are in place for good reasons.
Leash laws are not just about control—they help protect all dogs, people, kids. Including those with fearful or aggressive dogs. Exercising your dog safely and considerately means being aware of others and using proper tools, like a longline or a leash, to ensure your dog doesn’t create an unintended risk.
How you can practice responsible ownership—practicing recall around distractions prior to allowing your dog off leash. Using a longline, and considering training tools like an e-collar if needed—are all great ways to ensure that you can keep your dog safe, happy, and well-behaved while respecting others.

Also in the New Year I will be obtaining my level 1 and 2 dog training certification from Method K9. Therefore effective immediately, we will no longer be taking booking’s for boarding or sitting services. Any confirmed future bookings will still be honored. What does your dog need to be successful in their recall? Consistency, accountability, engagement and impulse control. Using a long line helps keep accountability. When I got Bo, he would try to bolt and even backed out of his collar every chance he got. Now he can recall off of distractions.

For Lark, we’re using game based training and then pairing our command with the mini educator to help keep accountability. When you have a dog that was not properly exercised or enriched for years, recall can be difficult. She finds the outside world very motivating and lacks impulse control in general. She also struggles to follow commands and finds working stressful as she was allowed to do whatever she wanted for so many years. Here’s to creating a reliable recall!

What does reactivity mean to you? Some see reactivity as a bad word or struggle to admit their dog is reactive. Reactivity can mean a lot of things. Dogs that get too excited by triggers. Dogs that are fearful. Dogs that are overly stressed. Your dog pulling you to say hi to others or barking out of excitement when they see dogs/people is reactivity. Both these dogs love people and struggle to stay calm when in busy settings. Today they worked on their engagement and leash skills in public. 🐾

Another reason to keep your dogs up to date!! Especially if they are attending dog parks, boarding or daycare facilities. With the warmer weather unfortunately we are seeing more ticks, fleas and lice throughout the year. As well as we are going into Kennel Cough season, if your dog is experiencing any symptoms please keep them home.

It's unfortunate it has come to this but I need to make this public. In the picture below is a picture of an individual lice, note that it is on a finger tip and the size of the lice compared to the finger print, they are TINY!
In the last 26 hours, we have sent 5 dogs home, all with lice, 4 of these were all full size doodles, all 4 visited the same place within the last month, 2 other very recent cases from the dog park. We used to go months without seeing a case of lice, now we arent going a week or even a day without seeing an infestation. This comes as a detrimental financial impact because we are a 100% commission driven industry, if we have to send a dog home because of lice or fleas, that income is never replaced. The last 26 hours have been a $600 loss.
If you are utilizing services such as dog daycare, boarding facilities or the dog park I BEG YOU to please PLEASE use preventative treatment given ONLY by your veterinarian. Simparica Trio is a MONTHLY treatment, meaning it needs to be given monthly. Any area where dogs are in a common area whether it a grooming salon, a veterinary clinic, the dog park or a DOG DAYCARE you will always have a risk of coming into contact with these kinds of things and it's is solely your choice to use preventative treatment.
GOING FORWARD, if you choose not to use preventative treatment and your dog comes into our facility with any visible parasites, you will be charged the entirety of the service you were supposed to receive in addition to a sanitizing fee.
Your dog will not be permitted back into our space for 14 to 28 days depending on the severity of the infestation and we will require proof of purchase of preventative medicine from your veterinarian at your next visit.
We will be asking EVERYONE if they have visited a daycare or boarding facility since their last grooming apt and if you have, we will also be asking for proof of CURRENT preventative treatment which daycares also need to enforcing 100% of the time.
Unfortunately we are not the only ones impacted by this epidemic, our friends at Unleashed along with others in our community are noticing a large increase in dogs with active parasite infestations.

Those of you concerned about your dogs health and wellness we are open, honest and happy to have a conversation during business hours.


**KENNEL COUGH** If your dog is coughing or weezing (showing any symptoms of kennel cough) they will not be permitted in our building for 14 to 21 days AFTER their last known symptoms. We cannot enforce honestly, however, knowingly bringing your dog into a space where other dogs are could be detrimental to any immune suppressed or senior dogs. Kennel cough and other viruses like kennel cough are AIRBORNE and can be passed through literal breath. Please be kind and considerate.

The only thing he likes more than using his nose is a fun game of flirt pole! Following that with place, impulse control and a public outing (people are very exciting). Then well earned social time with Bo.

We walk sun or snow! As winter approaches keeping our dogs exercised is important. If it is too cold for your dog (-30 or below dependant on dog), we will adjust your walk to a drop in with enrichment or training games.

Things you can do to keep your dog enriched on extra cold days 👇🏻

-Scent work, using their nose tires them out! It also challenges them and can help build confidence.

-Enrichment activities using their meals. I like kibble rolled up in a towel and tied or dog puzzles.

-Renting an indoor space to burn off some energy or practice training.

-Slatmills are great for burning energy and building confidence. Red Deer and Area has a mobile company that offers this, they come to you!

For those that do or don’t know my personal dogs, here they are. 👋🏼
While Bo has been passing my personal expectations every day (he’s shaping up to be a wonderful dog) I can admit when I have been slacking. Between a severely fractured finger, surgery and now another upcoming surgery. Lark has regressed. Regression can be normal but I am commited to undoing the years of neglect she’s faced. Therefore she is starting my own 4 week personal program now. She has overcome a lot, (I have her story pinned in my feed) however it is time we really shape up recall, leash skills and our neutrality. So in 4 weeks our goal is to have off leash reliability, better leash manners and neutral behaviour in public. Stay tuned for progress updates. 🐾

How fun! We checked out Sallys Play Centre, I love that they have private rentals. Bo tested out the agility equipment, although he found the weave poles tricky haha! The pups loved it.
