Great strides in functional health testing for French Bulldogs from OFA!

What is the RFGS?
The Royal Kennel Club and the University of Cambridge have devised the Respiratory Function Grading Scheme (RFGS) designed to advise owners if their dog is affected by BOAS (Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome) and give guidance to breeders on how to lower the risk of producing affected puppies. The program has been licensed by the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals, and RFGS screening is now available in North America.

The a select number of veterinarians have been approved as OFA RFGS examiners as of Spring 2024.The list will continue grow in numbers and by geography over time, but the roll out is slow as all approved examiners must shadow under an approved examiner in a clinical setting in order to gain familiarity with the exam protocol and gain experience and proficiency in the grading scheme before becoming approved.

Hello, everyone!

It's been a little quiet on our end here at Remedy Kennels, but I wanted to take a moment to raise awareness about IVDD (Intervertebral Disc Disease) and the health challenges of French Bulldogs.

Unfortunately, our beloved Remi has been experiencing some concerning symptoms and had to be taken into today. He's undergoing further investigation with an MRI for suspected IVDD. Remi, my first French Bulldog, stole my heart from day one and has been my loyal companion ever since. However, as much as I adore him, French Bulldogs, like many breeds, have their health challenges.

If I may offer two pieces of advice: Firstly, regardless of your pet's breed, consider getting pet insurance as soon as you bring them home. Secondly, if you're considering a French Bulldog, do thorough research on reputable breeders. Look for OFA certifications in both the dam and sire, covering cardiac, hip and elbow dysplasia, eyes, patellar luxation, tracheal hypoplasia, and ideally spinal certifications too. By supporting conscientious breeders, you're helping to improve the breed's health and ensuring your new companion is as healthy as possible from the get-go.

Thank you for taking the time to read this and I hope this helps. As for us, although we're in an off-season, we have some promising newcomers in our program who will soon undergo OFA certifications. Stay tuned for updates!
