9 rats arrived last night. We’re referring to this intake as the “Bob Rats.” They’d been kept in cages too small for even 1 rat, with 3 females in one, & 6 males in the other. The cages were disgusting, caked in urine with a horribly strong scent. They had no food or water.
The Bob Rats went straight to our Volunteer Medical Advisor / DVM, Nikolai for exams. All are underweight, poor body condition, & some were dehydrated & lethargic on arrival. Other health issues discovered include parasites, a tail missing the tip, another tail injury, an open wound, toe injury, a strange growth by an eye, & a mass by an armpit.
Thankfully, after some food, water, & settling into clean cages, all rats seem to be in good spirits. None of them flinched or responded with signs of pain during their exams. We think they’ll all be feeling much better soon with a little love and good husbandry. The females are younger & more active. They’re on pregnancy watch, though we’ve thankfully seen no signs.
Our Emergency Fund is depleted by ~$1,000. We expect there to be some vet bills with these new intakes & are unsure if they’ll stay as Sanctuary Rats or be put up for adoption in the future. If you sign up for a Box Subscription, or as a Monthly Donor, you also get entered into our Seasonal Contest this month. ❤️

We had to say goodbye to Mixy. She’d been through too much, but had a wonderful last few weeks with us. We’re so grateful for everyone who helped give her that. She finally found out what life should be like. ❤️
Mixy was a sweet, old girl with spunk and an adventurous personality. But her favourite thing to do was cuddle. Mixy leaves behind her bestfriend Aya, who is now feeling very down. Aya is highly adoptable and we hope she finds a home with another rat soon. ❤️
Mixy, we love you, and you deserve all the love in the world. We’re sorry you didn’t get it sooner. Thank you for loving us back ❤️

Olive is the little one we mentioned who we recently lost. Please take a moment to remember him with us. We’re grateful to have had the chance to show him love and fun before he passed on. His soul will live on through his sweet brothers. Rest easy Olive. You are wonderful. ❤️
