I GOT THIS INFORMATION REGARDING A RECALL TODAY• IF YOU FEED RAW POULTRY TO YOUR PET, PLEASE READ CAREFULLY
To: Veterinarians and Pet Stores in British Columbia
Date: January 6, 2025
Subject: H5N1 HPAI In Domestic Cat in Oregon and Raw Pet Food Recall
We are writing to inform you of the recall of Northwest Naturals brand 2lb Feline Turkey Recipe raw
& frozen pet food, following the confirmation of H5N1 Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) in a
domestic cat on December 24, 2024. This cat, an indoor-only pet from Washington County, Oregon,
died after consuming this raw pet food. PCR testing and whole genome sequencing confirmed the
cat’s infection was linked to frozen raw cat food.
Recalled Product Details:
Product: Northwest Natural 2lb Feline Turkey Recipe
• Best by Dates: 5/21/26 B10 and 06/23/26 B1
• Distribution: Sold in British Columbia and 12 US states
We strongly recommend that veterinary clinics and pet stores display recall information for clients
and educate pet owners about the recall. Raw pet food may expose pets, and indirectly humans, to
harmful pathogens, including HPAI, Salmonella, and E. coli. These pathogens pose risks to both
animal and human health, particularly in homes with immunocompromised individuals.

I recently ordered some microchips that are new to me and I'm so excited to use them! They are mini (smaller than most microchips), iso (internationally recognized) chips and automatically linked to the BC Pet Registry once I put them in. These chips give you 24/7 coverage, are easily traceable and all of the proceeds go directly towards the live saving work done by the BC SPCA. The cost of the lifetime coverage (including any changes over the years) is included with these microchips when you buy them. However, if your pet has a different type of chip already, you can still register their existing chip with the BC Pet Registry for $45 https://bcpetregistry.ca/

Great tips for emergency transport to a hospital! Always have a carrier ready and ideally leave it out or put it out frequently for your pet to explore, find treats and learn to accept it as part of their everyday environment.

We often get asked about how to safely transport a pet to the animal ER, especially when facing different types of emergencies. Here is a quick guide of helpful tips and makeshift hacks to help prepare pet owners in advance. Remember, if your pet is experiencing an emergency, always call us ahead so we can prepare for your pet’s arrival and provide more tips on how to aid or transport your pet, depending on your pet’s specific condition.

Part of the art of working with any animals is learning what they are telling you without a verbal conversation. I love studies where we learn more about assessing our patients and if they are in acute pain. Did you know about the Feline Grimace Scale? Last year the Journal of Feline Medicine and Surgery published a study that shows that it is valid for kittens too!

Dr. Renee Ferguson graduated from Ross University in 1998 and sold her small animal practice in 2022. She started Coastal Mobile Veterinary Services (coastalmobilevetservices.ca) primarily to help nonprofit organizations with medical cases right at the rescue in order to minimize the stress on the patients and avoid the potential anxiety associated with travel. This allows the rescue animals to receive some of their medical care in a familiar environment and it is more efficient use of rescue staff time and resources. Dr. Ferguson and Coastal Mobile Veterinary Services have the additional capacity to accept of small number of private clients so that they can have the same Fear Free Veterinary Care at their home.
