Two stakes were run at Ajax Downs near Toronto on Wednesday.
Jockey Rachael Isaacs earned her first stakes win, as the 29-year-old rider piloted Sugar N Pride (pictured) to a wire-to-wire victory in the 330-yard, $44,857 Ontario Sires' Futurity (R) for 2-year-olds sired by participating stallions.
Prepped by Bob Broadstock for owner George Coleman and racing against a reported 15-mph head wind, Sugar N Pride defeated Snow Magically Sweet by 1 1/4 lengths in :17.397. The chestnut son of the Mr Jess Perry stallion Sugarman Perry earned $17,944 from her first career stakes win.
"He is probably the most talented horse I've ever ridden," said Isaacs of Sugar N Pride. "He broke like a rocket. It's just a matter of keeping him focused."
Sugar N Pride was bred in Ontario by Heste Sport Inc., and he was the fourth-fastest qualifier from two trials run August 3. Raced exclusively at this track, the gelding has won two of four starts and has banked $31,824.
Fastest qualifier Pretty Magicall finished fourth, 1 1/2 lengths behind Sugar N Pride.
Also on Wednesday, Sour Candy gave trainer Lauren Spada, 21, her first stakes win in the $39,646 Norman Picov Derby.
Racing against a reported 15-mph head wind, Sour Candy covered 400 yards in :20.223, and his margin of victory was a short nose from Krash On Okey, who was clocked in :20.225. Alexis Sanchez rode the chestnut Jess Good Candy gelding for owners Craig Spada and Rick Crispi.
Sour Candy was bred in Ontario by Richard Wincikaby, and he was coming off of a win in a 350-yard, $11,212 allowance dash at this track on August 27. The gelding has won six of eight races, and the $15,859 winner's share of the purse from his second lifetime stakes score pushed his bankroll to $55,017, of which $41,719 has been pocketed from six starts this season.
